Mr. Valdez wants to have their living room carpeted. The room is 9 meters long and
6 meters wide. How much carpeting is needed to cover the living room floor?
STEPS ANSWER
1. Understand:
What facts are given? A living room with the following dimensions.
length = 9 m; width = 6 m
What is asked? How much carpeting is needed to cover the
living room floor?
2. Plan:
What strategy do we use? We computed the area of the living room.
We used this formula:
A = length x width
3. Solve
Show the solution using the A=lxw
formula =9mx6m
A = 54 m 2
The living room has an area of 54 m 2 . The
carpeting should be more than 54 m 2 .
4. Look back
Ask yourself the following Did you use the correct formula?
questions: Does the answer make sense?
Did you label the answer
correctly?
What’s More
Direction: Read the problem inside the box. Then answer the
questions that follow.

A residential lot has the shape of a parallelogram. Its base measures 20 meters.
The distance between the 2 parallel sides is 8 meters. What is the area of the lot?
STEPS ANSWER
1. Understand:
What facts are given? A residential lot with the following dimensions.
base = 20 m; height = 8 m
What is asked? The area of the lot.
2. Plan:
What strategy do we We computed for the area of the residential lot.
use? We used this formula:
A = base x height
3. Solve
Show the solution A=bxh
using the formula = 20 m x 8 m
A = 160 m 2
The residential lot has an area of 160 m2 .
4. Look back
Ask yourself the Did you use the correct formula?
following questions: Does the answer make sense?
Did you label the answer correctly?
Cut out a triangle, a parallelogram or a trapezoid from colored paper. Measure the
needed dimensions to compute for the area. Round your measurements to the nearest whole
number. Paste your shape inside the rectangle below and show your solution.
