4351 5 c. lemon, a fine horizontal pair and a single in a paler 'matt' shade all used on large part
1861 cover, top flap missing, from Bogotá to Castellanos & Ca. in Ambalema, all cancelled
by "BOGOTA" pearl handstamps in black. Fresh and very fine cover used during the four
month period under 'Mosquera' rates. Cert. Moorhouse (2012).
Note: On August 28, 1861 Tomas Cipriano de Mosquera altered the existing postal rates
by memorandum. He ordered that the internal Colombian postal rates of April 1846 be re-
introduced, namely 10 centavos for an inter-state letter and 15 centavos from one state to
another. Only four letters are known sent during the four month period between August and
December 1861, a new organisation being implemented on January 1, 1862.

4368 20 c. red, the extraordinary piece bearing a horizontal pair (position 32-33), marginal strip
of six (positions 37-42) and 1863 20 c. red (two, one is halved at end of the piece and the
other with closed tear), all cancelled by manuscript pen strokes. Position 40 in the strip of
six shows the major retouch "redrawn background lines above the value". One or two minor
vertical creases of no importance as this exceptional piece bears the largest known used
multiple of the 20 centavos in the strip of six besides showing a rare mixed issue franking.

4370 1 peso pink, the famous "Laarsen Stone" showing all 54 positions on the sheet of 54 subjects
(9x6) on album page, it is believed by students that only about half of Laarsen's configuration
is correct, however all 54 stamps are different in type as the 1 peso stone was adapted from
the stone of the 2½ centavos value. The reconstruction shows 11 unused stamps including a
pair, a top marginal used pair and six further marginal stamps, most being with manuscript
cancellations although 11 bear handstamps. Condition is obviously variable but a wonderful
and renowned plating study of immaculate provenance. An extraordinary showpiece.

William Knox Martin Experimental Flight 1919 from Barranquilla to Puerto Colombia
The 1917 current 2 centavos carmine-rose was overprinted in 10 definable types horizontally, the sheet being
cut into strips prior to sale, thus vertical multiples and blocks cannot exist. Eugenio Gebauer and Jairo
Londoño de Tamayo believed there to be 200 examples printed, Dr. Hugo
Goeggel & Carlos Valenzuela project a total of 300 examples printed.
There were 160 letters carried on the First Flight on June 18, 1919,
the mail being dropped at Puerto Colombia and the plane returning
to Barranquilla without test landing. Either mint or used, these stamps
represent some of the great rarities of Airmail philately.
