HF Service Gate Valve

This gate valve has all the features of a standard gate valve, but
the materials used in construction allow it to be used in
applications where hydrofluoric acid is used.
Low stress bolting materials B7M and fine grain Carbon steels are
required to provide resistance to chemical attack.
Trim materials are Monel K500 this includes stem, seats, and gate.
Stainless steels are not acceptable, gasket materials required are
monel SPW with PTFE fillers.
Packing materials are to be PTFE. Specialized paints are to be used
on flange outer diameters, bonnet interface joints and gland areas,
these paints change color in contact with hydrofluoric acids and
provide visual indication of leakage.
Personnel engaged in repair and testing of these valves must wear
Safety Glasses, Gauntlets, Respirators and full protective coveralls.
All valves in HF service must be decontaminated using Soda ash
and water to dilute or neutralize HF before valves are stripped.
HF ACID CAN KILL

Butterfly Valves
Butterfly Valve Lined

Typical liners are EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) and

Nitrile. EPDM is widely used in HVAC applications. It resists attack
by water, glycols, chlorinated water, 20 percent sodium
hypochlorite (bleach), phosphate esters, alcohols and acids.

Nitrile is another commonly used liner. It is well suited for use with
most petroleum oils and greases, most automotive-grade gasoline,
fuel oils, glycol, alcohol and other petroleum products.

Other less commonly available liners are fluorocarbon for use in

chemically aggressive environments, and food grade versions of
nitrile and EPDM.

Butterfly Valve Metal Seated Eccentric

On a double eccentric valve, the sealing plane of the disc is offset

from the axis of rotation. This provides an uninterrupted circular
sealing surface on the disc that makes it possible for a circular
sealing element to be placed in the valve.

Second, the axis of rotation of the disc is laterally displaced from

the true center of the disc so that it will "cam" away from the seat
to eliminate jamming or squeezing as the valve is opened and
closed. This design eliminates wear points around the disc at the
top and bottom of the seat. When closing, the disc cams tightly
into its seat to create a bubble-tight seal with consistent torque.
This eccentric rotation has a tremendous impact of extending the
duration of the valve's leak-free performance.

Butterfly Valve Double Flanged

The benefit of the double flanged butterfly valve is that it is bolted

to both ends of the pipeline, this means that in a shutdown
situation, either end of the pipe can be independently disconnected
whist the other end is still holding pressure.
Can come in eccentric disc design.
Can be designed with metal – metal seats, soft seat inserts
retained by seal plate.
Can be used in WOG, elevated temperatures, cryogenic.
Can be installed vertically or horizontally.
Butterfly valves can be affected by pipe stress ensure valves are

Safety Valves
Safety Valve with Easing Gear Open Bonnet
Typical design used for Steam and water, Easing Gear or lever
allows valve to be manually lifted whilst in service to test
operation.
Not suitable for gas mediums as it can escape via open bonnet
arrangement when valve is open.
Stem guidance is critical to operation.
Seat and Disc flatness also critical for operation.
Set pressure obtained by applying additional load to stem via
adjustment screw fitted under cap.
Available in many sizes based on
Set Pressure
Service Medium and Temperature
Total discharge capacity of vessel required.
Discharge outlet always larger than inlet to better discharge
process volumes, discharge capacity of valve is denoted by total
disc orifice size and lift away from seat. Can be manufactured in
backseat design to stop leakage past the valve bonnet at full lift.
Cab be supplied in Buttwelded inlet, outlet and RF, RTJ screwed
ends

Duplex Safety Valve

Similar to the conventional safety valves, however being a duplex

safety valve, it has two relief points, which can be set at differing
pressures.

Two stage release provides staged pressure reduction to boilers or

vessels, the design provides greater pressure relief and protection
with less valves required to meet discharge capacity.
Typical Manufacturers Hopkinson, Dewrance, Shaw, Lesser.
Not commonly used.
Must be installed Vertically can be gagged.
Testing and setting to be completed on individual chambers.

Conventional Relief Valve
No Easing Gear fitted
A pressure relief device actuated by inlet static pressure having a
gradual lift generally proportional to the increase in pressure over
opening pressure.

Relief valves are commonly used in liquid systems, especially for

lower capacities and thermal expansion duty. They can also be
used on pumped systems as pressure overspill devices.
To be installed Vertically only.
Can be screwed, or flanged.
Available in various trim configurations.
WOG, Steam service.
Valves used in Air or Gas generally have soft disc or O ring inserts
to disc.

Pilot Operated Relief Valve

This type of safety valve uses the flowing medium itself, through a
pilot valve, to apply the closing force on the safety valve disc. The
pilot valve is itself a small safety valve. There are two basic types
of pilot operated safety valve, namely, the diaphragm and piston
type.

The diaphragm type is typically only available for low pressure

applications and it produces a proportional type action,
characteristic of relief valves used in liquid systems. They are
therefore of little use in steam systems.

The piston type valve consists of a main valve, which uses a piston
shaped closing device, and an external pilot valve, very accurate
set pressure are attainable with this valve. Install Vertically only

Bellows Fitted Relief Valve

A direct loaded safety valve wherein sliding and (partially or fully)

rotating elements and springs are protected against the effects of
the fluids by a bellows. The bellows may be of such a design that it
compensates for influences of backpressure via the discharge side
of the valve.
Bellows or Enviorseal design valves eliminate toxic fluids or gases
penetrating the bonnet assembly of the valve.
Bellows must be tested for leakage
Constant back pressure to the valve will change set pressure as
disc has greater loads imposed due to back pressure mediums.
Valve set pressure to be obtained with induced backpressure via
outlet or discharge flange.
No leakage permissible on bonnet assembly past bellows.

Screwed Relief Valve

Small screwed-type relief valves are used mostly on compressed air

systems (bottled supplies and compressors). Due to the pulsations
from a compressor discharge, it is advisable to add another 5
percent to the pressure differential between the compressor
unloader valve setting and the relief valve set point.

than ball valves.
Has temperature limitations, can be used on slurries depending on
trim configuration.
Body and Plug taper and finish critical to final isolation.
Can be fitted vertically or horizontally, can be erratic if there is
under pipe stress.
WOG available in all API pressure classes, Flanged RTJ screwed,
Socket weld ends and buttwelded ends

Choke valve (Cage/Plug Type)

Works on the principal of a cage with holes, and a plug that seals
off the holes, allowing the flow to be throttled depending on the
percentage of holes in the cage that are open.
However, when the plug is fully withdrawn, the flow is still
obstructed by the cage that is still present in the flow path.
Commonly used in Wellhead production to regulate flow of Gas or
Oil, can be used in steam and water applications.
Trims are generally hardfaced and available in Tungsten Carbide
for increased wear and service life.
Seating can be flat or angular based on manufacturer.

Orbit Valve

Orbit valves can be classified as “friction free” opening and closing

valves. They are quarter turn valves with a peculiar rising stem
and can be used in some of the most demanding applications such
as molecular sieve dryer applications, hot oil applications,
butadiene isolation and many more. The main point in the
application of these valves is their ability to seal off flow. The
original tilt and turn operation eliminates seal rubbing, the primary
cause of valve failure.
Can be manual, Electric or Pneumatically operated, generally
recommended for on / off applications only.
Can be used in elevated temperatures, WOG and available in
flanged or Butt Welded design. Balls are generally hardfaced, seats
are inserted with thermoplastics or metal – metal design

Actuators
Single Acting Fail Close or Open Actuator

The single acting actuator only applies force in one direction, and
relies on a spring force or similar to reverse the operation. A fail
open or closed actuator has the benefit of remaining in its desired
position in the occurrence of a failure.

Double Acting Actuator

A double acting actuator has the benefit of being able to drive in

both directions, which allows it to power open or closed. This is
useful where there is debris in the line that may have stopped the
valve from closing under spring pressure, which could cause a leak.

Electric Actuator

These actuators are powered by an electric motor rather than

being controlled by pneumatics. These allow high forces to be
applied with minimal use of space, and keep the work area clear of
pneumatic lines.

Bevel Gearbox Actuator

Can be fitted in conjunction with smaller electric actuator to

Chain Wheel Actuator

Chain drop actuators are used in applications where operation of

the valve cannot be achieved due to valve position. The chain
wheel actuator allows a valve located at a height to be operated
from the ground. Chain drops can be made at various lengths
based on height of valve, fitted directly to handwheel on rising
stem gate, globe and rotary ball or butterfly valves.

Lever Actuator

Commonly used on small low pressure valves, where a minimal

torque is required to close the valve against the flow.

Seal Materials
Acrylnitrile-butadiene rubber NBR rubber is extremely resistant against most oily substances
(Nitrile rubber) NBR such a hydraulic oils, lubricating oils, petrol and other aliphatic
hydrocarbons, acids and bases. Good physical properties such as
high durability, abrasion resistance and temperature resistance (-
30 °C up to +100 °C, with less life-time at 120 °C) ensures this
type of rubber has a wide area of usage
Fluorocarbon rubber Outstanding resistance against mineral oils, aliphatic and aromatic
FKM, FPM hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons, concentrated and
rarefied acids and mild alkali substances. Excellent temperature
resistance up to + 200 °C and resistance against low temperatures
to - 20 °C according to type, for dynamic applications the low
temperature is in the range of - 15 °C to - 20 °C max. (depending
on the compound), high mechanical values and excellent resistance
against ageing classify FPM rubber high above usual synthetic
rubbers.
Ehtylene propylene diene rubber EPDM is used in cases, where high resistance against hot water
EPDM and steam is required from the seal. Besides this, EPDM is very
resistant against ageing and ozone. The resistance against freezing
is better compared to the usual types of synthetic rubbers. EPDM
cannot be used in nonpolar media such as mineral oils and greases
as well as vegetable oils, but it has an outstanding resistance
against polar substances such as alcohols, hot water and steam.
The temperature range is from - 50 °C to +150 °C.

Hydrogenated acrylonitrile- Seals produced from HNBR rubber feature an excellent spectrum of
butadiene rubber characteristics: high resistance against additive technical oils, low
HNBR liquid / gas permeability, good flexibility at cold temperatures down
to - 40 °C, good resistance against ozone and high abrasion
resistance. HNBR can be used from - 25 up to +150 °C.

Polyacrylate Rubber The outstanding characteristic of acrylate rubber is its excellent
ACM resistance against high temperatures and hot oil. ACM is resistant
against motor oils with modern additives, gearbox oils, lubricating
greases etc. In addition, it features the high oxidation and ozone
resistance of the saturated polymer chain. Temperature range is
from - 20 °C up to +150 °C, with less life-time at 175 °C. Water
compatibility and cold flexibility of ACM are significantly worse than
NBR.
Chloroprene rubber Chemical and physical characteristics of CR rubber are similar to
CR the ones of NBR rubber. However, the resistance against mineral
oils is somewhat lower, but the resistance against the ageing,
ozone, acids and alkalis are excellent. The application temperature
range is from - 40 °C to +100 °C, with less lifetime at +120 °C.
Butyl rubber Seals produced from this material feature very low permeability of
IIR gases, high resistance against oxide and ozone, good electric
properties and excellent resistance against animal and vegetable
oils/greases. This material is not suitable for applications with
mineral oils. The application temperature range is from - 40 °C to
+140 °C. Good resistance against hot water and steam to +130°C.
Natural rubber Natural rubber is a highly elastic material with excellent physical
NR properties. In spite of wide range of synthetic rubbers with special
characteristics, natural rubber is still extensively used. The
temperature range is from - 45 °C to +100 °C.
Chlorosulphonated CSM features excellent resistance against ozone, acids and alkalis,
polyethylenerubber it is resistant against ageing and has a good mechanical and
CSM physical properties. Mineral oils may cause swelling, which size
depends on the application temperature and type of hydrocarbon
components. The temperature range is from - 30 °C to +130 °C.
Perfluorocarbon rubber This material is required in areas with extremely aggressive
FFKM, FFPM chemical media such as hot amines, nitric acid or superheated
steam. The temperature range (approximately - 15 °C. up to 250
°C) depends only on the used compound and the required
application. Chemical resistance: Aliphatic and aromatic
hydrocarbons, chlorinated hydrocarbons, polar solvents (acetone,
methylethylketone, ethyl acetate, diethyl ether and dioxane. Not
compatible with fluorinates refrigerants e.g. R11, R12, R13...)

Polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE is the polymeric material, which offers a nearly general chemical
PTFE resistance at moderate temperatures. Only at increased temperature some
chemicals can attack PTFE. Compared to elastic materials such as rubbers
and thermoplastic elastomers PTFE shows reduced elasticity and
increased stiffness, which results in strongly increased installation forces
so assembly in open grooves is recommended. PTFE has very good
sliding characteristics and a wide working temperature range from -
200 to +260 °C.
Fluorinated ethylene propylene Similar properties as PTFE. Extremely high chemical and thermal
FEP resistance. Very low coefficient of friction. Excellent material for
seamless encapsulated O-rings, whereby elastic core is covered
with resistant material. Operational temperature ranges of - 60 °C
to +200 °C with silicone core and - 20°C to +200°C with
fluorocarbon core. Can be used with food, pharmaceutical and
medical products.
Tetrafluoroethylene propylene Aflas is a special rubber and belongs to the newer generation of
rubber fluoroelastomers. Seals manufactured from Aflas features
TFE/P extraordinary resistance against a whole range of specific medias
and chemicals, such as hot water, water steam, acids, alkalis,
ammoniac, bleaching agents, sculpture gases and oils and amines,
especially against medias with additives, containing amines and
corrosion inhibitors, additive engine and gearbox oils, brake liquid
and media with oxidants. The application temperatures are similar
to fluoroelastomers – from - 20 °C to + 200 °C.
Fluorsilicone rubber FVMQ rubber features enhanced chemical resistance against oils,
FVMQ fuels and solvents. This resistance applies particularly when in
contact with aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons and alcohols.
Temperature range is Generally between - 60°C and + 200°C
when considering specifying FVMQ.
Silicone rubber The application area of this rubber is based on its excellent heat
VMQ, MVQ resistance (- 55 °C to +200 °C), however it cannot be used in hot
water or steam. Silicone rubber resistance against oils is
approximately at the level of NBR, however physical and
mechanical properties of the material are not as good.
Polyurethane rubber Seals manufactured from polyurethane feature high mechanical
PUR, TPU properties, such as elongation / abrasion resistance, high reflection
elasticity and good properties for the sealing of gases. Resistance
against fuels and against a number of commonly used oils, and
also oils with high content of aromatics, is excellent. Seals from
polyurethane rubber have good heat resistance (up to +125 °C)
and good flexibility under low temperatures (to - 30 °C) also
excellent resistance against oxide and ozone and high lifetime.
