HOT INSULATION OF VESSELS, Rev-A
PIPING AND EQUIPMENT Page 7 of 53

3.1.7 Insulation materials to be used over austenitic stainless steel surfaces shall be
zinc free and shall be inhibited w it h sodium silicate as per ASTM C-795.The
amount of leachable chloride in the insulation material (except for calcium
silicate) before application shall not exceed 10ppm. In case of calcium silicate it
should not exceed 50ppm. For the chemical analysis of insulation materials
ASTM C-871 shall be referred.

3.1.8 Dimensions and dimensional tolerances f or pipe sections, mattresses & slabs
shall generally be as per respective codes unless otherw ise ment ioned. The
number of pieces to be used shall be as less as possible. When installed the
insulation shall fit snugly and shall have a tight joint.

3.1.9 The insulation materials shall be as per ASTM/BS standards/codes for overseas
jobs unless otherw ise specified.

3.2 Insulation Materials

3.2.1 Rockwool

Rock w ool / Glass w ool shall be a preformed insulation and shall be of long fibred
rock or glass material processed from a molten state into fibrous form bonded w ith
a binder and suitable for the intended operational temperature range f rom ambient
to 550 OC.
Unless otherw ise specified, insulation material shall conform to the requirements
of quality standards listed below :

• Preformed pipe ASTM C547 TYPE-II /IS 9842

insulation
• Metal-mesh covered ASTM C592 CLASS-II/ IS 8183 for piping &
bonded mineral fibre equipt. Blankets shall be faced on one side
blanket and blanket w ith 20mm galvanised 22SWG w iremesh
type pipe insulation stitched through w ith 22 SWG galvanized
lacing w ire. For insulation over ‘ Austenitic SS
Piping & Equipment ’ instead of galvanized
w iremesh & lacing w ire SS304/316
w iremesh & lacing w ire shall be applied.
• Bonded Mineral fibre ASTM C612/ IS 8183
slab insulation
• Mineral fibre block & ASTM C612 TYPE IV/ TYPE V
board thermal
insulation

Material shall conform to the requirements of respective codes and

minimum requirements stated below :

• Density(min) Preformed pipe section:140 kg/m3 (* )

Rockw ool LRB blanket:128 kg/m 3 (* )
(* ) Max resin content at the above mentioned
densities shall be 2% .
Bonded mineral fiber slab: 192 kg/m3 & 320
kg/m 3
• Thermal Mean Temperature OC Thermal Cond. (W/mK)
Conductivity(max)*
