ACTIVITY 4

1. Who were the three main characters of the Propaganda Movement? Why do

historians consider them as the leading members of the said movement?

The Propaganda movement is a reform and

national consciousness movement founded by Filipino

expatriates in Europe in 1872. It is composed of the

Filipino elite called ‘ilustrados’. Jose Rizal, Marcelo H.

del Pilar, and Graciano Lopez Jaena were the three main

characters of the said movement.

Historians consider them as the leading members of the said movement because

of their greatest contributions. The most outstanding propagandist was Jose Rizal, he

was known to be the greatest novelist of the movement. His publication of his two novels

– Noli Me Tangere (Touch me not) and El Filibusterismo (The reign of greed) were

considered as his greatest impact on the development of a Filipino national

consciousness. After the end of the propaganda movement, his battle continued in the

Philippines when he founded the La Liga Filipina, where prominent revolutionary leaders

such as Andres Bonifacio (founder of Katipunan) and Apolinario Mabini, joined. Next,

Marcelo H. Del Pilar, a lawyer and journalist who has contributed a lot to the political

efforts made to defend the rights of the Filipinos. He founded Diariong Tagalog, the first

bilingual newspaper in the Spanish-occupied Philippines, where he revealed the evils of

the Spanish government in the Philippines. He also became editor of La Solidaridad and

sought to expand the objectives of the movement under his leadership. Lastly, Graciano

Lopez Jaena was the greatest orator of the propaganda movement. He was also the

first editor-in-chief of La Solidaridad to advocate for religious and government reform in

the Philippines and to act as the voice of the Propaganda Movement.

2. Do you think the 1896 Revolution would take place even without the prelude as

that of the Propaganda Movement?

I think no because the Propaganda movement was the one that started and

awakened the consciousness of the Filipinos. And “Katastaasang Kagalanggalangang

Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan” (KKK) was formed because Bonifacio was part of the

La Liga Filipina, he was inspired by Rizal so when Rizal got arrested, he was convinced

that the only way the Philippines could gain independence was through a revolution so

he founded this organization. And when the Spanish authorities discovered the Katipunan

that was when the 1896 Philippines Revolution began. So for me, there would be no 1896

Revolution without the Propaganda Movement.
