••Sthir Dasha : An Exposition••

Sthir Dasha begins from the sign occupied by "Brahama" greh.. Dasha runs in direct
order from the sign occupied by "Brahama" irrespective of it that the sign occupied by
"Brahama" is odd or even..
Sthir Dasha is another Ayur Dasha found dealt in the 3rd "Paada" through two
aphorisms which is as under :

ृ ीय पादे ,
श�शनंद पावका: क्रमादबदा:
�सथर दशायाँ �ह्मा�दरे शा,
इ�त सत्र
ू दवेयन उप�दष्टं भव�त !
According to words, sasi, nanda and pravaka, used in sutra, stand for 7, 8 and 9.. Thus
cardinal (chara), fixed(sthir), dual(dwisawbhava) signs carry 7,8, and 9years
respectively.. It means as follows :
--Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn get 7years each..
--Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius get 8years each..
--Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces get 9years each..
From the above figures it is clear that Dasha periods are constant in this specific Dasha,
unlike those of "Chara" and "Trikona" Dasha etc..
•• Since this Dasha starts from the sign in which "Brahama" is posited, hence it is
essential to find out the "Brahama" greh.. The Sage has explained that how to find out
"Brahama" vide Sutra-43, which is as under:
प्रभभ
ु ाव वैर�श प्राणी �पतल
ृ ाभ,
प्राण्यनच
ु रो �वषमस्थो �ह्मा !
••Locating "Brahama" : Pitru Labha Prani is middle part of entire Sutra which guides to
locate Brahama.. Method is as under..
(1) Find out the lords of 6th, 8th and 12th houses from ascendant or its 7th house, which
ever is stronger of the two houses..
(2) How to determine whether ascendant is strong or its 7th house.. For this follow the
rules advocated by Jaimini :
(a) The house occupied by a planet is stronger than that which is vacant..
(b) The house which have more planets is stronger than that of house having less
number of planets (as compared the two houses..
(c) If both the houses have identical number of planets, judge the strength of planet by
being in sign of exaltation or its own house etc..
(d) If both the said houses are vacant, judge the strength of lord of the house...
(e) In case both have identical strength in that case the lord which have covered more
degrees as compared to other planet should be treated as stronger..
(f) A planet in its neutral sign is stronger than a planet in its inimical sign..
(g) In case on above method if both the lords have identical degrees in that case fixed the
strength by considering the natural strength of planets, the natural strength of planets is
Saturn, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Moon and Sun in this ascending order.. Meaning
by Saturn is weakest and Sun is strongest...
(3) Ascertain the strength of 6th, 8th and 12th lords from ascendant or its 7th house
(which ever turns out be stronger)..
(4) Find out the placement of 6th,8th or 12th lord (strongest of these three)..
(5) When counted from ascendant if this planet is placed in ascendant or 3rd house or
5th house will be termed as Brahama and starting point of Sthir Dasha.. Or if counting is
required from 7th house (because of its strength) strongest of these three if placed in 7th
or 9th or 11th house will be termed as Brahama..
Note : Some of the modern authors has raised question about the placement of Brahama
in the said houses from ascendant or its 7th house as word mentioned in the Sutra
'visham' and have debated that in case Brahama greh is not placed in the said odd
houses in that case count from the placement of Brahama in any of house.. But I feel we
should stick to rules framed by the sage and should with some other Ayur Dasha which
does not have such restriction.. It is a point of discussion..
:Timing Of Fatality By Sthir Dasha:
For timing of fatality, death inflicting Dasha sign in Sthir Dasha should be
ascertained.. But before applying the Sthir Dasha it is essential to decide term of life
wether it is short, middle or long life indicated by the chart.. To assess the longevity one
can use PAM method in which P stands for Pooranayu, A stands for Alpayu while M
stands for Madhyayu (P=96 or above, A=32 and M=64) here one more thing is worth
mentioning is that after ascertaining the term of longevity one must apply "Kakshya
Vridhi and Kakshya Hrass" to come closer to longevity.. In case the term of life comes to
short (Alp) judge the first four sign from the sign occupied by "Brahama", in case the
span of life is middle (Madhya) judge 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Dasha signs and in case of full
(Poornayu) life is indicated judge 9th,10th,11th and 12th Dasha signs.. Make use of
following principles to make out the probable death inflicting Dasha or bhukti (bhukti
period is as many months as many years are contributed by a sign)...
Kakshya Vridhi and Kakshya Hrass:
The principles of Kakshya Vridhi and Kakshya Hrass are given below for ready
reference .. But applying the rule of Kakshya Vridhi or Kakshya Hrass will be dealt in
detail in next part when the method of calculating life span will be dealt with...
-Principles Of Kakshya Vridhi-
(1) If Jupiter is posited in ascendant or its 7th house..
(2) Occupancy of natural benefics in ascendant or its 7th house or trikona houses to
ascendant..
(3) Natural benefic planet with Atmkarka or in 7th,5th or 9th house to it..
(4) If Atmkarka planet is exalted..
(5) If Jupiter becomes Atmkarka planet..
(if any of above said rule is applicable there will be enhancement in life span means if life
span is 32years it can go up to 64years depending upon other factors)
-Principles Of Kakshya Hrass-
(1) Association of Saturn with lord of ascendant or lord of Hora lagna..
(2) If Saturn is in 8th house from natal lagna or from Hora lagna..
(3) Association of Saturn with the lord of 8th house from natal lagna or lord of 8th house
from Hora lagna..
(4) Ascendant and its 7th house if occupied by malefic planets..
(5) The 5th and 9th house from natal lagna if occupied by malefic planets..
(6) The houses 5th,7th and 9th are occupied by malefic planets..
(7) If Atmkarka happens to be in its sign of debilitation..
(8) If a malefic planets becomes Atmkarka and it is associated with another malefic
planet but should not be in its sign of exaltation..
(if longevity is depicted to full ie 96 and rule of Kakshya Hrass applicable it can come
down to in between 64years to 96 years subject to other conditions)
Note :As per Jaimini rules Hora lagna is totally different from that of "Parashara's Hora
Division"...
--Rules For Timing Of Fatality--
(1) Dasha sign aspected by a malefic planet..
(2) Dasha sign occupied by a malefic planet..
(3) Dasha sign whose 5th and 9th signs are occupied by malefic..
(4) Dasha sign and its lord connected with malefic planets by aspect or association..
(5) Dasha sign aspected by waning Moon..
(6) Dasha sign and its lord aspected by Venus or the waning Moon..
(7) Dasha sign hemmed between Rahu or Ketu on one side and by Mars and/or Saturn on
other side..
(8) Dasha sign aspected by Rahu or Ketu and Saturn and occupied or aspected by
Mars..(here this rule can be applied like this also that Dasha sign may be under the influence
of Rahu or Ketu and Saturn while bhukti sign be influenced by Mars or vice versa)
(9) Dasha sign whose 8th sign be occupied by the Moon..
(10) Brahama in case associated with Saturn, Rahu or Ketu, the strongest of the lords of
6th,8th and 12th houses of Brahama will be death inflicting planet.. It means the sign
occupied that lord will be death inflicting..
(11) If Brahama is associated with more than two planets, the 12th sign from Atamkarka
becomes death inflicting sign..
(12) If Brahama is associated with Rahu or Ketu, the 10th Dasha sign closes the life..
(13) If Brahama becomes 8th lord of Atmakarka, the 8th house sign from Brahama
becomes death inflicting...
Example : To understand the application of Sthir Dasha let us take up Mrs. Indira Gadhi's
birth chart. Indira Gandhi's birth details are :
DOB :19/11/1917, TOB:23/12 PM IST, POB :Allahabad...
Sign Cancer rises in ascendant and it is occupied by Saturn, who is lord of 7th house..
While lord of ascendant, the Moon is placed in 7th house..
--Ascendant and its 7th house are occupied by one planet each..
--Here Saturn is placed in an inimical sign while the Moon is placed in a neural sign (rule
f)thus Brahama will located from 7th house..
--Lord of 6th is Jupiter, lord of 8th is Saturn and lord of 12th is Mercury.. Hence out of
these three lords one will become Brahama..
--Since 7th house has been considered hence out of these three lords is posited in 7th
house or 9th house or 11th house will become Brahama.. In the present case Jupiter (6th
lord) is placed in 11th house will become Brahama and Sthir Dasha will start from 11th
house from sign Taurus and will run in direct order..
--As longevity calculation the age come in Poornayu span ie between 64 years to 96
years.. When Kakshya Vridhi and Kakshya Hrass is applied longevity comes in between
64 years and 70 years.. Indira Gandhi died on 31/10/1984 when she was near to her 68th
year..
--Sthir Dasha will run from Taurus thus, Taurus-8,Gemini-9, Cancer-7, Leo-8, Virgo-9,
Libra-7, Scoepio-8, Sagittarius-9 and Capricorn-7 the total comes to 67 year completed
up to Sagittarius..
--Indira Gandhi died in Capricorn Dasha.. Capricorn Dasha sign is aspected by three
malefic planets viz Sun, Mars and Mercury (rule No.1applies)
--Lord of sign Capricorn, Saturn, is aspected by malefic planets Sun and Mercury (rule
No.5 applies)
--Her death took place in bhukti of Aries and sign Aries is under the aspect of malefic
planets viz Sun, Mercury and Mars...
Example 02 :Male Native, DOB:11/11/1945,TOB:06/00AM IST, POB: Zira (Punjab)

-Ascendant is Libra, with the Sun and Venus posited in ascendant. 7th house vacant
hence ascendant is stronger than 7th house.
-Lord of 6th house is Jupiter, lord of 8th house is Venus and lord of 12th house is
Mercury. Out of these three lords Venus is strongest since it is posited in its Mooltrikona
sign, hence this Venus will be termed as "Brahama".
Longevity : As per longevity it is a case of "Poornayu" which will be between 64 years to
96 years. By applying "Kakshya Vidhi" and "Kakshya Hras" the age drops down to
70years.
-As per rules "Brahama Greh" should occupy either of ascendant, 3rd house or 5th
house and this case "Brahama" is in ascendant, hence the 'Sthir Dasa' will run from
ascendant and in direct order.
-Dasa sequence will be : Libra>7, Scorpio>8,Sagittarius>9,Capricorn>7, Aquarius>8,
Pisces>9, Aries>7, Taurus>8. The total sum will be 63 years. Thus 1945+63=2008. From
year 11/11/2008 the Dasa of Gemini sign will operate, hence :
-Gemini Dasa carries 9years of total period being a dual sign and each sub period will be
of 9th months per sign, thus Sub-periods (in months) Gemini-9,Cancer-9,Leo-9,Virgo-
9,Libra-9,Scorpio-9,Sagttarius-9,Capricorn-9 and total will be 72months or 6years hence
2008+6=2014.
-Next Dasa will that be of sign Aquarius for 9months when added to age
11/11/2014+9months it comes to 11/08/2015 thus native will die on or around (+- one
month) 11/08/2015.
Reasons :
-Gemini is 9th Dasa sign when counted from ascendant.
-Aquarius is 5th Dasa sign when counted from ascendant.
-Gemini sign is occupied by malefic Rahu.
-One side of Dasa sign is occupied by Mars and Saturn.
-8th house from Dasa sign Gemini is occupied by the Moon.
-Sub-period sign Aquarius is aspected by Mars, Saturn, Sun (all malefic planets) though
it also aspected by Venus but malefic influence scores over the benefic influence.
-Hence native will die in his 70th years on or around 11/08/2015.
Important : Jaimini has restricted up to Sub-periods only but as far as research is
concerned we should try to use sub-sub-periods also. If we convert 9months into further
12dividions it will come 22.5days (considering each month of 30days). Now in Major Dasa
of Gemini and in the Sub-period of Aquarius the sub-sub-period will be start with
Aquarius itself, hence :
Aquarius>22.5, Pisces>22.5, Aries>22.5, the total sum of these three sub-sub-periods will
be 2months 19.5days(20 days). When added 11/11/2014+20/02/00 we get we arrive at
01/02/2015 thus death will happen around first week of February 2015 in the sub-sub-
period of Taurus.
Rule : In case "Brahama" becomes 8th lord from Atmakarka, the 8th house sign will be
death inflicting sign. In present case the Sun is Atmakarka and Brahama, Venus is lord of
8th house. Thus all the rules apply.
