Course Learning Outcomes

1. Discuss elements of multicultural literature in literary texts (C2, A2, PLO1).


2. Analyse works of literary texts in relation to elements in multicultural literature (C4,
PLO3, CTPS2).
3. Evaluate elements in multicultural literature through selections of short stories, novels,
and other media produced by diverse writers (C5, PLO3, PLO6, CTPS3, LL1).
4. Present orally elements in multicultural literature using multimedia in groups (C6, P7,
PLO4, PLO5, CS4, TS1).
5. Present justification with evidences based on a discussion (C5, A2, PLO4, PLO6, CS3,
LL2).
This coursework evaluates learning outcomes 1,2, 3, 4 and 5.

Coursework Objectives

Students should be able to:


1. write a 2,300-word critical analysis essay on the effectiveness of five multicultural
elements in the novel and evaluate how these elements are explored to create
awareness about the importance of valuing and embracing diversity as well as
developing cultural competence (CLO1, CLO2, CLO3)
2. design a multimedia presentation containing evidence and justifications of elements of
multicultural elements in advertisements of any initiatives organized at local
communities (CLO1, CLO4, CLO5).
3. present the group’s multimedia presentation about elements of multicultural literature
based on the advertisements of initiatives organized at local communities (CLO4).
4. present orally a memoir containing multicultural elements about their memorable life
experience living in a multicultural society
(CLO 3, CLO5)

Stimulus

Diversity of thought and culture is not only a part of every classroom, but a part of everyday
life. As today’s society is becoming much more culturally and linguistically diverse, it is imperative
for students to develop the ability to respect, tolerate and adapt to a variety of different cultures in
order to value diversity and expand intercultural understanding (Iwai,2015). As the Covid-19
pandemic takes hold across the world, intercultural understanding, social equality and cultural
diversity are more needed today. In such challenging times, multicultural literature plays an
important role. It serves as a powerful educational tool to increase and broaden students’
awareness of cultural diversity both locally and globally to foster cultural humility.

The designed tasks are to broaden student teachers’ awareness of cultural diversity and develop
a more informed understanding of the culturally diverse community today through multicultural
literature. To achieve this goal, you are to complete a set of tasks based on the given Big Idea and
Essential Questions. The Essential Questions are to help you generate ideas and thus provide
intellectual richness for transfer of learning in a meaningful learning environment.

Big Idea: Embracing Cultural Diversity and Social Equality Promotes Cultural Humility

Essential Questions:

1. Why does sense of identity matter to people?


2. What makes a good multicultural literature?
3. What will the world be like if people stop valuing diversity?
4 How does multicultural literature help to promote cultural humility?

TASK 1: WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT: NOVELS (70%) (Individual)

Based on one multicultural novel by Malaysian/ Asian/ America/ British writers of your choice, write a
2,300-word critical response essay.

a) In your response, analyse the effectiveness of 5 multicultural elements on the theme of the
novel (30%)
b) In the second section of your response, evaluate how the 5 multicultural elements in the novel
are explored to create awareness about the importance of valuing and embracing cultural
diversity. (30%)
c) Lastly, discuss how the novel has helped you develop cultural competence. (10%)
- Support your justifications with evidence from the novel.
- Use a minimum of five (5) direct quotes from the text to support the main idea of each body
paragraph in your essay.
- Refer to APA (7th edition) writing conventions.

You will be graded on your ability to understand (C2), analyse (C4), evaluate (C5), evaluate discussions
(CTPS2), generate ideas and seek alternatives (CTPS3) and source information from various sources
(LL1), respond positively (A2),

TASK 2: MULTIMEDIA PRESENATAION (20%) (Group)

Based on your understanding of the elements of multicultural literature, in groups of 3-4,

a) Identify initiatives in your community organized individually or collaboratively by either
government or nongovernmental organization that addresses any THREE multicultural
elements.
b) Research the initiatives by looking at the organization’s website and social media, as
well as other communication platforms
c) Choose TWO advertisements created by the organizer(s) to spread awareness about
cultural humility.
d) Analyse, compare and evaluate the content or messages in the advertisements from
the lens of the three multicultural elements.
e) Share your report or findings. Your 15- minute multimedia presentation should focus
on:

i) introduction/background of the initiative such as aim/goal, target group,


activities etc.
ii) commentaries of content or messages in the advertisements from the lens of
the three multicultural elements.
iii) the effectiveness of the advertisements in promoting cultural humility.
iv) key learnings from the initiative and advertisements

Materials (10%)
• advertisements related to the initiatives in promoting cultural humility.
• articles/newsletters/flyers/brochures/video clips of the organizer’s background and the
initiatives.
• Evidence of group collaboration.
• Upload your materials in a shared folder on Google Drive and submit a copy in CD.

Presentation (10%)
• 15 -minute multimedia presentation. The content of your multimedia presentation must
contain information and responses to all the prompts in (i) to (iv). Use your creativity to
capture the attention of your target audience.

You will be graded on your ability to create (C6), teamwork skill (TS1), use technology in presentation
(CS4), originality (P7)

TASK 3: ORAL PRESENTATION: SHORT STORIES (10%) (Individual)

A memoir is a story with a proper narrative shape, focus, and subject matter, involving
reflection on some particular event or place. Individually, share your digital memoir about
your memorable life experience living in a multicultural society which highlights any ONE of
the multicultural elements in short stories. Your 15-minute digital presentation should include:

i) Section 1:
- a six- word title that captures the content of your memoir
- a recorded memoir which highlights any ONE of the multicultural elements in short
stories.
- visual resources (photos/pictures/images, etc) to give richness of effect as you
present your memoir.

ii) Section 2:
- at least 3 peer feedbacks about your presentation. (Use your creativity to elicit
feedbacks from your peers)
- your responses to the 3 peer feedbacks.

You will be graded on your ability to evaluate (C5), respond positively (A2), work independently (LL2),
ability to present clearly and with confidence (CS3),

Coursework Implementation Guidelines:

1. This coursework requires students to work individually and collaboratively in groups.


2. No duplication of assignments from other coursework is allowed.
3. Plagiarism in any form will not be tolerated. All borrowed ideas must be acknowledged and
properly cited.
4. Cite the source of the text and any references using the latest APA format. Work should be
typed-written with Arial font size 11 and 1.5 line spacing. Margin should be “normal”.
