Experiment Title: Identification of Biomolecules Using Various Food Tests

Objective: To identify the biomolecules present in a solution using various food tests
(Benedict’s, Iodine, Sudan III, Emulsion & Biuret)

Result:

Test for reducing sugars:

Test tube Carbohydrate Observation

A Glucose Clear blue solution turns
into brick red solution with
brick red precipitate.
B Lactose Clear blue solution turns
into brick red solution with
brick red precipitate.
C Sucrose Clear blue solution remains
unchanged.
D Starch Clear blue solution remains
unchanged.

Conclusion: Glucose and lactose are reducing sugars. Sucrose and starch are non-
reducing sugars.

Test for non-reducing sugars:

Carbohydrate Observation
Sucrose (sugarcane) Clear blue solution turns into brick red
solution with brick red precipitate. Sucrose
is being hydrolysed into glucose and
fructose by HCL.

Conclusion: Sucrose is a non-reducing sugar. HCL hydrolysed sucrose into fructose and
glucose that reacts with the Benedict’s solution to give brick red precipitate and solution.

Test for starch:

Observation Yellowish solution turns into blue-black.

Conclusion: Potato is a starch.

Test for lipid using Sudan III:

Observation Before After

Clear coconut oil. Pink droplets appear in the
solution indicate the

present of fat.

Conclusion: Coconut oil

Test for lipid using oil:

Observation Before After

Clear coconut oil.

Test for protein:

Observation Clear blue solution turns into violet

solution.
