USING AND MAINTAINING HAND TOOLS, PERFORMING COMPUTER OPERATIONS | Quarter 1
FIRM UP
The lesson discusses the tools and equipment used in servicing computer hardware components, how each tool
and equipment is essentials, and to where they should be used specifically on each component. It also includes guidelines
on how to clean and organize tools in order to maintain its performance. The lesson also introduces the learner about
the protocols in managing tools and equipment through proper documentation.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Assembling, troubleshooting, and upgrading a personal computer is a serious task that requires skill and
knowledge to be able to perform correctly. Being skilled in using such tools not only ensure the proper care and
handling of the components, but makes the job of a technician or a professional such as a programmer easier as
well.

For every task, there is a specific tool or equipment. In computer hardware technology, the following tools
and equipment are used and can be classified as: Antistatic Tools, Common Hand Tools, Crimping, Pulling and Cutting
Tools, Electrical Tools and Cleaning and Organizing Tools.

Antistatic Tools
The electrostatic discharge (ESD) tools are essentials to help prevent unwanted electricity transfer that may
cause harm to the sensitive components of a computer.
1. Antistatic wrist strap – used to prevent electric
shocks caused by hand contact that may directly
affect hardware components

2. Antistatic mat – slows the rate of ESD and prevents

it from building up in the human body; ideally used
along with an antistatic wrist strap; come in various
materials such as foam, rubber, and vinyl

Common Hand Tools

Hands tools are used to give a more controlled and precise handling and manipulation of the hardware
components that are installed in computers.

1. Screwdriver – used for majority of repairs and

upgrades components of a computer and used to
loosen and tighten screws.
a. Cross-tip or Philips screwdriver – has a cross-
shaped tip used for crosshead screws.
b. Flat-tip screwdriver – used to turn flat-tipped
screws.

2. Precision Screwdrivers – it comes in different
interchangeable heads which can be switched;
useful for tiny screws found in the inner part of the
components of a computer.

3. Torx screwdriver – a specialty screw used to loosen

or tighten components with torx screw that looks like
a six-pointed star which is usually used to secure the
internal parts of digital components from being
tampered.

4. Nut driver – used to tighten and loosen nuts; consist

of a socket wrench which is generally six-sided and
has the same handle like a screwdriver.

5. Tweezer – a tool used to pick up and transfer small

pieces of screws, nuts and bolts.

Crimping, Pulling and Cutting Tools

These tools are used to connect metal and electronic components in a computer by means of cutting,
stripping, deforming, and bending. The following are the tools used in performing these jobs.

1. Needle-nose or long-nose pliers – used to cut, strip,

pull and bend, wires, metal components and other
small parts in a computer’s central processing unit.

2. Wire stripper/cutter – specifically used to cut and

strip wires that are connected to the hardware
components of a computer.
3. Crimping tool – used to connect wires into the metal
components of a computer; it is designed to connect
or attach a connector at the end of a cable to be
able to link or connect to a network of other
computers.

Electrical Tools
These tools are reliant on electricity in order to perform their jobs. The following tools are used with
electricity.
1. Flashlight or headlamp – used to light up and see
dark or hard-to-reach areas

2. Soldering iron – has a pointed tip that is heated by
electricity to join or connect metal by melting and
applying solder.

Cleaning and Organizing Tools

Cleaning and organizing the components of a computer is one good way of maintaining its performance
and condition. However, because its components and peripherals are sensitive, proper care of the tools in cleaning
should be considered to avoid internal and external damage to the circuitry and the surface of hardware
components. Use the following tools for the job.

1. Cotton cloth – used to wipe the components without

leaving scratches or marks on its surface

2. Cotton swabs – used to wipe hard to reach areas

3. Paint brush – its long and soft natural bristles can be

used to dust off the surface of circuit boards and its
hard-to-reach areas.

4. Compressed air – used to remove dust in the internal

parts of the computer that a simple cotton cloth can’t
reach.

5. Rubbing alcohol – used to wipe away sticky

substances on the surface of components; its quick
evaporation lessens the chance of causing electrical
damage to components.

6. Cable tie – used to organize the wires attached to

components that are connected to the circuit boards.

7. Small parts organizer – keeps screws, bolts, cables

and other small parts in place because it is so easy
to lose tiny parts, but finding it when it is needed is
difficult part

Diagnostic Tool
It is still best to frequently check your equipment or unit for any possible malfunction or problem.
1. Digital Multimeter – also called Volt-Ohm-
Milliammeter (VOM), a handy and battery-
operated tool used to measure voltage, current and
resistance; an effective tool to check or diagnose if
the circuits in a component is working or not.

2. Loopback adapter- is a small device used to test

ports (such as serial, parallel USB and network
ports) to identify network and network interface
card (NIC) issues.

3. LAN cable tester – is a detachable two-piece

component that is used to test the functioning of
functioning of different types of cables (RJ-45),
telephones cables (RJ-11), USB cables.

PROPER SELECTION OF HAND TOOLS

Hand tools are extensions of our hands. They are handheld devices that aid in accomplishing a task.
Proper tool selection is needed to ensure that proper tool is selected for proper use and purpose.

Proper Tool Selection

1. Know and understand in detail the usage of the work to be accomplished.
2. Plan for the scope taking into account of the sequence of tasks.
3. Select the best tool for each task
4. Obtain the tool along with its associated tools and consumable parts as recommended by the
manufacturer.
Safe Use of Hand Tools
Misuse of hand tools may lead to injuries within ourselves and/or people working around us. Also,
incorrect use of hand tools may damage the tool itself that causes the tool to fail. Thus, and tools must be safely
used.
Guidelines for Hand Tools Safety
 Use the right tool for the job.
 Use insulated tools when needed.
 Follow general safety and maintenance practices.
 Use well-designed, high quality tools
