Digital Pen for Better Note-Taking

Introduction
The word today is evolving from using the conventional manual methods to the new world
where everything is digitized. Technicians and investors are looking for new evolving
technologies which will turn the traditional analog input system in more versatile, useful and
precise manner. One of such technologies on enhancing the use of old and traditional ways is a
digital pen which is more than a stylus and a normal ink pen. On one side, it is different from a
traditional pen which just leaves ink trail on the paper and on the other side, it is more advanced
than a stylus which is insert-pencil like that provides data to capacitive or resistive screens which
then uses the pressure data to create digital form of user`s writing.
The digital pen is an efficient gadget which can store the information that we wrote on paper
directly into its memory storage without too much fuss and hassle and it also converts the
handwriting into a format that can be edited in computer systems. It is a very advanced tool that
has ink cartridges with onboard sensors like pressure sensitivity, accelerometers, positional
sensors, microphone, indicator light and IR cameras that all works together to store the digital
form of whatever the user writes on a paper and then send it to the computer wirelessly to store
and edit the data. [1]
Advantages of Digital pen are as follows; [2] [4]
 Enable users to easily record their text and drawings.
 Keep things organized and provides a backup of notes and audio.
 Record lectures and also plays it back.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the concept of digital pen, technology involved, it`s working
and about the benefits that the users can have by using this digital pen. It will build a ground
framework of digital pen concept and also tell us about the scope of this product in market.
Discussion
Digital pen technology can serve as an intermediary technology which has both the traditional
and modern methodology aspects covered. [3] Some people prefer taking notes by writing with
pen on paper while some take notes by typing on their computer and mobile phone and both
approaches have their own specific advantages and disadvantages like taking notes with pen and
pencil is more convenient and less costly but there is a chance of loss of that specific page and on
the other side, taking notes by typing is not so convenient and cheap but the benefit it gives is
that you can access your writing anytime and can edit it in a very safe manner.
Smart pen can be used by both types of people because it digitalize everything that you write
with pen on paper at the same time and in addition to that it can also record audio as well. So, it
can be good and effective tool for students and working class as well. The technology used in
this digital pen is using infrared cameras to monitor the content that a user writes. A very special
paper is required for this that you can purchase from anywhere or you can also print that paper
using your home printer which can achieve resolution of Anoto dot pattern of least 600 DPI. This

specific paper uses Anoto technology which features pattern of very small dots that form a kind
of two dimensional barcode and this technology has proved itself very useful. [4]
Hardware
The following table shows the hardware requirements of a digital pen; [4]
Processor ARM 9
Screen 96*18 OLED Display
Camera High speed infrared camera (over 75 images/sec)
Storage 8 GB NAND
Battery Rechargeable lithium (non-removeable)
Grip Soft touch grip
PC Connectivity Micro USB cable & Bluetooth Antenna
Audio-record Embedded microphone
Audio-playback Embedded speaker

Software
The following tables shows the required softwares to provide complete functionality of the
digital pen; [4]
Evernote Organize and edit data.
Paper Relay Record and replay synchronized ink and audio
Notes Ink capture
Quick record Recording application
Launch line Easily launch smartpen applications

Working of the Pen

The following points shows the working of a digital pen; [5][1]
1. When you write something on paper, the ink refill leaves ink trail on the paper.
2. The infrared LED present in the base of pen shines onto the page and it`s not visible to the
human eye.
3. The light detector also present in the base of paper picks up the infrared reflected off
recognition marks printed on the paper.
4. The microchip of the pen store images of the words you are writing by using the patterns of
reflections.
5. Then the built-in Bluetooth antenna transmit the stored data wirelessly.
6. The wireless receiver of your computer picks up Bluetooth signals and stores what you have
written on the paper and a software will convert this data into a normal and editable text that you
can use in other computer programs.

Metrics
Metrics are a proper way to convert the needs of the customers into accurate and measureable
specifications. The metrics list for a digital pen is as follows; [6]
1. Pen should have easy grip to hold.
2. Minimum force required for writing.
3. Variation to line thickness.
4. Functional range of pen angle from vertical degree.
5. Ease of connectivity to share stored files.
6. No variation in the digital form of writing.
7. Durability of the product
8. Services level
Conclusion
The digital pen and paper is a cost-effective technology that can be integrated and it seems very
satisfactory for students and work people while taking notes during a lecture or presentation and
then saving it in their computer system in a more safe and organized manner. This concept
covers both the most important aspects of concern that are efficiency and management of time.
Digital pens are in great demand in developed countries but in Pakistan we don’t have such
gadgets available at our affordable budget so it seems a good opportunity in Pakistan to launch
such innovative product in Pakistan.
