1 INTRODUCTION
Dear Student
Welcome to Electrical Machines (EEM3701) at UNISA.
The objective of this tutorial letter is to introduce you to Electrical Machines and to inform you
about a few administrative arrangements. In the addendum you will find the FOUR assignments
that you are required to complete and send to the University. All FOUR assignments are
compulsory. You will not be permitted to write the examination if you do not submit all
FOUR assignments. Furthermore, you must pass either assignments 2 or 3 with at least
50% in order to be granted admission to the examination. Take note that this is a semester
module.
This tutorial letter serves as a guideline to this course. It provides you with general
administrative information as well as specific information about the subject. Read it carefully and
keep it safe for future reference. We trust that you will enjoy this course.
1.1 Getting started …
Owing to the nature of this module, you can read about the module and find your study material
online. Go to the website at https://my.unisa.ac.za and log in using your student number and
password. You will see [EEM3701-20-Y1] in the row of modules displayed in the orange blocks
at the top of the webpage. Select the More tab if you cannot find the module you require in the
blocks displayed. Then click on the module you want to open.
We wish you much success in your studies!

2 OVERVIEW OF EEM3701
2.1 Purpose
To introduce students to the performance and design of electrical rotating machines, with emphasis
on synchronous machines and induction machines.

2.2 Outcomes
On completion of this module, students shall be able to:
Specific outcome 1: Apply engineering principles to systematically diagnose and solve Electrical
Machines engineering related problems (GA1).

Specific outcome 2: Perform experiments and collect relevant data for analysis (GA4).
The course shall be limited to the study of Alternating Current Rotating Machines. Students shall be
exposed to the basic design and performance procedures applicable to these machines. Students
shall on completion of the course be able understand and specify the requirements of a particular
motor or generator for an identified task.

Please note: Graduate attributes

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) requires that students who complete an Advance
Diploma in Electrical Engineering must be competent in all eleven Graduate Attributes contained in the
qualification’s standard designed by them.

4.2 Prescribed books

Le Roux, B.J. 2007. Electrical Machines, 3rd Edition, Publisher - Lerato.

We use the handbook with a study guide. Be aware that they use different methods and
notations to solve problems. Make sure that you learn how to handle different sources.

4.3 Recommended books

Chapman, S. J. Electric Machinery Fundamentals, Fifth Edition, New York: McGraw-Hill, 2012
Hughes, E. 1976 – date. Electrical Technology. John Wiley & sons

You do not have to buy the recommended book, but it would be useful as part of your library
because the book is especially written for this (or a similar) course. Students are allowed to use any
other book of their choice, as long as it yields the expected outcomes.
4.4 Electronic reserves (e-reserves)
There are no electronic reserves for this module.
4.5 Library services and resources
The Unisa Library offers a range of information services and resources:

• for detailed Library information go to

http://www.unisa.ac.za/sites/corporate/default/Library
• for research support and services (e.g. personal librarians and literature
search services) go to

5 HOW TO STUDY ONLINE
5.1 What does it mean to study fully online?
Studying fully online modules differs completely from studying some of your other modules at
Unisa.

• All your study material and learning activities for online modules are designed to be
delivered online on myUnisa.
• All your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you will do all your
activities and submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may NOT post
your assignments to Unisa using the South African Post Office.
• All communication between you and the University happens online. Lecturers will
communicate to you by email and sms, as well as using the Announcements, the
Discussion Forums and the Questions and Answers tools. You can also use all of these
ways to ask questions and contact your lecturers.
5.2 myUnisa tools
The main tool that we will use is the Lessons tool. This tool will provide the content of and the
assessments for your module. At times you will be directed to join discussions with fellow
students and complete activities and assessments before you can continue with the module.
It is very important that you log in to myUnisa regularly. We recommend that you log in at least
once a week to do the following:

• Check for new announcements. You can also set your myLife email account so that you
receive the announcement emails on your cell phone.
• Do the Discussion Forum activities. When you do the activities for each learning unit, we
want you to share your answers with the other students in your group. You can read the
instructions and even prepare your answers offline, but you will need to go online to post
your messages. We have also provided a Social Cafe where you can socialise with the
other students in the module.
• Do other online activities. For some of the learning unit activities you might need to post
something on the Blog tool, take a quiz or complete a survey under the Self-Assessment
tool. Do not skip these activities because they will help you complete the assignments and
the activities for the module.
We hope that by giving you extra ways to study the material and practise all of the activities, this
help succeeds in the online module. To get the most out of the online module you MUST go
online regularly to complete the activities and assignments on time.

6 STUDY PLAN
Use my Studies @ Unisa brochure for general time management and planning skills.

7 PRACTICAL WORK
The practical work will be conducted in UNISA, Florida Campus. Four experiments shall be
conducted, and results of the experiments shall be communicated in a form of well written
scientific report. These experiments are:
a) Saturation curve and load test of an alternator
b) Saturation and Short circuit test of an alternator

6
EEM3701/101/0/2020

c) Power factor of an alternator

d) Synchronising a three-phase alternator

The dates for practical’s will be communicated via myUnisa in due course.

8 ASSESSMENT
8.1 Assessment plan
You will find your assignments for this subject in this Tutorial Letter. All assignments are
mandatory. All four assignments will be used in the calculation of your year mark. Please send
the completed assignments to UNISA before the closing dates stated in this section.

The year mark is based on all the assignment marks obtained and their contribution towards the
final year mark are as shown in the table below:

ASSIGNMENT CONTRIBUTION
NUMBER TOWARDS YEAR
MARK
01 10%
02 20%
03 20%
04 (Practicals) 50%
TOTAL = 100 %

Staff members in the Department of Electrical & Mining Engineering are committed to

▪ Respond immediately to at least 85% of student telephone calls made to the Department
during working hours.
▪ Deal with missed calls (if details can be traced) within 48 hours.
▪ To respond in an appropriate fashion to students’ and other emails within 48 hours.
▪ Return at least 80% of all assignments received to the relevant students in less than
three weeks.
8.2 Year mark and final examination/other options
The mark for Electrical Machines (EEM3701) is calculated as follows:
• The year mark contributes to 30%.
• The examination mark contributes to 70%
8.3 Assignment numbers
8.3.1 General assignment numbers
