Samayik Sutra
In Prakrit and English
 

1. Namaskar Mantra (Hyme of Obeisance)


Prakrit                                                               English
Namo Arihanthanam                             Obeisance to Arihants, who have freed the Soul
                                                             from four  major Ghati karmas (enemies).
Namo Siddhanam                                 Obeisance to Sidhas, who have liberated the Soul from
                                                             all the karmas and attained perfect emanicipation.
Namo Aayariyanam                              Obeisance to Acharyas, the head of Nirgrathas and aspirants  for salvation.
Namo Uvajjhayanam                             Obeisance to the preceptors, who impart knowledge to Nirgranthas.
Namo Loye Savva Sahoonam               Obeisance to all Nirgrathas, who are on the path of salvation in the Universe.
Eso Panch Namokkaro                         The five-fold obeisance to the aforesaid destroyer of
Savva Pava Panaasano                          the sins and is supreme and amongst all
Mangalanamcha, Savvesam                   benefecients is the first beneficient.

2. Guru Vandana (Veneration to Nirgrathas)
Tikkhuto                                              Three times, I circumambulate from right side,
Aayahinum, Payaahinum                       Venerate, Bow and Welcome thee.
Karemi, Vandaami
Namaamsaami                                      Honour thee, Thou are beneficient, Thou are
Sakkaaremi, Sammaanemi                    auspicious.
Kayanam, Mangalam
Deviyam, Cheiyam                               Thou are divine, Thou are possessor of right
Pujjuvaasaami                                      Knowledge. I serve thee, and Bowing my head,
Matthena Vandami.                              I venerate thee.
3. Alochana Sutra (Text of Introspection of mobile activity)
 Ichhakarenam                                        I desire, If you permit, O Lord, to introspect my
 Sandisah Bhagwam                                movement on the way.
 Iriyaavahiyam, Padikkamaami
 Ichcham, Ichchaami,    .                        Be it so, I desire to introspect.
Padikkamium
Iriyaavahiyaaye, Viiraahanaaye,              For the injury caused in movement while
Gamanaagamane Paanakkamane,          coming and going, having trampled any being,
Beeyakkamane  Hariyakkamane            trodden upon seeds, crushed green vegetables,
Osa, Uthanga, Panaga Dag,                   dew anthill, ants and their places of growth,
Mattee, Makkada, Santhanaa,               five kinds of fungus, live water, live earth,
      spider’s web.
Sakamane, Je me Jeeva Viraahiyaa         If I having crushed living beings of one sense,
Ekindiyaa, Beindiyaa, Teyandiyaa           two senses, three senses, four senses, five
Chaurindiyaa, Panchandiyaa  senses,
 
Abhihaya, Vathiyaa, Lesiyaa                  harmed them while Coming in the way, covered
Sanghattiya, Pariyaviyaa,                        them with dust, rubbed them, heaped them
Kilaamiyaa, Uddaviyaa,                          together, touched them, squeezed them,
Thaanao, thaanam, Sankaamiyaa            harassed them, shifted them from one place
Jeeviyaao, Vavaroviyaa                          to another with ill-will, deprived them of life,
Tass, Michchaami Dukkadam.               May all these evil deeds of mine be annulled.
4. Tass Uttari Path   (Text of Sanctification of Soul)
 Tassa Uttari Karanenam,                      For its (soul’s) sanctification, repentation,
 Payachchitta Karanenam,                      purification and making it passion free, and
 Visohee Karanenam                              annihilation of sinful karmas, Visalli Karanenam
 Paavaanam, Kammaanam,
 Nigghaayanatthaye
 Thami Kaaussaggam, Annaththa          I engage myself in meditation renouncing
 Ussasiyenam, Neesasiyenam,              bodily activities, with the exception of
 Khasiyenam, Chhiyenam,                    inhaling, exhaling, coughing, sneezing,
 Jambhaaiyenam, Uddu-enam              yawning, belching breaking wind, vertigo,
 Vaayanissaggenam, Bhamaliye            billious unconsciousness.
 Pithamuchchaaye
 Shumehim, Anga Sanchalehim            Minute body movement,
Suhumehim khel Sanchalehim              Minute phlegmatic movement,
Suhumehim Ditthi Sanchalehim,           Minute eye movement
Evamaaiyehim Aagaarehim                 with these exceptions, my meditation
Abhaggo, Aviraahiyo                          be unbroken and uninterrupted,
Hujja Men Kaussaggo Jaava              Till I do not complete meditation by
Arihantaanam, Bhagawantaanam        obeisance to Arihantas, (destroyer of sins)
Namokkarenam
Na Paaremi Taav Kaayam,                Till then, I shall keep my body steadfast
Thaanenam, Monenam,                      by observing silence and engaging
                                                          Myself in auspicious contemplation.
Jhaanenam, Appaanam Vosiraami.     I dissociate myself from all worldly activities.
5. Logassa Path(Text of worship of 24 tirthankars)
Logassa Ujjoyagare, Dhamma                 O! The illuminators of universe, Founders
Titthahayare Jine, Arihante Kithaissam     of Dharma tirtha and conquerers of
Chauveesampi Kewali.                            Passions, destroyers offoes, mundane
                                                               Soul, I offer praise to all the 24 Omniscients.
Usabhmajiyamcha Vande,                        I bow to lord Rishabh and Ajit, Sambhav,
Sambhavamabhi nandanam cha,               Abhinandan and Sumati nath, Lord Padam
Sumaim cha, Paumappaham, Supasam,    Prabhu, Suparshwanath, and Chandra
Jinam cha, Chandappaham Vande.           Prabhu, I bow to thee;
Suvihim cha, Pupphadantam Seetala-        Suvidhi nath, also called Pushpadanta,
Siyamcha, Vassupujjam cha,                    Shital nath, Shreyansa nath and Vasupujya swami, I
                                                                bow  to Vimal nath and Ananth nath Jina Dharma nath
Vimalamanantam cha, Jinam Dhammam    and Also, I bow to Kunthu nath,Arah nath and
Santami cha Vandami.                              Shanti nath; Malli nath. I bow to Muni Suvrata and
Kunthu Arahmcha Malli vande, Muni        Nemi Jina Swami. I bow to Arishta Nemi, Paras nath
Suvvayiam Nami jinancha, Vandaami        and Lord Vardhman.
Ritthanehmim Pasam tah      .
Varddhamanam cha.Evam maye               These paramount souls are free from the dirt of karmas,
Abhitthua, Vihuya rayamalaa                    annihilators of karmas senility and death. All the
Paheena jara maranaa Chauveesampi        twentyfour conquerers, founders of centres of
Jinavaraa, Titthayaraa me Pasiyantu.         dharmatirtha consisting of monks, nuns, shravaks

Samahivarmuthamam Dinttu.                     me sound health, Knowledge and equanimity.
Chandesu Nimmalayara Aaichhesu          They are more resplendent than moon, Ahiyam Payasayaraa,
                                                             brighter than sun, profound like ocean. Such
Saagarvara gambhiraa,                             Siddhas may grant me perfect bliss and salvation.
Siddhaa Siddhim Mam Disantu.
 
6. Pratigya Sutra                                     Text of adoption of Equanimity (to commence Samayik)
Karemi bhante Samaiyam Savajjam          O Lord, I undertake to observe Equanimity
Jogam Oachakkhami Javaniyam                (Samayik). I renounce animate acts so long
Pajjuswami Duviham Tivihenam                as I adhere to equanimity by two methods
                                                                and three medias.
 
Na Karemi Na Karvemi; Manasa           Neither shall I commit sinful acts nor cause others
Vayasa Kayasa,                                      to do so by mind speech and body.
Tassa Bhante Paddikkamami,                 Oh! Revered one, I introspect such sinful act,
Nindami, Garihami, Appanam,                 I loathe and dissociate my soul with the witness
Vosirami.                                                 of preceptor from such acts.
7. Namotthunam                             (Text of Eulogy of Perfect Soul)
  Namotthanam, Arihantanam                Obescience to the Arihants who are the first pioneers
 Bhagavantanam, Aaigaranam                of religion are the Titthayaraanam, founders of the
Sayam  Sambuddhaanam                       tiers of worship are self-awakened are the supermost
 Purisuthamaanam                                  amongst human beings are like lions amongst them,
 Purisaseehaanam Puri savara                 are like white lotus in are like perfumed elephants
Pundareeyaanam Purisavara                   mankind, Amongst the persons who are the most
Gandhahatthinam
Loguthamaanam Loga Naahaanam        Excellent in the universe are its protectors are its
Loga Hiyaanam Loga paivaanam           benefactors, are its beacon lights, are its illuminators,
Loga Pajjoyagaraanam Abhaya             are its bestowers of fearlessness, are the givers of
Dayaanam Chakkhudayanam                knowledge, are the guides of the path to salvation,
Maggadayaanam Sarandayaanam         are the shelter givers,
Jeevadayaanam Bohidayaanam            are the infusers of asceticism of knowledge, are the
Dhammadayaanam Dhamma                bestowers of right faith and conduct, are the
Desayaanam Dhamma naayagaanam    benefactors of religion, are its preceptors, are
Dhamma Saaraheenam Dhamma          its leaders, are its charioters, are the annihilators of
varachaauranta Chakkavateenam         the causes of four existances of celestial human,
                                                           animal and hellish are holder of dharma chakra
                                                           and hence its sovereigns
Deevotthaanam Sarana                        are like an island of protection in the ocean of the world
gaeepaitthanam Appadihaya                 are like an anchor  to the sheltered, a refuge  to the
varnaanadansana dharanam                  drowned, are possessors of  unimpeded and hence
Vyatta chhaumanam Jinaan                   complete knowledge and perception, are the annihilators
Javayanam Tinnanam Tarayanam          of four Karmas interfering the nature of soul, are the
Buddhanam Bohiyanam Muttanam        conquerers of attachment and aversion, are  instrumental
Moyaganam,                                        to others in conquering them, are the self-swimmers of
                                                            this ocean (world), are instrumental to others in
                                                            swimming, are self-awakened and cause self-awakening
                                                            to others, are self-liberated from the shackles of karma
                                                            and relieving others from these bondages;
Sovvannonam Savvadariseenam           who are replete with complete knowledge, are most
Seeram Mayala Maruya Mananta         auspicious, sound, infinite, imperishablei mmobile,
Makkhayam Mavvawaham                   tormant-free, away from re-births, who have
Mapunaravitti Siddhigaim                      attained the above-called Salvation;
Namedheyam Thanam Sampattanam
Namo Jinanam Jiya Bhiyanam               I bow to the conquerers, to the vanquishers of
Thanam Sampaviu Kamanam.               consternation,  to the Aspirant of the above salvation.

8. Text of completion of Samayik


 Ayyass Navmass Samai Vayass,            Out of the nine vows of equanimity, five aberations
 Panch Aiyara, Jani Yavva                       are to be apprised of, but not to be practiced,
 Na Samayariyava, Tanjaha                      namely my mind  (by evil thought), by speech
Man duppanihane Vaya duppanihane       (harsh or sinful words, has been wrongly
 Kaya duppanihane, Samaiyassa              engaged. f  I have not kept in mind the time of
Sai Akarnaiyee, Samaiyassa                    performing Samayik, or half accomplished it,
Anavattliyassa  Karanayee Tassa            contrary to the rules, I beg apology for these sins.
Michhami Dukkadam.
Samaiyam Sammam Kaenam                 If  I have not accomplished the Samayik properly,
Na Fasiyam Na Palyam Na Kitiyam       by body not observed, not finished, not laudated
Na Sohiyam Na Arahiyam                      Not cleansed from transgression Not adoved,
Anee Anupaliyam ,                                 Not abided by the Ordinations of the Veetarag
                                                              (non-attached), then,
Tass Michhami Dukkadam.                     I beg apology and all these defects be annulled.
Procedure of adopting equanimity (conducting Samayik)
1. Clean the place to sit, sit facing east or north, pronounce Namaskar mantra thrice.
2. Recite Guru Vandana thrice.
3. Recite Alochana Sutra and then Tassa Uttari Sutra.
4. Go into meditation, (Karyotsarg), reciting silently Namaskar Mantra nine times or Logass path thrice.
5. Come out of meditation, utter words: If in meditation, I have harboured evil thoughts, and not meditated religious or spiritual ones, let it be
annulled”.
6. Recite loudly Logassa Path.
7. Recite Pratgya sutra to commence samayik.
8. Recite Namotthunam, twice raising the left knee. In case of second time, say “thanam SampaviuKamanam” in place of Thanam Sampattanam”.
9. Recite prayers, Bhaktamar or other strotra, read Anumpurvi, meditate, or read other holy literature or scriptures for a period of 48 minutes,
keeping the mind completely away from worldly chores or thoughts.
10. At the end of 48 minutes, recite all the sutra from no. 1 to no. 5, then recite Namotthanam twice as in the beginning.
11. Recite text of completion of samayik and utter Namaskar mantra thrice to complete the process.
