MODULE 2: PRESENT

CONTINUOUS
Use:

The Present Continuous is used to express:

1. An activity happening now


We are moving aside demolition debris.

2. An activity happening around now, but perhaps not at the


moment of speaking
Our company is using Case 921E front loaders

3. A planed future arrangement


The supervisor is coming to the factory tomorrow evening

Remember:

Spelling of verb + -ing


1. Most verbs just add -ing
melt melting
dry drying
crash crashing
2. If the infinitive ends in -e, drop the -e
move moving
engage engaging
3. When a one-syllable verb has one vowel and ends in a
consonant, double the consonant

PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT CONTINUOUS

1. Look at the wrong sentences, and compare them with the


correct sentences

PRESENT SIMPLE AND PRESENT CONTINUOUS

2. There are some verbs that are usually used in present simple
only. They express state, not activity.

X I’m liking the new infrastructure


√ I like the new infrastructure

Other verbs like this are think, agree, understand and love.

QUESTION WORDS SPECIFICATIONS
1. Questions can begin with question words:
What / where/ which / how / who / when / why / whose
Where is the workshop?
Who is in charge of maintenance?
How do you operate this machine?
Why is the boss worried?
2. What, which and whose can be followed by a noun
What voltage is the generator?
What kind of equipment do you use?
Which screw driver is yours?
Whose office is this?
