Nuvera Training

From: Michael Martin <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, January 5, 2020 8:19 AM

3 things to focus on in the training:

1. Checking the top copy of every finished lift for quality, image quality, etc.
2. Making sure everyone understands file management, insuring that we are running the right
version of every job
3. Operating consistency, making sure, to be largest extent possible, all of the operators perform
functions the same way

Responsibilities of a Digital Print Operator (Nuvera)

These methods help us to get jobs out, done with excellence, consistently. They help us
to “fight, as one” by making the next operator's job easier.

It takes years to learn to do all this consistently. Be patient with yourself and others. If
you're not there yet, keep trying, learning & improving.

As a Digital Press Operator running Nuveras, I am responsible to:

1. **Follow stated priorities OR sort by priorities:

a. Available stocks & APPROVED files
b.
c. (more than just cutting)
d. or Customer pickup
2. ** Read and follow each ticket
3. ** Print the correct version of each approved file!! Files already on the Nuvera
printer are probably the correct version, but not necessarily. Check the
and queues. Later versions will be named “v2” or “ver2” (etc). For

Capital Printing Co - Nuvera Training – 1/27/2020 1

example, "53560 CFTB Part 3 Text v2 APPROVED.pdf" would be a file that is
ready to print (unless ). We know that
the customer has okayed the file to run, since
If APPROVED is not in the name, do not run it! If the Nuvera has multiple
copies of a file, they’re probably the same, but just in case, check the
4. *** We must always print the latest version of every file, and make sure it’s
APPROVED. Here’s how to find and get the latest version to the Nuvera 314.
a. Go to the Digital Printing PC
b. Right-click the folder icon on the bottom and pick Live Jobs v2. (Or open
the LiveJobs v2 link on the Windows desktop.)
c. Open the job folder: "53560 CTFB" is for a Central Texas Food Bank job
due 1/27/20 3pm.
d. Open the DIGIMASTER subfolder. Check that the correct files are there.
If it is a tabs job, you’d want to open the text file to see .
Are any pages blanks?
e. Open Google Chrome on that PC
f. Click on "Nuvera Job Submit." (The Nuvera 314 printer must be On, or
the window below won't open.)

g. Click the "Choose File" button, then find and open “Live Jobs 2.” Open
the correct jobs folder (e.g., "53560 CTFB"). Next the DIGIMASTER
subfolder. Finally, choose the desired file and choose "Open" at the
bottom.
h. Finally, click the Print button.
i. Repeat steps G and H for any other B&W files.
j. *** Delete older versions from the Nuvera! (This should be step 4e.)

5. ** Get the correct stocks
6. Calculate if there's enough stock
a. Not enough? Ask if a partial run is OK.
7. Prepare where to stack / transport the job. Consider other operators as you pick
from:
a. Skid (small pallet)
b. Tree
c. Cart / shelf
8. ** For jobs with Tabs, Covers or Section Dividers, to program correctly:
a. Covers: check on LiveJobs2; verify on the APPROVED file (PDF) if there
are any blanks before/after
b. Tabs or Dividers: check for blanks; also get page numbers of tabs or
dividers
9. Load stock carefully:
a. Usually, curl-side down.
b. Try to conserve stock.
c. Put aside chipboard and cardboard – to go to the “Gaylord” by the back
door
d. Recycle bins are for unusable paper & ream wrappers. But not:
i. Plastic
ii. Chipboard or Cardboard
iii.Paper with plastic, metallic or odd chemical content. Bad sheets of
these go in the trash:
1. NCR paper
2. Synthetic paper like Yupo
3. Labels
e. Use the guides. The Nuveras prefer them .
10.What happens when you don't load stock carefully (or if Management were to
run the wrong jobs on Nuveras)
a. Print Quality issues are more common
b. The Nuvera jams more often
i. Slower
ii. Harder on the back & brain?
iii.Harder to multitask
c. Long-term issues

Capital Printing Co - Nuvera Training – 1/27/2020 3

11.Program on the Nuvera printer:
a. Trays for that stock
i. Size / Color
1. Very dark stocks can cause jams in the fuser, since the
reflective background for a key sensor is black
2. (Even on white stocks, fuser jams can result if that black
plastic tab gets too dusty.)
3. Printer does not adjust based on color of stock, AFAIK. It
just keeps stocks separate, so the Nuvera knows to print on
the main stock, and not the colored slipsheets.
ii. Type / Weight
1. ***Type
a. The main types we'll use:
i. Plain
ii. Pre-cut tab
iii.Pre-printed
iv.Labels
v. Ordered stock (e.g., NCR 2-part or 3-part
paper)
vi.Custom (to give it a name)
b. Also available:
i. Transparency
ii. Envelope
iii.Full-cut tab
iv.Recycled
2. Drilled (3HP)
3. ***Sequence (# of tabs per set)
4. ***Weight
a. Affects:
i. How the paper is fed: higher # will use
fans
ii. Heat of the fuser, and therefore of
job
b. Precise GSM isn't crucial (75 vs 80)
c. Try to keep entire job the same GSM

4 Capital Printing Co - Nuvera Training - 1/27/2020

iii.Coating
1. Sides: C1S would be coated one side only (loaded coated
side ); C2S would be coated on both sides
2. Coating Type
a. None = plain, uncoated; would include smooth,
textured and linen stocks
b. Gloss
c. High Gloss
d. Semi-gloss
e. Satin (midway between semi-gloss and matte; has
more sheen than matte)
f. Matte (very flat)
3. A mixed job (with different coatings) will slow down the
Nuvera
b. Printer Switches
i. Banner pages, if needed
ii. **Edge erase
c. **Media Optimization
i. Normal
ii. Tab Optimization
iii.Wide Format Optimization (not normally needed, even for wide
format jobs)
d. *Decurler
i. Curls up or down based on orientation in stacker, so if you flip
output face up or down, then new settings may be needed
e. **Stacker
i. **Stacker Limits
1. Max number of sheets depends on size. 12x18? 8.5x11?
2. If possible, leave boxes unchecked. Nuvera will run faster.
a. However, stacker may repeatedly jam, or damage
output.
ii. **Stacker Settings - When should the stacker stop?
1. Every 20 Sets? After 1 set? Then every 20?
2. When it finishes each job?
3. When it reaches the Max Sheets Limit?

Capital Printing Co - Nuvera Training – 1/27/2020 5

f. Job itself (consider Qty, Xup, finishing steps):

iii.**Stock
1. Loaded stocks
2. Stock list
a. Press - (hyphen) to see stocks we've already created
i. 60UT = 60# uncoated text (book)
ii. 80GC = 80# gloss cover
iii.100DC = 100# dull (matte, velvet) cover
b. If you create a stock, please:
i. Use this naming format: "-50UT Domtar 2750
8.5x11", "-100GC Polar 12x18", etc.
ii. Note that 20# paper is also called 50#. 24# =
60#. 28# = 70#. and so on. We're using the
higher number, to be consistent and have 1
entry per stock. We could add "20lb" in the
name, though... "-50UT 20lb 3HP Domtar 2751
8.5x11".
iii.Give an accurate GSM if you can find it easily.
iv.Don't create stocks for tabs or slipsheets, at
least for now. Their GSM needs to match the
GSM of the text.
iv.**Output
1. **Sides: 1 or 2 (1s = K/0 or 1/0. 2s = K/K or 1/1)
a. Accidentally run 1s job as 2s: Twice the impressions
("clicks") CapPrinting pays Xerox!
b. Accidentally run 2s job as 1s: We have to re-run the
job. Wastes time, stock, clicks, toner, staples, wear &
tear on Nuvera.
2. *Uncollated? (rare)
3. **Staples?
4. Offset? (rare, in this shop)

a. Jobs have to be tossed and re-done!
b. Asking customers if they’ll accept bad output (for a discount)
c. Too few / too many overs

b. ***Covers printed correctly:
i. 2s cover printing on both sides?
ii. 1s cover blank on inner side?
c. **Any unwanted blank pages before/after tabs, covers?
d. ***Image Quality? We must all improve in our understanding of what
each customer requires. Consider the cost of the paper as a guide.
