Over time many of these chemical companies moved into the production of
pharmaceuticals and other synthetic chemicals and they gradually evolved into
global players. The introduction and success of penicillin in the early forties and the
relative success of other innovative drugs, institutionalized research and
development (R&D) efforts in the industry 4. The industry expanded rapidly in the
sixties, benefiting from new discoveries and a lax regulatory environment. During
this period healthcare spending boomed as global economies prospered.
The industry witnessed major developments in the seventies with the introduction of
tighter regulatory controls, especially with the introduction of regulations governing
the manufacture of ‘generics’5. The new regulations revoked permanent patents and
established fixed periods on patent protection for branded products, a result of which
the market for ‘branded generics’6 emerged.

partner in these regions.
With a vast knowledge of the region, Remington can streamline the difficulties

Research and Development
Remington Pharmaceuticals has developed one of the most progressed and sensitive
R&D facility in the country. The core strength of our team is our foresightedness
that enables us to come up with the desired product at the apposite time. The in-
depth knowledge of the industry, science and the technology help us develop new
and effective products for the most pernicious diseases.
We have on our R&D team scientists with vast knowledgebase. To keep up with the
pace of today’s fast growing pharmaceutical industry, the R&D team regularly
participates in technical programs and seminars so that they are better able to tackle
new challenges and help develop better products. To facilitate the R&D team,
Remington’s laboratory is designed and equipped to meet international standards.
The R&D team is working on developing multi-therapeutic products pipeline.
Valuing the community we live in and the environment has always been an integral
part of Remington’s policy. Remington considers itself a part of the community and
has always strived to make a difference for the betterment of the wider populace
through not only providing quality medicines at affordable prices but also, by giving
something back to the community. We have always made sure that our business
operations are carried out in a manner that protection of the environment remains
one of our top most priorities. Remington is moving towards becoming a carbon-
neutral company by offsetting its carbon emissions through the deployment of
renewable energies for power generation.
Community Support
Remington donates regularly to the NGOs and other foundations to help those who
are in dire need so that they can become responsible citizens and equally contribute
for the advancement of the country. The company continuously supports non-profit/
charitable organizations like Red Cross and ABWT.
The Indian Ocean Tsunami struck in the year 2004 killing millions of people in
areas including India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Thailand. Remington stepped up for
the support of all those affected by what was one of the deadliest natural disasters in
history. The company worked with international organizations like the Red Cross to
provide both financial aid and medical provisions to the aforementioned tsunami-
struck areas.
The year 2005, in a time of crisis when the whole country especially the Northern
areas were jolted by strong quakes, being a responsible part of the community,
Remington was among the first few to extend their full financial and emotional
support to the quake-affected people. The company made unrelenting efforts at
35
making medical provisions available to those affected and helped in the
reconstruction of quake-torn houses.
We believe that education plays a vital role in better equipping the youth to make
positive contributions to the society as a whole and bringing about development.
One of Remington’s keys strengths have been its vast knowledge base and we are
committed on empowering our younger generation with that knowledge and more
and for that purpose, in the 90s the company helped establish Pakistan’s very first

education and in departing invaluable knowledge to the budding youth of the
country. Our senior management team also regularly gives seminars and conducts
workshops at local public institutions.
We also promote healthy living and encourage people of all ages to engage in sports.
Recently Remington held a Polo Tournament for this very purpose. Special training
camps were held for younger people so that they make healthy activities a part of
their routines from an early age. The team at Remington also actively participated in
the tournament which served as an effective means for team-building. Remington

Analysis of Key Industry Participants and Strategy
This section provides a descriptive overview on the top three pharmaceutical firms
worldwide.
Pfizer\Pharmacia:
After its merger with Warner-Lambert in July 2000, Pfizer became the world’s
largest pharmaceutical company. The strong commercial potential of Pfizer’s
product portfolio and its strong products pipeline, has caused Pfizer to invest heavily
in product support, global sales force expansion and increased R&D spend. In April
2003 the merger of Pfizer Inc. and Pharmacia Corporation was announced. The
estimated $60 billion merger consolidates Pfizer’s position as the world's largest
pharmaceutical company. The merged entity will control 11% of the global
pharmaceutical market, from 8%, with annual revenue estimated to increase from
$32 billion to $46 billion. The new Pfizer will also control 50% more of the market
than its closest rival, the world's second largest drug company, GlaxoSmithKline10.
The European Commission approved the merger but demanded that the firm divest
pharmaceuticals in nine different areas in response anti-competitive charges.
GlaxoSmithKline:
However, GSK is still arguably a more global company (in terms of spread) than
Pfizer, given that GSK generates a far higher proportion of its sales outside the
North American market. GSK is ahead of Pfizer in every other region outside North
37
America. GSK generated a relatively high $6.0bn, or 26.6% of its sales, in the
