Case Study 1 ( GROUP 1)

You are in your second year as a principal of a high school that enrolls approximately 1, 750
students. Last year you worked with stakeholders to develop a new vision for your school. One
important goal associated with the new vision is to enhance career and technical options for
students. Your school is considered “high-performing”. Most students score well on state test, and
graduation rates are high, as are rates of admission to two-and four-year colleges for graduating
seniors. However, the school has traditionally been less focused on students who do not wish to
attend college after high school. As a result, pressure has been increasing in recent years to
improve options for these students. You decide to form a team to develop a plan for enhancing
career and technical educational options for students.

Question: How are you going to make a plan regarding enhancing career and technical
educational options for students? Who will be the members of the planning committee? What are
the things you need to consider in planning for this particular case?
We are referring this case to developing a successful career guidance program built upon a well-
developed plan. The Career Guidance Program aims to guide the secondary level students in choosing
career tracks that they intend to pursue through informed career choices towards becoming productive and
contributing individuals as stated in RA 10533 otherwise known as the Basic Education Act of 2013. In
DepEd particularly in senior high school, we have this Career Guidance Advocacy Program (CGAP) as one
of the flagship programs being implemented by the Department as employment facilitation intermediation
services for the youth to provide them relevant information that could guide them in making informed career
choices. The CGAP aims to immerse the parents and students on the realities of the labor market,
and convince Career Guidance Counselors and Career Advocates to use career guidance as an effective
tool in addressing job-skill mismatch.
And when we say comprehensive career guidance, it means that all members of the school will be
part of the committee and planning including teachers, students, administrators as well as parents,
community resource people, and representatives from business and industry. It can be much more
effective with the combined efforts of the school and the community.
There are certain guidelines in planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in Career
Guidance Program applicable in all schools. Planning as the first step, we should have the planning group
that includes people with subject matter expertise, experience in preconference planning, and contact with and
knowledge of experts in the field. Members should be selected based on their ability to meet deadlines,
knowledge of subject matter, knowledge of target audience, and organizational skills. As we plan for career
growth of our students, we should therefore create a Career Development Plan that is a personalized
strategy to assist students in achieving their career goals. A career development plan consists of short-term
and long-term goals related to a students' future job, incorporating their strengths and future career
aspirations.
