"The Garden of Love" is a poem by English poet William

Blake. In this poem, the poet argues that it should be love,
freedom, and joy that religion should be about and not
rules and restrictions.

While the poet is at a place which is called the Garden of

Love, he sees what he has never seen before. He sees that
in the middle of the garden, a new chapel has been built.
The poet says it is built exactly where he used to play on
the grass.

In the next stanza, the poet inspects the chapel and finds
that the gates are locked. He also finds the door with a

prohibiting message which says “you shall not.” The poet


turns back to the garden, which he says was once full of

flowers.

In the last stanza, the poet says that earlier where the
flowers used to grow, only graves can be seen. The graves
have filled the garden. The poet says that he sees the

chapel’s priests walking around the garden wearing black

garments. Talking about the priests, the poet says that they
are holding back their happiness and wishes by using
thorny twigs/branches.
