The following facts and circumstances are stated from personal knowledge, observation and investigation, as well as information received from other officers acting in their official capacity, 2. That, on 8/8/2021, at approximately 1837 hours, the Enfield Police Department received a request for a welfare check at the caller reported the upstairs neighbor was calling for help. Officers made their way to the second floor porch and observed a window smashed open and glass over the porch and stairs. Officer Whitcomb observed Victim 1 lying face down in a pool of blood. Officer Whitcomb could see Victim 1 chest rising and falling. Officer Whitcomb began to kick in the front door when he saw a female, later identified as the Accused, come out of a door into the kitchen area of the residence. Officer Whitcomb then pointed his firearm at the Accused and told her not to move. Officer Whitcomb stated that he could hear a shower running from the bathroom the Accused had come out of and she was soaking wet with water and a blood like substance; she was fully clothed. He then ordered the Accused to her knees and told her to place her hands behind her head; she complied. Officer Roche then forced entry into the residence. 3. That, once entry was made, Officer Austin placed the Accused in handcuffs to detain her while a protective sweep was conducted, As they searched the apartment, they located Victim 2, face down, on his knees, near the bottom comer of the bed. Victim 2 had a large laceration from one side of his neck to the other and across the area of the artery. Officer Whitcomb determined he was unable to render aid to Victim 2, so he went to the kitchen to render aid to Victim 1. Enfield EMS then transported Victim 1 to Baystate Hospital, Officer Unterstein accompanied Enfield EMS and Victim 1 5. That, Victim 2 was pronounced deceased on scene by EMS personnel Flury at 1856 hours, 6. That, Victim 1 was pronounced deceased at Baystate Hospital at 1934 hours. Officer Unterstein assisted Officer Schmidt in photographing Victim 1's injuries. Officer Unterstein observed a large laceration across the front of Victim 1's throat, The laceration extended from ear to ear, across the base of Victim 1's throat. There was another large laceration under Victim 1's chin, a small laceration on the head above the temple, two small lacerations on the chest near the left collarbone, a large gash on the outside of the left upper arm, and a small laceration on the right side under the right arm, just below the armpit 7. That, on 8/9/2021, Detective Jensen attended the autopsy of Victim 1 in Westfield, Ma. He reported that the examiner discovered 22 sharp force injuries throughout various areas of Victim 1's body; some were slashes, and a coupie are consistent with defensive wounds on the left hand. He also reported that the right jugular artery had been severed. 8. That, on 8/9/2021, Detective Bailey spoke with the OCME Investigator on scene regarding Victim 2's injuries. Initial reports were that Victim 2 suffered 15 stab wounds and his throat was slit. 9. That, on 8/9/2021, Detective Callaghan attended the autopsy of Victim 2 at the OCME in Farmington, CT. Victim 2's @gpDriver's License was in his wallet in his back pocket, confirming his identity. There were also other various cards in the wallet. Dr. Borck performed the autopsy and provided him with the initial report of approximately 30 stab wounds with depth and approximately 12 more superficial wounds spread out over the body. Detective Callahan observed approximately 12 stab wounds with depth on the arms and hands, along with several superficial wounds. One was a deep gaping wound between the left thumb and index finger. There was one more gaping wound in between the right index finger and middle finger. There were also other stab wounds to the hands and forearms consistent with what appear to be defensive wounds. On Victim 2's head and face (front side) there was approximately 5 stab wounds with depth and approximately additional superficial wounds. His neck had a gaping wound that was approximately 5 inches in length, going from the front area to the back-left area of the neck; that cut was approximately 1.6 inches to 2 inches in depth. On the back side of his head/neck, there was approximately 14 wounds with depth; most were in the upper left portion of his back, some were in the back of his neck, and some were in and around his shouldergy (tisispage 20 6pap ao) . That, Officer Whitcomb stated that both Accused’s hands were covered in blood and both had wounds. The Accused was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans, but the blue jeans had tears on the rear and all over the legs. The Accused had blood all over her clothes and was showing no signs of emotion 11. That, the Accused had an active order of protection naming Victim 2 the protected party. The order stated to surrender all firearms, do not assault, threaten, abuse, harass, follow, interfere with, or stalk the protected person (CTO1), stay away from the home of the protected person and wherever the protected person shall reside (CT03), and do not contact the protected person in any manner (CT05). The order of protection was signed on 7/8/2021 by Judge Massicotte (Case # H14H-CR21-0745022- 8). 42, That, on 7/7/2021, Enfield Officers responded to a residence ing CT for a qyamaaammin progress between the Accused and Victim 2. The Accused was arrested for being in violation of C.G. S, 53a-181, Breach of Peace 2nd and C.G.S.53a-61a, Assault 3rd on an Elderly Person. See CFS# 2100020866 for further details regarding this incident. 13. That, the undersigned interviewed Karim Ajanako on scene; the following is a synopsis of his verbal and written statements, Ajanako stated that he is currently employed as an Uber driver. On 8/8/2021, a little after 400PM, he started accepting fares for Uber. Around 608PM, he accepted a fare through the Uber trip planner for a female who went by "Harlee". At approximately 630PM, he picked the female up at Brookside Plaza in Enfield, CT. The female was in front of Staples and it looked like she was wearing a red shirt that may have been a Staples uniform shirt. When she got into the vehicle, she told him that she had several stops that she wanted to make. Ajanako informed her that she had only entered a one-way destination and that she would have to update any other stops in the app. The female then borrowed his phone charger to plug in her phone and she added two more stops. The first stop was to the incident location, the second stop was 97 Elm Street, and the third stop was going to be Gatewood Drive in Enfield, CT. 14, That, Ajanako then drove the female to the incident location and parked in front of the residence but she told him to turn down treet and to park by the rear parking lot of the residence. When he parked, she told him that she would be right back. She then got out of the vehicle and slammed his car door. He asked her why she had to slam his door and she apologized. Ajanako then watched the female go up a set of stairs that led to the second floor of the residence. When she went upstairs, she was wearing a red shirt and blue jeans and none of her clothing appeared to be ripped or damaged. Ajanako stated that he did not see any injuries anywhere on her body and she didn't make any claims to him that she had been injured. That, approximately 4 minutes after the female went up the stairs, he heard glass shattering from the area at the top of the stairs where the female went. He heard several things breaking and then heard a female yelling, "Help, Help". The screaming and the sound of things breaking lasted for approximately 5 minutes. Just as he was about to dial 911, Officers arrived on scene 16, That, Ajanako stated from the time that the female went upstairs to the second floor of the residence, no one else went upstairs and no one came down the stairs other than the police officers when they arrived. He then observed Officers walking out the female fare he had dropped off. When they brought her out of the residence, she was wearing the same clothes she had on prior to going inside the residence. He stated that only difference was that when she was brought out, she was all wet, and when she went up the stairs, she was dry. 17. That, the undersigned interviewed the eS Irizarry, regarding this incident; the following is a synopsis of her verbal and written statements. Irizarry stated that on 8/8/2021, at approximately 620PM, she heard loud banging coming _ | ona For approximately 9 minutes oF So, she heard loud banging and yelling however she couldn't hear what was being said. She then heard a female yell, "Help me". She recognized that female voice to be came 1, She called 911 at 634PM. She then called 911 back at 638PM to give updates. ‘The noise ontinued and police arrived shortly after. She did not see anyone going in or coming out during the incident as she stayed lam. *''e" the police arrived, she saw them taking a gir! out who she recognized as the Accused, 48. That, at approximately 2045 hours, the Accused was placed under arrest for being in violation of C.G.S. 53a-223, Violation of a Protective Order and transported to the Enfield Police Department by Officer Baldini to be further interviewed by Detectives Bailey and Lewis 19, That, while walking down the police department hallway and placing the Accused in the interview room, Detective Bailey observed the Accused was leaving wet footprints with her sneakers, The wet liquid appeared to be a mixture of water and a red blood like substance. He also observed a red blood like substance on the right hip area of her jeans, as well as on the back of her right arm and on both of her hands. 20. That, at approximately 2059 hours, The Accused was read her Miranda rights which she Voluntarily waived. The Accused then agreed to speak with Detectives Lewis and Bailey regarding the incident; the following is a synopsis of her interview. She also stated that she does not have any problems remembering things that recently occur. She stated that she had been invited over to Victim 1's residence to pick up some belongings and then “things got out of hand". When asked how things got out of hand, she repeatedly stated that she didn't know or that she could not remember. She got to the residence by way of an Uber ride from her place of employment, Staples. The Accused acknowledged that when she arrived, Victim 1 and Victim 2 were inside the apartment. She said that they were both alive and uninjured at that time and no one was in or came to the apartment prior to the police arriving. She stated that there was an argument and "it wasn't good’ but she stated she did not remember what wasn't good. She stated it "escalated so quickly" however when questioned further she could not explain how it escalated. The Accused stated that she had a black knife that was from the house and she had picked up. Detective Bailey asked the Accused where the knife was, and she stated that she guessed it was in Victim 2's pocket when she arrived. She stated that a knife was introduced to the argument and that Victim 2 came at her with the knife. She tried to push him, but she stated it didn’t work. She stated at some point she got the knife and when questioned as to what happened next, she stated, "not good things, clearly". She stated she didn't want to say what happened when she got the knife because it was "not good’. She stated that she was in the bedroom with Victim 1 and Victim 2 when she pushed Victim 2. She stated that she picked the knife up in the bedroom and when she picked it up, she hurt someone with the knife. When questioned further about who she hurt, she would not elaborate. The Accused then requested the services of a lawyer 21. That, Detective Bailey asked the Accused where she lives and she stated, She then stated that she is currently living n Enfiel CT. 22. The Accused is currently being held on a 1-million-dollar bond set by Judge Gold for the charge of 53a-223, Violation of a Protective Order. 23. That, it is requested that an arrest warrant be issued for the Accused, Harlee Swols (4/25/1999) of 25 Booth Road, Enfield, CT, 08082 for the charge of Murder, in violation of C.G.S. 53a-S4a (2 Counts) for the above-described incidents which occurred on August 8, 2021 in the town of Enfield, CT. Located in the home at the time of cntry was a female who wes identified as Harlee Swols 4-25-99, 25 Booth Road Enfield, Connecticul. Swols was the subject of a prior incident that led to a full protective order. While on scene Swols was placed under arrest and charged with Violation of @ Protective Order 53-223. ‘The accused was arraigned in Hartford Superior Court on Monday August 9, 2021, where bond was set at $1,000,000. The accused is currently in Department of Corrections Custody, ‘On August 11, 2021, the accused, Harlee Swols was placed under arrest and charged with (2) two counts of | Murder where bond was sct at $2,000,000 where she will be arraigned on those charges later today, The victims were idemtified as Maryrose Riach age 72 and James Samuel Bell age 63.
