Nature of Non-communicable Diseases (NCD)
Background Information for Learners

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, are not passed
from person to person. They are of long duration and generally slow progression. The four
main types of non-communicable diseases are a medical condition or disease that can be
defined as non-infectious and non-transmissible among people. NCDs can refer to chronic
diseases which last for long periods of time and progress slowly. Sometimes, NCDs result in
rapid deaths such as seen in certain types of diseases such as autoimmune diseases, heart
diseases, stroke, most cancers, asthma, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis,
Alzheimer's disease, cataracts, and many more. While sometimes (incorrectly) referred to as
synonymous with "chronic diseases", NCDs are distinguished only by their non-infectious
cause, not necessarily by their duration.

Learning Competency:
Explains non-communicable diseases based on cause and effect, signs and symptoms, risk
factors, and protective factors and possible complications. (Q4/Wks 1-3-H7DD-IVb-d-25)

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Background Information for Learners

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, tend to be of

long duration and are the result of a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental and
behaviors factors.

The main types of NCDs are cardiovascular diseases (like heart attacks and stroke),
cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and
asthma) and diabetes.

Non communicable diseases (NCDs) kill 41 million people each year, equivalent to
71% of all deaths globally.
Each year, 15 million people die from a NCD between the ages of 30 and 69 years;
over 85% of these "premature" deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
Cardiovascular diseases account for most NCD deaths, or 17.9 million people annually,
followed by cancers (9.0 million), respiratory diseases (3.9million), and diabetes (1.6 million).
These 4 groups of diseases account for over 80% of all premature NCD deaths.
Tobacco use, physical inactivity, the harmful use of alcohol and unhealthy diets all
increase the risk of dying from a NCD.
Detection, screening and treatment of NCDs, as well as palliative care, are key
components of the response to NCDs.
Ann Keeling of the NCD Alliance and CEO of the International Diabetes Federation
posed these questions during a session at The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria’s annual conference.
Her comments were made in one of the most intriguing sessions, on the role of the
private sector in addressing NCDs and lessons learned from the business community’s
response to HIV.
Another panelist, Clifford Panter of Mercedes-Benz South Africa, put the crisis posed
by NCDs in stark terms: “In the developing world, workers are increasingly being forced to
choose between work and health.”
Sonak Pastakia, a pharmacist who works in Kenya, echoed the challenges that
workers face when they have little access to health care or long wait times that make it
impossible for them to miss work to seek treatment.

Activity 2. FACT or BLUFF

Directions: Read the statement below, and determine if it is Fact or Bluff. If the statement is
fact write F before the number and if it is bluff write B before the no.
1. While NCDs are on the rise worldwide they disproportionately affect the poor and
marginalized. Keeling described diabetes as “a horrific intergenerational tax on the
poor,” given the human and economic cost when multiple family members suffer
from the disease
2. Half of the people worldwide who are affected by NCDs are working age, not elderly
3. Not all NCDs are preventable but about 80% of them can be prevented, delayed or
averted
4. Cost-effective technologies do exist to fight NCDs and while new ones are being
rolled out there’s still a need for investment in treatment and prevention
5. Behavior and lifestyle choices can be changed to prevent and manage NCDs.

5

An Ounce of Prevention, A Pound of Cure

Background Information for Learners

“Prevention is better than cure” according to the Dutch philosopher

Desiderius Erasmus in 1500. Thus, it is always better to avoid getting the disease
(sakit) than curing it (gamutin). Non-communicable diseases (NCD)
management is a lot easier than infectious ones since it cannot be spread
(naikakalat) from person to person. Thus, the prevention and control of them lies
within our hands. It is only a matter of how and when we practice these ways to
prevent getting sick especially that they are one of the leading causes of death
among Filipinos.

Let’s assess your knowledge on these healthy ways you can do to better improve how
you prevent and control non-communicable diseases that you already know from previous
lessons.

Learning Competency with code:

Activity 4. Prevention Advocacy

Directions: Help your own community to adopt healthier behaviors and change unhealthy
habits to prevent common NCDs by designing a NCD prevention campaign poster / slogan.
Focus on addressing one of the four common NCDs. Use a short bond paper for your output
to be submitted to your teacher. You can take a picture and spread the good news on your

Prevention and Control of Lifestyle Disease
Background Information for Learners

A lifestyle is the pattern of living that we follow - how we work, what and when we
eat, how and when we sleep, how much physical activity we do and whether we smoke or
consume alcohol. Lifestyle or non-communicable diseases are chronic (long term) in nature
and do not result from an acute (short term) infection nor do they spread from one person to
the other. These conditions cause dysfunction in the body and impair the quality of life. They
may also lead to death. These diseases usually develop relatively over long periods.
This leads to reduction in productivity and development of the country. As these are
chronic conditions, they are a financial burden for lifetime. Therefore, there is an increasing
concern these days about lifestyle diseases that can be easily prevented but not cured. Here
are some causes of Lifestyle disease:

1. Dehydration - Dehydration of the muscles and tendons is a primary cause of muscle

fatigue, strain, tendonitis, and other disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
2. Malnutrition - The lack of living foods in our diet along with the overconsumption
of dead foods causes chronic disease.
3. Inflammation – Inflammation is a primary cause of most lifestyle-related disorders,
including heart disease and musculoskeletal disorders.
4. Fatigue - Lack of sleep is associated with numerous, serious medical illnesses
including: high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, obesity, and mental impairment.
5. Poor physical fitness - It’s widely recognized that there’s a direct correlation
between poor levels of physical fitness and increased risk of chronic diseases. 6. Poor health
habits - Smoking, alcohol, drug use/abuse, sugar, fast food, soft drinks, chocolate, artificial
sweeteners, worry, and stress have a negative impact on your health.

Learning Competency:

Issues surrounding NCDs and other health risk factors have been getting their much
needed attention not just from the government, but from non- government organizations,
international development partners, and the private sector as well. Programs and policies and
developed and implemented to support the national goal of preventing and controlling NCDs.
NGOs and international development partners have thrown in their share, reaching more
people at the national level down to the communities, while the private sectors increasingly
invests in wellness and healthy lifestyle programs for their employees and in reaching out the
communities through activities in support of their corporate social responsibility.
