Digital Transformation in Agriculture

“Smart Farming System Using Sensors for Agriculture Task Automation”

From this case study, it showed that the major problem faced in many agricultural
areas is lack of mechanization in agricultural activities so, many of activities is carried
out by manual labour, using conventional tools such as plough, sickle, etc. also the
groundwater is polluted due to the usage of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, so the
researchers developed the system by using digital transformation to solve these
problems.

Even though there are various benefits from the system, in the future this system
might cause more cost to acknowledge the farmers to use it and also the internet must
be accessed in every area. Moreover, if there are any problems, the engineers who
developed the system may need to examine and fix it themselves because the
algorithms are very complicated.

The good thing about this system is that it is quite wild and covers every agricultural
context, so it is up to the developers which way they wanted to extend the system in
the future and which way is suitable for the farmers in each section.

To develop the smart farming in order to solve agricultural problems digital
transformation is quite important such as the researchers use Optocoupler or opto-
isolator as a sensors and GSM module received the signal, in the meantime, sensors
trigger also connected to green manure, seeds, compost, and water container. After the
triggering action, the necessary components are splashed on the field. By these
actions, not only digital transformation is important, but also the knowledge in
technology and engineering is required in the projects. Which means if professionals
in every department in each country are collaborated, they can improve agriculture to
reach its efficiency in the future.

In my point of view, adapting this system to Thai agriculture is quite hard to do.
Because the farmers have to control the system by having a wireless communication
with global system for mobile communication module (GSM) which means the
farmers must access the internet, unfortunately, not every area in Thailand can use the
internet. The system also used a lot of technology to develop them and many farmers
in Thailand don’t have enough knowledge to control the systems. But nothing is
impossible, I believe that if the farmers recieve more knowledge and innovations are
accessible in every area in Thailand, digital transformation will be able to solve tons
of problems in Thai agriculture.
