413.1 Description
This section covers the requirements for furnishing all equipment, materials, and labor for providing
and installing expansion joints in accordance with the required movements capacities, lines, profiles
and types shown on the Drawings or as ordered by the Employer’s Representative in accordance with
these Specifications.
Expansion joint is a manufactured assembly, including nosing, designed to carry traffic smoothly over
an expansion joint and to seal the joint against the ingress of water and debris.
The expansion joint system and its steel components shall be designed to accommodate multi-
directional movements and support live loads as specified in AASHTO Standard Specifications for
Highway Bridges, 2002.
The expansion joints shall be provided on the slab of bridge as shown on the Drawings or as directed
by the Employer’s Representative. All materials shall be as shown on the Drawings.
The Contractor shall provide shop drawings of the proposed makes and type of expansion joint to the
Employer’s Representative for review and approval.
The Contractor shall prepare a quality plan for the inspection, testing and documentation of the steel,
rubber and bearing elements within the expansion joints for acceptance by the Employer’s
Representative.
A test assembly of the joint structure in its entirety shall be performed in the shop. The erection of the
joints shall be done in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and a specialist fitter from the
manufacturer shall participate in the erection at the bridge site.
As a part of his documentation, the Contractor shall furnish a declaration of compatibility stating that
the joint is suitable for functioning under the existing conditions regarding supports and arrangement
of the supporting structure.
The following particulars of the proposed fabricated expansion joints shall be made available to the
Employer’s Representative for acceptance:
1) Details of type of expansion joint and the name and address of the manufacturer,
4) Details of materials for making good adjoining road surfaces and nosing, including
reinforcement, jointing and curing details,
If required by Employer’s representative, the Contractor shall submit proposed alternative mechanical
expansion joint in view of ease in maintenance.:
Particulars of the proposed fabricated expansion joints stated in Section 417.2 shall be made available
to the Employer’s Representative for acceptance.
413.4 Workmanship
413.4.1 Storage
Fabricated expansion joints shall be stored off the ground on level supports and in a manner, which
does not result in damage or deformation to the expansion joint, or in contamination of the expansion
joint.
Fabricated expansion joints shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.
The installation shall be carried out by the supplier of the expansion joint. Relative movement between
components and supports of a fabricated expansion joint shall be prevented during installation of the
joint and during placing and hardening of concrete and mortar under the components. Joint components
shall be free to move longitudinally relative to each other.
When one side of a fabricated expansion joint is being set, the other side shall be free from longitudinal
restraint. Strong backs or templates used to locate the sides of a joint shall not be fixed to both sides at
any one time.
The gap between fabricated expansion joints and the adjoining road surface or nosing shall be made
good after installation of the joint with material which has properties as similar as practicable to those
of the material in the adjoining road surface.
Contractor’s Equipment or other vehicles shall not cross-fabricated expansion joints or adjacent road
surfaces until installation of the joint is complete. Ramps shall be provided to allow the vehicles to
cross without loads being applied to the joint.
Expansion joints shall be protected against corrosion by a protective coating selected by the Contractor
to suit the environment of Site. The Contractor shall provide evidence for the acceptance of the
Employer’s Representative of the satisfactory use of the proposed protective coating in a similar
environment and subject to similar use elsewhere.
413.6 Tolerances
The road surface abutting the expansion joints shall before the joint measured in the driving direction
be at least 1 mm and not more than 3 mm above the surface of the joint and after the joint between 0
and 1 mm below the joints.
The Contractor shall provide evidence of the satisfactory long-term performance of the proposed joints
in similar situations in term of climatic and operating conditions with regard to wear, riding quality,
water-tightness and maintenance.
The Quantity to be measured and paid for shall be the number of linear meters of completed and
accepted expansion joint. premolded Joint filler, sealant, grout, epoxy base, anchorages and other items
necessary to complete the expansion joint assembly as shown on the Drawings shall not be measured
for payment and shall be deemed subsidiary to this item.
The quantities measured shall be paid for at the contract unit price for which price and payment shall
be full compensation for furnishing all documentation and submittals, materials, labor, equipment,
tools, testing, supervision, transportation, shipping and storage costs, test assembly and incidentals
necessary to complete the work.
The payment shall be deemed to include full compensation for all additional materials and work not
shown on the Drawings or specified which are necessary to complete the installation.
No special payment shall be made for special curb units, cover plates and transition strips.
SS 418.1 Description
This Item consist of furnishing and installing metal decking to serve as forms for concrete deck
slab in conformity with the lines, profiles and type shown on the Drawings, this Specification and/or as
directed/approved by the Employer’s Representative.
