    2020 (MONDAY) WRITING : TOPIC SENTENCE

    Note:

    The TOPIC SENTENCE in a paragraph states the main idea of the


    paragraph. In a piece of writing, it is important to write a topic sentence
    to tell your audience the main idea. While it usually appears in the
    beginning of a paragraph, it also can be in the middle or the end of it.

    Topic: Are life jackets important?

    Example paragraph: Everyone should wear a life jacket when they are
    on a boat. Life jackets have been proven to save lives. No one can
    predict when an accident might happen. There may not be enough time to
    put on a life jacket, but if uou are alredy wearing it, it may save your life.
    Therefore, from the example above, the topic sentence helps to state
    the main idea – the topic ‘Are life jackets important?’ , and it appears in
    the beginning of the paragraph.

    Exercise: (students may have verying answers.)

    Below are topic sentences. Write what you think the topic is for each one.

    1. Reading is the most important subject in school because reading is


    necessary in order to learn all the other subjects.
    What is the most important subject in school?
    2. Having friends and being a good friend can sometimes be hard.
    Is it easy to be a friend?
    3. Mobile phone should be turned off during class time because if
    they ring, they can distract all the students.
    Should students be allowed to turn on their mobile phone in
    class?
    4. You can save water by turning off the faucet when you brush your
    teeth, fixing any leaks in the pipes and takinga a shower instead of
    a bath.
    Ways of saving water.
    5. After-school activities are a good way for students to have fun,
    stay our of trouble, and learn different talents.
    The advantages of after-school activities.
    6. A pet can teach you responsibility, give you love, and be there when
    you need a friend.
    The benefits of owning a pet.
    7. E-wallet may cause people to overspend because it is easy to swipe,
    tap, or click without noticing how much you spend.
    The downside of E-wallet.
    8. The trend of owning the latest device among youngsters is wasteful
    because they are paying a high price for something that will only be
    stylish for a short period of time.
    The disadvantage of owning technological devices among
    youngsters.
    9. People are often too busy with work especially in this modern age
    and they find it is hard to set aside time for exercising.
    Why people don’t exercise? / The reason why people do not
    exercise.
    10. Travelling can be expensive but a fulfilling experience to young
    people as they are able to visit the many different places around
    the world to see the various cultures and traditions.
    Do you agree that travelling is expensive for young people? /
    Should young people be encouraged to travel more?
