The importance of knowing a foreign language

The world becomes more and more connected with each year and our need to communicate
becomes more evident. That is where the importance of learning another language is born,
now the era of globalization makes it become a necessity. Therefore, the benefits of knowing
more than one language are many. These benefits range from being able to watch a movie
without subtitles to finding a favorable job and thriving in it using the knowledge of a foreign
language.Knowing a second language enhances social and cultural life because it helps
establish a link with other parts of the world, adds value to your resume and thus to your
economic status, and improves mental acuity.

Nowadays, mastering one or more foreign languages is an almost essential requirement in

many job offers. If you improve your skills in this regard, there will be more opportunities to
access the job market. In addition, language skills will make it easier for you to succeed in your
career. You may have to communicate with foreign clients in your job, so foreign language
skills will open doors for you to succeed in your job.

Being able to travel, apart from offering you a disconnection from your routine, will help you
to get to know other countries, cultures, people and, in general, open your mind to novelty
and diversity. Even if you can travel without knowing the language, the experience will not be
the same. Traveling with the knowledge of other languages will allow you to interact with
people, understand better all the information and have a much more enriching travel
experience. Therefore, if we master another language, we are approaching a world of
opportunities, of possibilities that favor our development and also that of society, since, if we
look at it this way, a communicated society opens its doors to commerce, tourism, innovations,
information, better living conditions for all. One of the most important advantages of learning
another language is the way in which it favors the cognitive development of people, especially
when they are beginning their school cycle. Students not only construct meaning by using the
language in the social context, but also by thinking and reasoning about the language itself. In
this way, the view of language shifts from a social and interactive one to a cognitive one. This
view suggests that the use of different languages favors the development of higher thinking
skills such as analysis, synthesis and transfer, among others.

In conclusion, it is correct to affirm that speaking English is a significant part of a person's

integral development, since it also favors the acquisition of cognitive skills; in addition, it
allows him/her to communicate in a world whose borders are continually crossed, and thus
the possibility of obtaining study and/or employment opportunities may increase.
