CUFBA - SONG 1: SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE by R.E.M.

PART 1: INTRODUCTION

1. READING. Read this text about the band. Leé este texto sobre la banda.

R.E.M. was an American rock group, the quintessential college rock

band of the 1980s. The name of the band “R.E.M.” stands for a
dream-state condition (rapid eye movement). The group was
formed in 1980 in Athens, Georgia, a university town about 65 miles
(105 km) northeast of Atlanta. The members were:
- lead singer Michael Stipe (b. January 4, 1960, Decatur, Georgia,
U.S.),
- guitarist Peter Buck (b. December 6, 1956, Berkeley, California), -
bassist Mike Mills (b. December 17, 1958, Orange, California), and
- drummer Bill Berry (b. July 31, 1958, Duluth, Minnesota).

They released their debut extended-play recording Chronic Town

in 1982. Chronic Town was well-received, paving the way for the
group's full-length debut album in 1983: Murmur, which was
welcomed with enthusiastic reviews upon its spring release.

In the 90s the band grew greatly with the release of the album Out
of Time in 1991 which sold more than 10 million copies. By this time,
R.E.M. was an alternative rock band recognised worldwide, ahead
of groups such as U2 in the sales charts. In this album we can find
some of their greatest hits: the single "Losing My Religion", and the
single "Shiny Happy People" in which they sang with Kate Pierson,
the vocalist of the band The B-52's.

After enjoying considerable international success, unexpectedly, in

September 2011, R.E.M. announced their amicable breakup after 31
years together.
