Exogenic Processes

Our Earth is a dynamic planet. It undergoes continuous change. These

changes are caused by different Geologic Processes that can be classified as Exogenic
processes and endogenic processes. This module will deal with the Exogenic
Processes.

Exogenic processes refer to changes that occur on the surface of the earth due
to different energy sources like the sun, water, wind, gravity, and of course living
things.

This module will serve as a guide of the student to have a better
appreciation to the different Exogenic processes.

What’s New

There are several types of exogenous processes. These are weathering, mass

movement, and deposition. All these processes change the surface of the earth.

Weathering is the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces or transformation of rocks

into a different substance. The two (2) types of weathering are:

1. Disintegration

2. Transformation

1. Disintegration -breaking of rocks and their minerals into smaller pieces.

Disintegration occurs when physical agents like atmosphere, wind,

water, and living thing causes rocks to break down into smaller pieces without

changing the chemical components of the rock and mineral.

2. Transformation- formation of a new substance out of the rocks or their

mineral components.
 Chemical weathering is brought about the reaction between the rocks and/or

its minerals reacts with chemical agents that causes the rock to form substances

that have different chemical properties from the original rocks.

All these weathered materials are transported to another area by flowing

agents like a strong wind, gravity, running water, and iceberg. The tendency of all

these activities is to flatten the surface.

Mass Wasting or Mass Movement refers to the large mass of earth materials

being moved by gravity along a slope. Mass movement can be brought about by

landslide, rock fall, avalanche, or creep.

However, other forces like geologic, climatic and human in origin can contribute to

mass wasting. And these movements of earth materials can cause damage to life,

property and livelihood of man.

Deposition occurs when earth materials settles in low lying areas like at the base of

a mountain or hill, bottom of rivers or the sea, or form river deltas.

 What is It

disintegration of rocks.
