INTRODUCTION
In this module, you will learn about the different art forms and the attire, fabric or
tapestries of Southeast Asia. How each attire and art forms differ to each other? Many forms of
visual art like painting, architecture, sculpture, and the combined arts-like dance and theater-art
based on the life of mythical beings, gods and goddesses, and legendary heroes.

Attire, Fabrics, and Tapestry


What are the attires, fabrics and tapestries of the Southeast Asian Countries?
Indonesia

The kebaya and batik shirt serve as the upper


garment. These are paired with kemben and sarong
(a cloth wrapped around the hips). The word batik
alsocomes from the Javanese word tik, which means
“to dot”.

Malaysia

Malaysian batik shirt has been influence by


Javanese batik but designs are larger and simple.
Because of the mixed race and influences, Baju
kurung and Baju melayu were chosen as national
costumes. Baju kurung is for women and Baju
melayu is for men.

Thailand

Thailand has its own traditional fabric called Thai


silk. Traditional Thai clothing is called chut thai,
which literally means "Thai outfit". It can be worn
by men, women, and children.

Cambodia

The most typical and common type of Cambodian


costume – sampot is named as a sarong.

Myanmar

The most widely recognized Burmese national


costume is the longyi, which is worn by both males
and females nationwide.

Vietnam

The Viatnamese national costume, Ao-dai, is a tight-


fitting tunic worn over pantaloons, and their conical
hat non la.

Brunei

The national costume of Brunei is also Baju kurung


for girls and Baju cara melayu for boys.

Lao PDR (Laos)

“Sinh” means “clothes” is the traditional costume of


Lao women in the form of a silk tube skirt. Salong
is the traditional costume of Lao men.

Singapore
Singapore has 4 traditional dresses because of
influences from other neighboring countries.
1. Cheongsam
2. Baju Kurung and Baju melayu- Baju
Kurung is a traditional Singapore costume as
well as the national dress of Malaysia and
Brunei.
3. Sarong Kebaya- A symbol of dignity for the

4. Sari- a long strip of fabric worn around the
body in different styles.

Elements of Art
Art elements are considered as the building blocks of art.
1. Lines- represents an actual line, a person, or a building. Artists use lines to define and
enclose spaces. It could be thick or thin; straight, wavy, curved, or angular; continuous or
broken; dotted, dashed, or a combination of any of these.
Example of Lines:

2. Shape and Form- are defined by artists using lines and contrast in color and texture. These
shapes in objects can take on various forms like squares, rectangles, triangles, circles,
oblongs, other 2 dimensional objects, and forms could be animal form, human form,
things like vase form, book form, etc., cube, pyramid, and other 3-dimensional shape or
object.

3. Value/Tone- refers to the use of light and dark within a piece of art. It could be light or
dark.
4. Color- is produce when artists use various pigments and dyes to create a range of different
hues which the viewer’s eyes and brain interpret as colors. Example colors are red, yellow,
green and so on.
5. Texture- refers roughness and smoothness in visual arts. It could be rough or smooth.
6. Space- refers to the physical space within objects and the area that separates them. The area
occupied by objects is called the “positive space” while the area between the object is often
referred to as “negative space”.

Principles of Art
Principles of art are the rules and techniques that artists use to create works of art. They can also
be used as basis in saying something about the works of art.
1. Rhythm and Movement- Rhythm in art refers to the repetition of a motif or elements of art
(lines, shapes, colors, etc.) at regular or irregular intervals.
2. Balance- Consistency of art elements in various areas in artwork. Balance could be in the
form of the following:
a. Symmetrical balance- when same shapes, colors, and other art elements are
evenly distributed on either side of either the vertical or horizontal midpoint of a
piece.
b. Asymmetrical balance- when different shapes, colors, and other art elements are
evenly distributed on either side of the vertical or horizontal midpoint of a piece.
c. Radial symmetry- when various art elements (shapes, lines, colors, branch off
from a central point.
3. Emphasis- There is emphasis when an extraordinary or a different line, color, or shape is
placed in the midst of a regular pattern.
4. Harmony- When the art elements like colors, shapes, and lines, complement one another,
harmony is created. It could be complement or did not complement.
5. Unity - There is unity in an art when there is sense of oneness, wholeness in an art
elements. It could be there is unity or there is no unity.
6. Variety- A principle of design concerned with diversity or contrast.

We always inculcate in our mind that each country has a lot to offer when it comes to the
arts and culture. Arts are the window of the past. It shows events and important matters from the
past.

relation to what you have learned in this module. Tell how you can apply it in your daily life and
