BOILER ACCESSORIES

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.01 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

A. Provide accessories associated with the boilers as


needed for a complete and proper installation. Product
specific requirements are contained herein; Section
15501, General Provisions for Heating, Ventilating and
Air Conditioning Work, shall be referred to for
general requirements.

B. Boiler accessories specified in this Section include


steam/water safety relief valves and steam boiler
blowdown separators.

1.04 SUPPLEMENTAL QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Codes and Standards: ASME Compliance: Construct and


install boiler accessories in accordance with ASME:
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code. Install boiler
accessories in accordance with ASME B 31.1: Power
Piping, or ASME B 31.9: Building Service Piping, as
applicable. Comply with requirements of NYS and NYC
Boiler Codes.

2.01 MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURERS

A. Safety and Relief Valves:

1. Steam Safety Valves

a. Safety valves shall be set and sealed to


discharge at 15 pounds per square inch
pressure. Seal shall be so attached to
valve, that the seal must be broken before
the valve can be disassembled.

b. Cast-Iron or Bronze Safety Valves: Construct


of cast iron or bronze, with all bronze/brass
trim, and fully enclosed spring.

c. A chain and pulley attachment to operate the


lifting level of the valve and a "gag" or
"gag bar" shall be provided. Each boiler
safety valve shall also be provided with a
3/8" drain pipe connection embedded in the
covering of the boiler and extended to a
point near the floor.

d. Safety valves shall be mounted on an extra


heavy cast iron Y-base or any other mounting
base recommended by the Boiler/Burner unit
Manufacturer. The use of a Y-base
constructed of standard weight steel pipe and
standard weight cast iron fittings will also
be accepted, provided that the cross-
sectional areas of the pipes and fittings
comply with ASME requirements.

e. No safety valve will be approved unless it


can be "gagged" without interfering with the
valve setting.

f. Each steam safety valve shall be plainly


marked by the manufacturer in such a way that
the markings will not be obliterated in
service. The markings may be stamped on the
casing or stamped or cast on a heavy plate
securely fastened to the casing and shall
contain the following markings:

1) The name or identifying trademark of the


manufacturer.

2) Size in inches (The pipe size of the


valve inlet).

3) Pressure in pounds per square inch


(steam pressure at which it is set to
blow).

4) Capacity in pounds of steam per hour.

5) ASME symbol.

2. Water Relief Valves:

a. Pressure Relief Valves: Construct of bronze


body, metallic disc, metal seat, with
nonmechanically guided stem. Set valve to
relieve at 15 psig above operating pressure.

B. Boiler Blowdown Separators or Tanks:

1. Provide in accordance with the following:

a. Tank: Construct of carbon steel, with


2 tangential inlet pipe and stainless steel
striking or wearing plate, vent opening,
discharge opening with spiral formed
discharge directing plate, supported on 3 or
more support legs of indicated height as per
manufacturer’s recommendations. The blowdown

or blowoff tanks shall utilize dip tube on


the outlet connection of the tank.

b. Water Inlet: Provide cold water inlet in


discharge pipe, and 2 thermometer wells.

c. Specialties: Provide temperature regulating


valve in water inlet with temperature sensing
bulb in lower thermometer well; bi-metallic
thermometer in upper thermometer well; and Y-
type strainer in cold water inlet line
upstream of temperature regulating valve.
Provide backflow prevention device in water
inlet.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01 SUPPLEMENTAL INSTALLATION

A. Safety and Relief Valves

1. Steam Safety Valves: Install on top of boilers.


Pipe discharge to floor drain for low-pressure
service. Pipe drain outlets of drip pan elbow to
floor drain.

2. Water Relief Valves: Install on top of boilers.


Pipe discharge to floor drain.

C. Boiler Blowdown Separators: Install boiler blowdown


separators on concrete pad. Connect drain to sewer,
and vent to or tanks outdoors. Connect boiler
blowdown inlet piping, and cold water supply piping
with shutoff valve, strainer, and temperature
regulator valve. Install temperature regulator valve
bulb and thermometer in thermometer wells in blowdown
separator discharge.

3.02 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Flush and clean boiler accessories upon completion of


installation, and in accordance with manufacturer's
installation instructions.

B. Hydrostatically test, if required, assembled boiler


accessories and piping in accordance with applicable
sections of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

Notes to Specifier (Delete from Specification)


1. The salvage of equipment scheduled to be removed is to be
addressed in the scoping/design phase of new projects. The
A/E of Record shall contact the DoED Central Repair Shops in
order to determine whether there is any interest in
salvaging the components scheduled to be removed. Equipment
designated to be salvaged shall be specified by the A/E to
be delivered by the Contractor to a location designated by
Shops. The specific equipment to be salvaged and specific
delivery location shall be precisely detailed in the bid
documents.

2. Boiler blowdown separators are used when the steam boilers


are mounted on a floor above the lowest floor.
