Problem set 2: Traffic stream characteristics

Problem 1
A volume of 900 veh/h is observed at an intersection approach. Find the peak rate of flow
within an hour for the following peak-hour factors: 1:00, 0.90. 0.80, and 0.70. Plot and
comment on the results.

Problem 2
A freeway detector records an occupancy of 0.255 for a 15-minute period. If the detector is of
1.00 m length, and the average vehicle length of 6 m, what is the density implied in this
measurement?

Problem 3
The following counts were taken on a major arterial during the evening peak period (Table 1).
From this data determine the following:
a) The peak hour, b) the peak hour volume, c) the peak flow rate within the peak hour and d)
the peak-hour factor (PHF).

5:15-5:30 PM 310 6 132
5:30-5:45 PM 280
5:45 -6:00PM 240

Problem 4
The following (Table 2 above) travel times were measured for vehicles as they traversed 2.0 –
km section of a highway. Compute the time mean and space-mean speed.

Problem 5
A study of speed-flow-density relationships at a particular site has resulted in the following
calibrated relationship: v = 61.2 exp (-0.015 k)
(a) Determine the free-flow speed and jam density for the relationship.
(b) Derive equations for flow and density, and speed and flow for this site
(c) Determine the capacity of the segment mathematically.
