Scatterplots – Practice 9.1A

Describe the correlation you would expect between the data. Explain.
1)The age of an automobile and its odometer reading.

It is a positive correlation because as the older the automobile is the higher the odometer reading.

2)The amount of time spent fishing and the amount of bait in the bucket.

It is a negative correlation because as the time passes spent on fishing the less bait in the bucket.

3)The number of passengers in a car and the number of traffic lights on the route.

There is no correlation because the factors are not affecting each other.

4)The table shows the heights (in feet) of the waves at a beach and the numbers of surfers at the beach.

Wave Height 3 6 5 1 4
Number of
24 61 56 15 35
Surfers

a) Plot the data from the table on the graph.

b) Describe the relationship between the two data sets.

It is a positive correlation because the relationship between the two data sets is that the higher the wave height
the more number of surfers there are.
c) How many surfers might be at the beach if the waves
were 2 feet high?
If the waves were 2 feet height there would be approximately 20 surfers at the beach.

5)The scatter plot shows the numbers of lawns mowed by a local lawn care business during one week.

a)How many days does it take to mow 30 lawns?

4 days

b)About how many lawns can be mowed in 1 day?

12
c)Describe the relationship shown by the data.

It is a positive correlation because the relationship shown by the data

is that the more days are worked the more lawns are mowed.

6)Describe the relationship between the data. Identify any outliers, gaps, or clusters.

a) b)

Gaps between x axis in graph A do not exist, because there is no such of a half person. The outlier in graph B
is on the 24 monitor size inch. The clusters are on the 15 monitor size inch. This two graphs are a positive
correlation because the bigger the family size the more laundries there are and just like in graph B the bigger
the monitor size the higher the price is.
7)The table shows the numbers of students remaining on an after-school bus and the numbers of minutes since
leaving the school.

2 26 32
Minutes 0 5 9 15
3
Number of 1 6 0
56 45 39 24
students 7

a) Plot the data from the table on the graph.

b) Describe the relationship between the two data sets.

It is a negative correlation because as the minutes increase the number of students decrease.

8)The scatter plot shows the numbers of bushels filled and the numbers of apples picked.

a) How many bushels are needed for 350 apples?

16

b) About how many apples can be placed in 8 bushels?

175

c) Describe the relationship shown by the data.

It is a positive correlation because the relationship shown by the data is that the more apples picked the
more bushes are filled.

Scatterplots & Line of Best Fit – Practice 9.2A

1) The scatter plot shows the weights y of an infant from birth through x months.

a) At what age did the infant weigh 11 pounds?

3
b) What was the infant’s weight at birth?
7
c) Draw a line that you think best approximates the points.

d) Write an equation for your line.

Y= 15\12x+7

e) Use the equation to predict the weight of the infant at 18 months.

29.5

f) Does the data show a positive, a negative, or no relationship?

Positive correlation.
2) The table shows the numbers of losses y a gamer has x weeks after getting a new video game.

Week, x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Losses, 1
15 10 7 6 3 1
y 2

a) Make a scatter plot of the data.

b) Draw a line of fit.

c) Write an equation of the line of fit.

Y= - 10/8x +18
d) Does the data show a positive, a negative,
or no relationship?
Negative
e) Interpret the relationship.
As the number of weeks decreases the number of losses increases.

3)The scatter plot shows the relationship between the numbers of girls and
the numbers of boys in 10 different classrooms.

a) What type of relationship, if any, does the data show?

No correlation.

b) Is it possible to find the line of fit for the data? Explain.

No, because the pattern does not exist

c) Is it reasonable to use this scatter plot to predict the number

of boys in the classroom based on the number of girls? Explain.
No, a prediction is not possible from a scatter graph that has no pattern/

4) The scatter plot shows the costs y of bottles containing x fluid ounces of juice.

a) How much does a gallon of juice cost?

12
b) How many fluid ounces of juice can you purchase for $3?
20

c) Draw a line that you think best approximates the points.

d) Write an equation for your line.

Y= ½ x +2
e) Use the equation to predict the cost of a 256-fluid
ounce container of juice.
130
f) Does the data show a positive, a negative, or no relationship?
Positive

5)The table shows the mortgage interest rates y at a local bank for the years 2000 through 2008.

Year since 2000, x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

6. 5. 5.
Rate (%), y 7.6 6.2 6.0 5.8 6.1 5.5
8 2 9
a) Make a scatter plot of the data.

b)Draw a line of fit.

c)Write an equation of the line of best fit.

Y=-3x+73
d)Use the equation to predict the mortgage interest rate
for the year 2010.
4.8%

e)Does the data show a positive, a negative,

or no relationship?
Negative
f)Interpret the relationship.

As the years increase the mortage rates decrease.

6)The scatter plot shows the relationship between the age of an individual x and the cost of admission y to a
show.

a) What type of relationship does the data show?

No correlation

b) Draw a line of fit.

c) Write an equation of the line of best fit.

Y=4

d) Interpret the relationship.

As the age increases the cost still remains the same.
