Food safety issue: Suspected food poisoning downs 231 in Pasig City

Over 200 guests who attended former First Lady Imelda Marcos' 90th
birthday party were taken to hospitals in Pasig City on Wednesday with food
poisoning symptoms. The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of
Pasig City raced to the Ynares Sports Complex. A total of 231 people were
hospitalized as of 3 p.m., according to the report. During the party, everyone ate
chicken adobo with hardboiled egg.

The birthday celebration began about 11 a.m., according to the Eastern

Police District. The majority of those there were Marcos supporters. According to
police and emergency personnel, the patients were dizzy and vomited after eating
the adobo. Eight ambulances and staff from the Philippine Red Cross were
dispatched to provide first aid to the victims before they were transported to
hospitals. Around 2,500 individuals were believed to have attended the birthday
celebration, according to authorities. Despite the event, the former first lady's
celebration went on as planned.

According to Agence France-Presse, one of the attendees believes the

illness was brought on by the party food. “Because I wasn't hungry, I simply ate
the egg and a small amount of steamed rice. “I vomited and was taken to Rizal
Medical Center by ambulance, where I was given an IV drip,” the lady told AFP.

The food poisoning, according to Duque, might be caused by a toxin

produced by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus, which can be found on people's
skin. Although the bacteria are often innocuous, they can cause severe infections
that can result in sepsis or death.

It might have originated from the eggs,” says the narrator. The visitors
tasted the eggs, which might be tainted, according to reports,” he added.
According to a dzBB report, during the celebration, two caterers provided food:
one for VIP guests and another for common visitors, the majority of whom were
transported to neighboring hospitals.

The Food and Drug Administration, DOH Disease Prevention and Control Bureau,
and other regulatory divisions of the department will investigate the event's
caterer, according to Duque.

The packed lunches were “brought by a group of supporters, which they shared
among the loyalists who came early,” according to lawyer Larry Gadon, who
attended the event.
“It wasn't a catered meal... Gadon said, "The gathering was arranged by loyalists."

Imelda’s son, Bongbong, issued an apology, as he pledged the family would

help those who were sick.

The handling and preparation of the supplied food packets, in my opinion,

is the source of food illness, particularly spoiled eggs. I believe it was made early
in the morning because they needed to prepare 2000 pieces of that specific food
and it would take time to do so. In addition, I believe the people who prepared
the food were not wearing personal protective equipment because poisoning
could be caused by toxin from Staphylococcus aureus—bacteria found on
people’s skin—according to Duque.
I suggest wearing personal protective equipment should be mandatory
while handling and preparing foods at all times, this will not just protect the
health of the people who are handling and preparing the food but also the
consumers. I know that it has already been implemented but, I think it is not
enough. We should educate people more regarding food safety procedures
because our health is very important.
