(OUTCOME-BASED MODULE)

MODULE 2
ANALYZING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PRIMARY SOURCES
TO THE HISTORY OF THE FILIPINO PEOPLE

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

This module emphasizes the importance of familiarizing oneself about the different kinds of
historical sources. The historian’s primary tool of understanding and interpreting the past is the
historical sources. Historical sources ascertain historical facts. Such facts are then analyzed and
interpreted by the historian to weave historical narrative.
Specifically, historians who study certain historical subjects and events need to make use of
various primary sources in order to weave the narrative. Primary sources as discussed are consist of
document, memoir, accounts, and other materials that were produced at the period of the event or
subject being studied.

HOME ACTIVITIES:

A. History Repeats Itself

Instructions: Read carefully the list of grievances of the Filipinos against Governor Wood
which led to the Cabinet Crisis of 1923. The crisis was characterized by the tension between the
American-led executive branch of governor and the Filipino-dominated legislative branch of
government. In Philippine politics, there was always a tension between the executive and
legislative branches of government.

In the administration of President Duterte, this tension seems to be evident. Compare

and contrast the Cabinet Crisis of 1923 to the conditions and situations that persist during the
term of President Duterte.

Explain your observations in at least 300 words.

During the “cabinet crisis” of 1923, the Filipino members of the  cabinet, Abad Santos
among them, relinquished their posts to protest Governor-General Wood's handling of the
Conley Case. War broke out on December 8, 1941, the feast day of the Immaculate Conception,
and the Japanese invasion of the Philippines.
It is true that there has always been a tension between the executive and legislative
branches of the Philippine government. In the administration of President Duterte, the
legislative body negatively reacted to some of his presidential actions like the tokhang where
the importance of due process was neglected. Many people died, including those innocent ones,
just to complete that said action.
As Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte set into motion a proposal to amend the 1987
constitution to set up a federal system of government to end conflict and give a further boost to
the economy, there were undeniable disagreements from the legislative branch of our
government.

B. Assessing the importance of Primary Sources in Understanding the Grand Narrative of

Philippine History
Instructions: Give three (3) reasons why Filipino grievances against Governor Wood is
important to the grand narrative of Philippine history.
1. The document is an eyewitness account which serves as enough proof to show the real
happenings and events during those times.
2. It showed that the Philippine was under (indirectly) the US and that we were fooled by false
promises.
3. It serves as a reminder that we must learn to stand in our own feet and be independent. We
must learn not to easily trust people because we do not know their real intentions.
