A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to Canada’s $14 billion steel industry, and to the over 20,000
people it employs across the country.
For over a century, our industry has been a pillar of Canada’s industrial
economy, producing a wide range of high quality steel products to serve
the needs of the Canadian and export steel markets. In 2012, only
seven other countries used more steel per capita than Canada. Today,
the member companies of the Canadian Steel Producers Association
(CSPA) continue to make a strong contribution nationally and locally. This
contribution includes:
• Annual shipments of $12-14 billion, adding value to Canadian
natural resources
• Capital investments of over $2 billion in the past four years
• Investments of $25 million in 2012 to train today’s steelworkers for
an ever more complex work future
• Over $12 thousand suppliers of goods and services across Canada
• Community charitable contributions of over $20 million, with
employee and corporate participation in many community
organizations
In these and many other ways, Canada’s steel industry is a significant part
of Canada’s industrial fabric, and its future. Steel is more than an industry
sector – it is integral to Canada’s automotive, energy, manufacturing, and
construction supply chains That is why we say that “Steel Makes Canada
Stronger”.
In Membership Directory 2014, the CSPA is pleased to profile its member
companies, and the products they manufacture in Canada. To find out
more about our industry, visit us at www.canadiansteel.ca

THE IMPORTANCE OF STEEL IN CANADA’S ECONOMY

The manufacturing sector is an integral part of Canada’s economy and an

important source of good jobs for millions of Canadians. Steel is an integral
part of major Canadian industrial clusters. Steel manufacturing, combined
with supplier and customer industries, is a significant job creator that drives
economic growth in communities across the country.
Canadian steel is a driving force in innovation and advancement. The indus-
try has invested more than $2 billion over the past three years in workforce
training, new technologies and better processes to make Canadian steel
more innovative, less expensive and stronger than ever. These investments are
paying dividends. More than half of all types of steel did not exist 18 years
ago. Stronger, lighter steels contribute, for example, to more fuel efficient
automotive products.
Our industry has also significantly decreased its environmental footprint.
Since 1990, the steel industry’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been
cut 21%, with reductions of over 15 % in GHG and energy use per tonne of
production in emissions intensity.
Steel is also a major factor in the North American movement towards energy
independence. Almost all energy sources require steel in some capacity, from
the development of oil and gas resources and electricity generation facilities,
pipelines and transmission networks, and the construction of wind turbines.
To ensure that the Canadian steel industry remains strong, it is vital that gov-
ernments pursue “pro-manufacturing” policies—tax measures, programs and
regulations—that strengthen the competitiveness of Canadian industry and its
ability to create and sustain thousands of good Canadian jobs. This includes
policies that:
• Enable Canadian industry to compete in domestic and export markets
through rules-based trade with effective trade remedy laws to address
non-market distortions;
• Drive innovation to encourage stronger productivity through further
investments in advanced technologies and development of a highly-
skilled workforce;
• Promote industry sustainability through balanced regulations that
combine environmental, technological, and economic factors;
• Further development of Canada’s energy resources to help ensure
that Canadian manufacturing has access to competitive, reliable
energy sources; and
• Encourage the development of a world-class, competitive transporta-
tion system and make the long term investments necessary to address
Canada’s infrastructure gap.

by RTFT’s customers. The rods produced
are of the highest quality and are used
in demanding applications such as cold
heading, tire cord, piano wire, springs and
welding electrodes.The square billets are
mainly produced in 160 x 160 square mil-
limetre cross-sections and up to 16 meters
in length.

SORELSTEELTM round billets are also pro-
