Gawad Sa Manlilikha NG Bayan (National Living Treasure Award)
The Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Award is conferred on Filipinos who are at the forefront of the practice, preservation, and
promotion of the nation’s traditional folk arts.
The state’s recognition of such sociocultural contributions was formalized in 1992 through RA 7355, The Manlilikha ng Bayan Act.
The main objective of the award is to honor and support traditional folk artists and to see to it that their skills and crafts are preserved.
The award is tied with a program that ensures the transfer of their skills to the next generation and the promotion of the craft both
locally and internationally.
CRITERIA
A. Should be a Filipino Citizen or group of citizens belonging to an indigenous or traditional cultural community anywhere in the
Philippines, engaged in Filipino traditional art in the following categories:
Folk architecture, maritime transport, weaving, carving, performing arts, literature, graphic and plastic arts, ornament, textile or fiber
art, pottery, and other artistic expression of traditional culture.
b. Should have engaged in the tradition and craft for significant period of time with atleast 50 years of existence and documentation.
c. Should have produced and performed of artistic, distinctive, and superior quality.
d. Should possess mastery of the tools and materials that are needed for the art and must have a reputation for being a n art master and
craft maker in the community he belongs.
e. Should have passed on and/or will pass on the traditional crafts and skills to other members of the community by virtue of teaching.
PROCESS
1. THE PANEL
The panel is composed of a representative from each of the committees of the Sub commission on Cultural Communities and
Traditional Arts, such as the Office of Muslim Affair(OMA), the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), and other
appropriate institutions.
2. THE NOMINATIONS
The nominations come from the members of the hoc panel experts, the subcommission on cultural communities and traditional arts,
government and private institutions, universities, and other persons knowledgeable.
3. THE SCREENNG
The ad hoc search committees are deployed to various priority areas in the country to conduct searches and document the candidate’s
art or craft.

1. GINAW BILOG
Birth and death: Jan 3,1953-June 3,2003
Category: Artist and Poet
Place of Birth: Panaytayan, Oriental Mindoro
Ginaw Bilog was a promoter of the ambahan which was an oral tradition of poetic verses of the Mangyan.
Ambahan is composed of seven-syllable lines that use metaphors to send a point or message. The ambahan covers a variety of topics
such as giving advices, courtship, farewells, etc.
2. MASINO INTARAY
Birth and death: April 10,1943-Nov 30,2013
Category: Musicial(basal or gong)
Epic chanter (kulilal ang bagit)
Place of Birth: Brooker’s Point, Palawan
He is a storyteller, epic chanter, and a master musician.
3. SAMAON SULAIMAN
Birth and death: March 3,1953-May 21,2011
Category: Musician (kudyapi)
Place of Birth: Mamasapano, Maguindanao
He was acclaimed master and teacher of the kudyapi. Kudyapi is a popular solo instrument of the Maguindanaon, one of the largest
Islamic groups in the Philippines.
The maguindanaon kudyapi is aid to be the one of the most difficult traditional Filipino instrument to master. One string provides the
rhythmic drone while the other string gives the melody depending on the position of the movable frets.
4. LANG DULAY
Birth and death: August 3,1924-April 30,2015
Category: Textile Weaver (t’nalak)
Place of Birth: Lake Sebu, South Cotabato
She is considered a master of the art for her quality craftsmanship because of the “fine even quality of the yarn, the close interweaving
of the warp and weft, the traditional forms and patterns.
T’nalak begins with the stripping of the stem of an abaca plant to get the fibers for the textile. The thread is then dried and tied strand
by hand.
5. SALINTA MONON
Birth and death: Dec 12,1920-June 4,2009
Category: Weaver (abaca ikat or inabel)
Place of Birth: Bansalan, Davao del Sur
He started weaving since she was a 12 years old, under the tutelage of her mother.
6. ALONZO SACLAG
Birth : August 4,1942
Category: Musician, dancer, and preservationist
Place of Birth: Lubugan, Kalinga Province
Saclag was the genius of Kalinga dance and performing arts. He dedicated himself to the promotion and preservation of the kalinga
culture for the benefit of his tribe and others.
Her dreams that someday he would be able to create a showcase Kalinga village where the rich culture and artistry of his people can
be shown.
7. FEDERICO CABALLERO
Birth: Dec 25,1938
Category: Epic Chanter
Place of Birth: Calinog, Iloilo
Federico has dedicated himself in the documentation and preservation of his ethnic community’s oral traditions that include his
people’s epics which without him would have surely been lost.
8. UWANG UHADAS
Birth: Feb 15,1945
Category: Musician (Yakan specifically) kulintang, kwitangan kayu, gabbang, agung and tuntungan)
Place of Birth: Lamitan, Basilan
Ahadas became blind when he was about 5 years old. With the sense of hearing becoming a primary sense, music becamean integral
part of his life.
9. DARHATA SAWABI
Category: weaver (pis syabit)
Pis syabit is a woven traditional headgear of Tausug in jolo. It is traditionally made by the women of the community.
13.MAGDALENA GAMAYO
Category: Master Weaver
She is the one of the stalwarts of abel (blanket) weaving tradition in Ilocos Norte.
PERFORMING ARTIST WHO USE INDIGENOUS TECHNIQUES
LUZON
They represent the country in other international competitions such as the Busan Choral Festival, the 18 th Certamin Juvenil de
Habaneras in Spain wherein they received the audience price award.
Through their music, they have continued to share to the world their talents and beauty of Filipino music.
The company regularly performs abroad to showcase their Philippine folk dance such as in Italy, Malaysia and South Korea.
BKFI serves as the theatre school in Bulacan. In 2007, they created the BACH Institute which stands for the Bulacan Arts, Culture,
and History Institute that endeavoured to develop the rich cultural heritage of te region.
SAMAHANG NAZARENO
It is the group who is most committed in the continuation of the tradition is the Municipality of Cainta (tradition of senakulo)
Formed in 1980, the group has continuously performed the life of Christ. Their preservation of the senakulo has earned them the
Gawad CCP Para sa Sining in 1993.
VISAYAS
JOSE GOMEZ
The Musical Man of Samar.He is considered to be the most productive composer of Samar songs. His professional musical career
started as the member of the band called Cecilian.
During the war, he tragically lost his three sisters and a number of his band members in the hands of the Japanese. He used his passion
for music to entertain the soldiers
AMAL LUMUTOD
He is one of the most best kulintang player in Maguindanao. The music created by playing kulintang is not written down in notes but
is rather played from memory.
MINDANAO
DAGYAW BAILE
It was created in 1990 and has 35 members from Iloilo National High School. They are required first to join classes such as acting,
dancing, and music with ethnic instrumentation.
MEBUYAN BAND
It was composed of 18 female artists based in Mindanao. Mebuyan is derived from the name of a goddess in Manobo and Bogobo
mythology who is supposed to named since the group responds to women’s issues and develops and nurtures artistic talents and
interest in the children and women of the region.
KABPAPAGARIYA ENSEMBLE
It was conceived as a theatre group that was dedicated to promote culture and the arts. KABPAPAGARIYA means the act of making friends.
BAYANG BARRIOS
Bayang Barrios is a Filipina musician who is a member of the ethnic group, the Manobos. She was born in June 12,1968 and is known for her
use of native instruments and styles. She was once part of Joey Ayala’s band Bagong Lumad, where her voice was first noticed and captured
everyone’s attention.
JOEY AYALA
He is one of the most successful composers and musicians that hails from Mindanao. He is one of the few who was able to make a mark in an
industry filled with pop balladeers from Manila.He bring awareness to the ills of society. His songs and lyrics are described as beautiful and
wise.

Organizations are formed when people of common goals band together for a cause or goal, this is true for many art organizations.
ART PATRONAGE
The purchased or commission of an artwork is called art patronage. It can also be used to describe the financial funding given by an
individual or organization to an artist.
Grants are given to performing artists to aid them in developing their craft. Grants can come from both public and private, individuals
and institutions.
3. ORGANIZATIONS-Performing art organizations are formal or informal groupings of artists and/or enthusiast created in order to
support and appreciate their chosen craft.
4. EDUCATION-it is the performing arts in concerned with the transfer of knowledge, the techniques, and styles.
