For items 15-17, refer to the problem below.

Excel Tutorials sampled 50 of its UPCAT passers and asked in what subject they
received their highest grade in high school. The tabulated results are below.

15. What percent of the sample received their highest grade in math?

16. If the sampling procedure was valid and inferences can be drawn from the study,
if an Excel Tutorial student did not receive his or her highest grade in Math,
English and Science, what is the chance that he or she will pass the UPCAT?

17. If the sample represents the actual student population, how many of Excel’s
UPCAT passers received their highest grade in English if the population is
2,000?

For questions 18-20, refer to the problem below.

The cumulative distribution table of 150 Math scores for UPCAT is provided
below. The x axis indicates the upper limit (correct answers as percent of total
items) and the y-axis indicate the number of students. (Example: 3 students
scored 10% or lower.)

students scored
up to 70%?

19.How many students scored above 70 but did not exceed the score of 80?

20.If only the top 10% of Math scorer have a chance of passing the UPCAT, above
what Math score should any student get to have a chance to pass UPCAT?

SECTION 5:
STATISTICS

1. Differentiating the 3 Measures of Central Tendency

There are three measures of central tendency: (1) mean or average (2) median or the
middle value of an ordered set and (3) mode or the most frequently occurring value.

2. Finding the Mean

The mean is simply the average of a set of numbers. It is the most common way of
measuring central tendency. Other measures of central tendency are median and
mode. The formula for mean or average is

EXCEL TUTORIALS www.excelreviews.com

Examples:
Find the mean of 5 numbers 12, 15, 9, 8, 6.

Find the average of 15, 10, 40, 15, 10, 20, 30.

3. Defining the Median

The median is the number in the middle of a set of numbers. List the numbers in
increasing or decreasing order and find the middle value.

Examples:
Find the median of 5, 12, 8, 7 and 6.
5, 6, 7, 8, 12
(median = 7)

Find the median of 9, 12, 13, 12, 10, 10, 11,8.

8, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 12, 13
(Median is between 10 and 11 because we have 8 numbers so we get the
average of 10 and 11. The median is 10.5)

4. Mode

The mode of is the number that appears most frequently in a set of number.
Sometimes, there is more than one mode.

Examples:
Find the mode of the set 6, 5, 7, 10, 12, 12, 7, 6, 7.
The mode is 7, which appears the most times.

Find the mode of the set 4, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9, 10, 4, 11, 13.

The modes are 6, 8, and 4, all of which appeared twice in the set.

5. Finding the Missing Number in a Set

Given the mean, find the missing number by:

x = (no. of terms) × (mean) – (sum of the remaining terms)

Examples:
What is the x in the series {3, 7, 5, 6, 9, x} if the set has a mean of 8?
x= (8x6) – (3+7+5+6+9)
x = 18

Find the 5th term in the set 2, 6, 13, 11 if the average of the set is 15..
x = 5 × 15 – (2 + 6 + 13 + 11) = 75- 22 = 53

6. Finding the Mean of Evenly-Spaced Numbers

Examples:
Find the mean of all even numbers starting from 10 to 54.

=32
Find the average of integers from 6 through 16.

= 11

7. Finding the Sum Given the Average

Sum = Average × Number of Terms

Examples:
A set of 10 numbers has an average of 25, what is the sum of the set?
Sum = 25 × 10
=250

A class has an average score of 65 in a mock UPCAT test. If the class is

composed of 10 boys and 20 girls, what is the sum of their scores?
Sum = 65 × (10+20)
= 65 × 30
= 1950

8. Using the Stem and Leaf Diagram

The stem and leaf diagram is formed by splitting the numbers into two parts. The case
below in tens and units
The tens form the 'stem' and the units form the 'leaves'.

Example:
The following stem and leaf diagram represents the numbers of enrolled
students in myMaths for the last 10 consecutive months.
myMaths: 8, 15, 17, 21, 23, 25, 28, 33 ,45, 52

Key: 1 | 5 means 15
0 8 Key tells you how to
1 5, 7 read the diagram
2 3,5,8
3 3 8 is recorded as 08.
4 5
5 2

9. Analyzing Different Kinds Of Charts

a.) A bar graph is a visual display used to compare the amounts or frequency of
occurrence of a data set.

Example:

Excel! Tutorials wanted to track the increase in grades of its students enrolled in
myMaths UK, a game-based math learning tutorial done using computers. It
gathered the data below.

Grades of my Maths Enrollees, SY 2010-2011

How many points did elementary students’ grades increase from 1 st grading to 4th
grading because of myMaths? 93-82= 11 points

Which group increased the most from 1st grading to 4th grading because of myMaths
UK? Elementary students=93-82=11 > 9= 92-83 = HS students

a.) Pie charts are circular graphs divided into sections, or slices that are used to
present data. These charts compare the data by using fractions or percentages,
with each slice proportional to the fraction or percentage it represents.

Example:
The pie chart shows the percentage of enrolment in Excel Tutorials in different
programs offered.

How many students enrolled in Summer 2-in-1, if the total number of students
are 160? 160 × 10%= 16

If the number of students enrolled in Unli Daily Tutorial is 50, with a percentage
shown in the graph, what is the total number of students enrolled in Excel!
Tutorials?

50 = 25% × n
0.25 = 200

b.) A line graph is most useful in displaying data or information that changes
continuously over time.

Example:
Teacher Flor wanted to analyze the increase in enrolment across months. Below is the
data that she gathered.

What is the percentage increase in enrolment from June to December?

=(13545)/45=200%
How many new enrollees did the center get between June and July? =56-45 =11

10. Working with Summation Notations

Summation notation is a way to represent the sum of multiple terms. It is denoted using
the Greek letter Ʃ (read as sigma).
