This Learning Activity Sheet (LAS) is a project of the Curriculum

Implementation Division particularly the Learning Resource Management and
Development Unit, Department of Education, Schools Division of Mountain Province
which is in response to the implementation of the K to 12 Curriculum.

I. Learning Objectives:
1. To give the abbreviations and equivalents of measurements;
2. Measure ingredients according to recipe requirement; and
3. Convert systems of measurement according to recipe requirement.

II. Background Information

Before the calculation of ingredients’ measurements, you should have
the basic knowledge of the measuring tools that are used in cooking.
In measuring ingredients in cooking, there are units of measurements
used in cooking. They have their own shortened form and equivalent
amounts especially when converted to either U.S. (English) or Metric System
units of measurement.
Metric System is a system of measurement that uses meter, liter and
kilogram/gram as base units of length (distance), capacity (volume) and
weight (mass) respectively. To measure smaller or larger quantities, we used
units derived from the metric units. It is an internationally agreed decimal
system of measurement created in France in 1799 according to Donna
Roberts of mathbitsnotebook.com.

Whereas, U.S or English System is a collection of units of

measurement and rules relating them to each other. It is based on inches,
feet, yards, miles, pounds, ounces etc. It is used in England up to 1826,
which evolved as a combination of the Anglo-Saxon and Roman systems of
units stated in en.m.wikipedia.org.

What do Equivalent, Conversion and Abbreviation mean?

Equivalent means equal or the same in value and amount according

to Oxford languages.com. Knowing the equivalents of basic measurements
either in metric or in U.S. systems make the measuring and cooking
tasks easier. It is important to know the basic measurements in Metric or in
U.S systems since recipes use either of the systems.

Whereas, conversion, according to meriamwebster.com., is a process

of a change of unit of measurement of a value but of the same amount. It is
important to know how to convert liquid measurements because they are
widely used in the commercial kitchen. Converting is a significant skill
especially when adjusting up and down recipes to accommodate certain
numbers of customers or people in a restaurant for example.
On the other hand, abbreviation refers to the shortened
representation of a term or phrase in word. In connection to this, units of
measurements can be abbreviated.

The following sections presents some important measuring

VI. Closure / Reflection
Units of measurements can be converted from Metric to English
System and vice versa depending on the required measurements of
ingredients in a recipe or in a cooking task and the availability of measuring
tools in your kitchen.

Both systems are called the imperial system of measurements and

commonly used systems of today and was adapted most countries as their
standard number system. Although, in the U.S., they use the metric system
for some things but their standard numerical system is the English System.

Familiarizing the equivalents, conversion and abbreviation of units of

measurements is very essential to attain better cooking. Units of
measurements to be used will depend on the available measuring tools in
the kitchen. You might be calculating the possible equivalents or
conversions to attain accurate amounts needed in a recipe.

Thus, being familiar with the measurements either used in dry or in

liquid ingredients helps you to be flexible in measuring ingredients needed
for dish preparations.
