Quarter 2_Module 1

a. Which size of the eggshell and liquid combination resulted in fastest

dissolution times?
 The powdered eggshells with the hot vinegar resulted in fastest
dissolution times.

b. What is the relationship between particle size and time it takes for
the eggshell to dissolve? How does this relationship apply to
weathering in nature?
 The connection between particle size and time it takes for the
eggshell to dissolve is when the greater the particle is the
harder/slower it's liquefy or disintegrated.

c. Using the activity as a model, how mechanical weathering (breaking

or crushing) contributes to chemical weathering (dissolution)? How
can you demonstrate that chemical weathering can hasten
mechanical weathering?
 Mechanical weathering contributes to chemical weathering by
breaking or smashing the stones until it transforms into small pieces
and permitting chemical weathering to accelerate.

d. Compare dissolution time in room temperature water and hot water.

Using this as a model, what can you deduce about the relationship
between temperature and weathering rate?
 The dissolution time in room temperature water is slower than in hot
water, since in hot water it is quicker. Higher temperature expands
the weathering rate since high temperature has high energy that
permits the particles to disintegrate water.

e. Is there marked difference in the dissolution rate in water and

vinegar both at room temperature? What caused the difference?
What does dissolution in vinegar simulate in nature?
 It is an indeed true that there is a marked difference in the
dissolution rate in water and vinegar since vinegar is acidic that
makes the dissolution rate quicker than water.

Quarter 2_Module 1

f. In what environment would weathering rate be faster? Slowest?

Explain your reasons based on the observations from this activity.
 The weathering rate would be quicker in a hot climate since it has a
high kinetic energy that permits particles to break up quicker. In the
interim, the weathering rate could be delayed in a cool climate.
Chemical weathering regularly increments as temperature rises
which means rocks is warm and wet environment experience
quicker paces of chemical weathering compared it rocks in cold and
dry environment.

“What’s More”
Exercise 1_Identification.
Direction: Identify the correct answers from the jumbled words.
1. The process of wearing down rocks. (WEATHERING)
2. The process of moving rocks from one place to another. (EROSION)
3. It constantly erode and shape the shoreline. (WAVES)
4. It is the thin layer of material covering the earth’s surface and is formed
from the weathering of rocks. (SOIL)
5. Ions from a rock are either released into water or recombine with other
substances to form new materials, such as clay mineral. (CHEMICAL WEATHERING)
6. It is a process of breaking down of rocks and erode rock fragments from
higher energy, sites transporting them to locations of lower energy. (EXOGENIC)
7. It is a process in which large flat or curved sheets of rock fracture and are
detached outcrop from the due to pressure release. (EXFOLIATION)
8. It combines with other substances to form entirely new substances. (OXYGEN)

9. It in the air that combines with rain from a water to weak solution . (CARBON DIOXIDE)
10. It is the most active agent of erosion in deserts, open fields, and
beaches. (WIND)

Exercise 2._Mechanical and Chemical Weathering
Direction: From the list below sort the weathering processes into
the correct column depending on whether each is an example of
Mechanical (Physical) Weathering or Chemical Weathering.

Mechanical (Physical) Chemical Weathering

Weathering
 Exfoliation  Oxidation
 Unloading  Hydrolysis
 Freeze-thaw  Acid and Chemicals
 Thermal Expansion from organism
 Salt Crystal Growth  Carbonation
 Solution

“What I Can Do”

Exercise 3._ BARANGAY TINAAN, CITY OF NAGA, CEBU
“What type of weathering is shown in the picture? How does it affect the
lives of the people living in the area?”
The type of weathering in the photograph is a mechanical (physical) weathering
because the fact that the effect of the avalanche can be huge as it causes
obliterations everywhere and may even take our lives.
