THEORY:

1. WHAT IS TRANSLATION?
 Translation is reproducing in the receptor language (target language) the
closest natural equivalent of the source language message, first in terms of
meaning and secondly in terms of style (Nida, 1975).
Dịch thuật là tái tạo lại trong ngôn ngữ tiếp nhận (receptor language) sự
tương đương tự nhiên và sát với thông điê ̣p của ngôn ngữ nguồn nhất
(source language), trước hết là về nghĩa (meaning) và sau đó là phong cách
(style). 

 Translation is rendering the meaning of a text into another language in the

way that the author intended the text (Newmark, 1988).
Dịch thuật là việc chuyển nghĩa của một văn bản sang một ngôn ngữ khác
theo cách tác giả muốn thể hiện khi viết văn bản đó

 Translation is the replacement of textual material in one language (Source

Language) by equivalent textual material in another language (Target
Language) (Catford, 1978).
Dịch thuật là thay thế chất liệu văn bản trong ngôn ngữ gốc bằng chất liệu
văn bản tương đương trong ngôn ngữ nhận

2. WHAT ARE CRITERIA FOR A GOOD TRANSLATION?

I. Massoud's Criteria for a Good Translation (1988)

1. A good translation requires full understanding of the text to be translated

including knowledg of the grammar and vocabulary of the source language.

2. A good translation is easily understood.

3. A good translation is fluent and smooth.

4. A good translation is idiomatic.

5. A good translation distinguishes between the metaphorical and the literal.

 6. A good translation reconstructs the cultural/historical context of the
original.

7. A good translation makes explicit what is implicit in abbreviations, and in

allusions to sayings,

songs, and nursery rhymes.

8. A good translation will convey, as much as possible, the meaning of the

original text.

(pp. 19-24).

II. Nida (1964) stated the following requirements of good translation:

(1) It must make sense.

(2) It must convey the spirit and manner of the original.

(3) It must have a natural and easy form of expression.

(4) It must produce a similar response.

IDEAL TRANSLATION

ACCURATE: Reproducing as exactly as possible the meaning of the source

text.
BEAUTIFUL: Using natural forms of the receptor language (TL) in a way
that is appropriate to the kind of text being translated.
COMMUNICATIVE: Expressing all aspects of the meaning in a way that is
really understandable to the intended audience.

3. COMMON TRANSLATION STRATEGIES IN ENGLISH

VIETNAMESE TRANSLATION
A. Shift/Transposition: this involves a change in the grammar/part of
speech/position from SL to TL.

She graced the meeting with her presence.

o Sự hiện diện của bà ta làm tăng thêm phần long trọng cho cuộc họp
The delegates gave him a warm reception
o Ông ấy đã được tiếp đón thật nồng hậu (Noun→Verb)
Cô ây đọc sách rất chăm chú
o She is an attentive reader (Noun→Verb)
Only 14% of provincial and district hospitals are properly staffed and
equipped for obstetric conditions.
o Chỉ có 14% các bệnh viện tỉnh và huyện có đủ nhân viên và trang
thiết bị cho khoa sản.
The details of the scandals are now common knowledge
o Giờ thì ai cũng biết chi tiết của vụ xì căng đan đó

B. . Modulation/Conversion: It means a variation in the message when it is

translated into a target language due to a change in the point of view.

o Tôi bị mất giọng tới nay đã bốn ngày rồi (Passive<->active)
The roof was damaged by the storm

o Cái bình này cũng có chút giá trị. (Positive <-> double negative)
She cleared her throat before she began to speak
o Cô ấy hắng giọng trước khi nói One part <-> another

The Eiffel Tower is unquestionably one of Paris's most familiar
landmarks.

C. Translation by Addition

Many words that people use daily have origins in other countries and
culture.

She accepts her fate with resignation

chức này có hệ thống riêng về đào tạo, thi cử và đề ra các

the people stil have an opportunity to make a better life.

18. Many poor countries in the world are bound to refuse foreign aids merely
because they want to enjoy true independence.

19. If sex education is introduced into high school curriculum, the young will
approach marriage with understanding and the belief that marriage will last
forever.

20. Now that the moon has become an object of space exploration, it is not
thought of in romantic terms as it used to be. 1. Going to college has always had its
ups and downs, but today the “downs” of the college experience are more
numerous and difficult.
