Republic of The Philippines P.Prieto St. Batangas City

This document contains a case scenario presented to a nursing student for analysis regarding health care ethics. The scenario describes a married woman who has an ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized egg has implanted in her fallopian tube rather than her uterus. If left untreated, the fallopian tube will rupture and likely kill the woman. The only treatment is to remove the tube, which will save the mother but result in the death of the fetus. The student is asked to provide their opinion on whether it is moral for the doctor to operate in this situation.

HEALTH CARE ETHICS

Direction: Please answer the following based on your own opinion and idea. Express your thoughts
in not less than 250 words.

CASE SCENARIO:
A married woman complains of pain, and upon examination, the doctor discovers that an abnormal

pregnancy has occurred. The implantation has taken place in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus

(ectopic gestation). If he does nothing, the tube will swell further and finally rupture, probably killing

the woman. The only cure is to remove the tube promptly, which will save the mother and result in

the death of the fetus. Is it moral for the doctor to operate?

First and foremost, I believe that when it comes to morality, we should be able to distinguish
between right and wrong. In my opinion, the doctor should inform the mother that an operation
would be performed for her own health, but that her fetus may die. How can we argue that it is
moral for a doctor to operate on a pregnant woman without the consent of the fetus's mother and
father? We have two patients in this scenario: the fetus and the mother. It's difficult to know what
the best course of action is to save both of them in this situation. It is possible that the woman and
the fetus will die if the doctor does nothing. When an abnormal pregnancy (ectopic gestation)
occurs, Ectopic pregnancy, also known as extrauterine pregnancy, occurs when a fertilized egg
develops outside of a woman's uterus, in another part of her abdomen. It can result in life-
threatening bleeding and requires immediate medical attention. There is no other option but to
remove the tube in order to rescue the woman. And I believe it is moral for the doctor to make the
best option for the patient's welfare. And, sure, under the principle of double effect, it is moral to
remove the tube. The fetus' death is unintentional and is just tolerated. The reason for removing the
pathologic organ that is threatening the mother's life. The infant may suffer since you can't
guarantee that the child will grow properly or that he or she will not develop a disease as they grow
older, but the woman has a chance to live and continue her life.
