Virgilio Maganes, a sixty-two year old radio journalist who lived in the province
of Pangasinan, was shot six time and diead at the scene on Tuesday morning by two
gunmen on a motorcycle. According to the Philippines police, four years ago,
Maganes survived the previous attempt on his life by pretending to be dead. It is said
that Maganes is the 18th journalist to have been killed since President Rodrigo
Duterte took office in 2016. On that occasion, the gunmen left a note at the scene
saying, “I’m a drug pusher, don’t emulate me.” Such messages were common in
extrajudicial killings during the height of Duterte’s war on drugs that led to thousands
of deaths. Police said they had not established a motive for the attack on Maganes.
At least two other journalists have been killed for doing their work in 2020, according
to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and both cases remain unsolved.
Yes. There is a huge difference on how society treats the criminals compared
to the victims. Support your answer. Obviously, criminals are treated as criminals.
They undergo further and thorough investigations, they are prosecuted, fined,
imprisoned and sometimes even sentenced to death. Victims on the other hand
either receives financial settlement or given what they deserve which is seeing
justice carried out through a guilty verdict against their suspect.
