The paper discusses and compares two types of roof truss systems - the monitor truss and the north light truss in terms of their characteristics and applications.

A monitor truss system has a flat roof with a raised monitor portion along the ridge. It consists of a lattice monitor girder and lattice girder.

A north light truss system is economical for short spans up to 15m. It admits light from the north side to avoid harsh sunlight and has a south slope of 17 degrees.

Abstract
This paper discusses comparative analysis of the monitor truss and north light truss. As
majorly this both truss systems serve the similar purposes which will be discussed in this
paper. The aim of this paper is to find which truss system is better in different aspects.

Introduction
Truss is a structure that consists of members and acts as a single object and is organized into
connected triangles which is generally used in roofs, bridges and towers. In this paper two
types of roof trusses are explained and on the basis of their characteristics they are
distinguished and compared with each other.

Monitor truss
Monitor means the raised portion in a roof which
allows the light or air building. So basically, a
tubular monitor truss system is a type of truss
system in which there is a flat roof with a raised
portion that is the monitor which runs along the
ridge generally in double height structure. In
figure 1 the key sketch of the tubular monitor
truss is given in which the longer side of the truss

Figure 1- Monitor truss

system is the lattice monitor girder and the other one is the lattice girder which is seen in
figure 2 also.

This type of system is generally used for large

construction in many commercial places such as
shopping malls, marriage halls and also in industrial
zones such as factories.

North light truss

This truss system is one of the most
economical systems for short span structure.
When the floor span is more than 15m this
truss system is preferred. This truss system
is also used to admit light and the glazing
part is located in the north direction so it can
avoid the harsh sunlight from other
directions. So the south slope which is 17°
is fully covered and the north side is either
glazed or covered with translucent plastic to
admit daylight which is at an angle from 0°
- 60° to vertical. Figure 3- North light truss
the north light truss system in the given
figure 3 in which the span of north light truss is 11m and lattice girder is 30 m.
This type of truss system is use in industrial area which have large span where manufacturing
activity takes place like warehouse, factories and industries

Figure 4 Plan and sections

Comparison
o Both the system are equally economical
o Bothe the system also admit daylight but monitor truss truss give more uniform level
of daylight as comapared to North light truss.
o North light truss is used for short span whereas monitor truss for large span.

Conclusion
As per the analysis of both the truss system serves similar functions to admit daylight inside
any structure but monitor truss admit more uniform level of daylight as compared to north
light truss according to W. B. Mckay vol 4 and also north light truss is used for short span
and monitor truss for large span. So the monitor truss system is more preferable incase of
large span structure for uniform level of daylight.
