Chapter 3: Psychological Perspective of the Self

Answer the following questions.

1. In what situation did you find a conflict between the Id and Superego becoming real in
your life? How do you resolve between the two?

When I was Senior High School tons of school works are needed to submit before the
deadline then family problem followed. A lot of negative thoughts are running on my mind,
voices in my head continued to tell me to end my life. Everywhere I look there’s a pain and
heartbreak, why would anyone want to stay in this evil world? I’m so desperate to stop those
feelings because I don’t want to feel it anymore. I become selfish that I should have thought on
what others who love me would feel. However, there is a voice in my head saying that it’s not
right to do it and it’s a sin. I end up telling to my trusted friend about what I feel and made a
decision to open up with my family.

2. In Erikson’s theory of self-development, if a child developed mistrust early in life, how

can guardians help change his direction towards integrity instead of despair?

If a child developed mistrust early in life it’s because the care has been inconsistent and
unreliable but a guardian can help to change the direction of a child to integrity in terms of
regaining the trust. Ask for forgiveness in a genuine way because we tend to apologize a lot but
not changing the bad behavior so it become hallow. Understand the child’s side and be patient,
after you regain the trust you should express the love and care that a child needed the most. In
conclusion, a guardian will change the direction of a child to integrity through showing that
adults can be trusted that there’s nothing to be threatened and you are secured. Later in life a
child won’t feel guilt and dissatisfied with life instead he become contented and will see himself
as leading a successful life
3. Explain important factors that may have impact in creating the self.

I think the most important factors are being inspired and passionate in something that you
want to do. It is you and no one should block on what you want to be and what direction you
take. Being inspired and passionate allows you to explore and be pro-active which create
yourself. The power is in our hands, start self-creation and focus less on what everyone around
you is doing.

4. What is the importance of congruent and ideal self?

Being congruent means accepting on who you truly are, you have a sense of worth and
productive life. If you have a great congruence it will enable self-actualization. If what you say
match on what people see in you they will have a sense of trust and will have faith in you. So, if
you are congruent or an authentic individual who’s aware in your own self and do who you are,
people will trust you and will be more comfortable around you which means you will become
more influential. In ideal self a person will become wise and determined to achieve the goal that
they are aiming to be a person that they would like to be. If you have an ideal self then you will
be more motivated to accomplish your desired goal.

5. How does the field of psychology help in the understanding of the self?

Field of Psychology increased a person’s self-understanding and insight. If we learn more

about how development occurs then it allows us as a person to be more aware in ourselves. If
you have knowledge in the field of psychology you will gain a deeper understanding in your own
self but not just yourself but also why others have that kind of behavior and will understand
human action. In short, if you have insight in psychology then you will have a better
understanding in yourself as well as for others.
