Friction Notes: E.Answer The Following Questions. 1 Answer

Here are the diagrams requested: [DIAGRAM 1] A diagram of a wooden block tied to a string that is being pulled by a spring balance. The block sits on a floor surface. [DIAGRAM 2] A diagram showing the same setup as above but with a book placed on top of the wooden block, increasing the normal force between the block and the floor surface. [DIAGRAM 3] A diagram of a ball rolling on a flat surface. Arrows are drawn showing the direction of motion of the ball relative to the surface and the direction of the friction force acting on the ball.

Friction Notes

E.Answer the following questions.

1.Define force of friction. List the factors affecting the force of friction. Explain with examples.

Answer: A friction is a force that opposes any relative motion between the surfaces of two
objects in contact.
The factors affecting the force of friction are :
1. nature of the two surfaces in contact
2. force pressing the two surfaces together .
Example:
(i). Take a wooden block .Tie a string around it .Pull the block by a spring balance as
shown below.

(ii). Note down the reading on the spring balance, when the block just begins to move , it gives
a measure of the force of friction between the surface of the block and the floor .
(iii). Now keep a book on the wooden block. Again pull the block by the spring balance. Note
down the reading. We observe change in the reading of the spring balance and the magnitude
of force will be more.

2. Copy the question from textbook page number 107.

nswer: In case C, the ball is likely to move the longest distance.
A
Reason: Friction is a force that opposes the relative motion between the surfaces of two
objects in contact. And we also know that smooth surfaces offer less friction and the ball is
going to move the longest distance in the case of plane glass sheets.
3. Copy the question from the text to book page number 107.

Answer: Friction is because of irregularities of two surfaces in contact . In sliding friction time
given for the interlocking the irregularities of the two surfaces is very small that is why sliding
friction is very less than static friction.

4. Give reason for the following-

(a) We tend to slip when we step on a banana peel.

Answer: We slip when we step on a banana peel because the inner side of a banana
peel being smooth and slippery reduces the friction between the sole of our shoe and
the surface of the road.

(b) It is easier to push a lighter box than a similar heavy box on the same floor .

Answer: The heavy object will be pressed hard against the opposite surface and
produces more friction. So we have to apply a larger force due to more friction.

(c) The force needed to start a cart, is somewhat greater than the force needed to keep it
moving with a uniform speed.

Answer: The greater force is required to start a cart than the force required to keep the
cart moving in the uniform motion so as to overcome the force of static friction.Once
the cart starts moving then there is the kinetic friction present between the ground and
the wheels of the cart. Static friction is the friction which prevents the object from
moving over the surface while kinetic friction slows down the speed of a moving object.

(d) Sportsmen use shoes fitted with spikes.

Answer: Sportsmen use shoes with spikes to increase the friction between shoes and
the surface. The shoes with spikes do not slip while they run or play.

(e) Ball bearings are used in machines.

Answer: when the machine gets too heated up it may cause fire and the heating up is
due to friction. The ball bearing is used to reduce friction in machines. This is done by
replacing sliding friction with rolling friction.
(f) Tyres of the vehicles need to be changed regularly.

Answer: Tyres of vehicles need to be changed regularly because, with passing time they
get worn off and due to friction they become more smoother.

(g) Machine parts are frequently oil or greased.

Answer: Machine parts are frequently oiled or greased to reduce friction and help in
the smooth running of the machine. Continuous usage of any machine results in friction
in their parts which ultimately leads to wear and tear of the machine parts.

(h) Sports car aeroplanes and boats are designed to have a streamlined shape.

Answer:The object moving in fluids must have a special shape. This type of shape is
called streamlined shape. The streamlined shape helps to overcome the friction
between objects and fluids. The objects have pointed fronts with a little broader middle
portion which gets tapered at the back.

(i) Metal chains are wrapped on tyres when they run on Icy roads.

Answer: The smooth or icy surface reduces friction that is why if we apply brakes the
truck does not stops. For increasing friction and grip, the iron chains are wrapped on
the tyres of trucks in icy areas

(j) Rollers are used for transporting luggage .

Answer: Rollers are used for transporting goods because the magnitude of the rolling
friction is less than any other kind of friction.
5. State and explain, with examples how friction can help the cause of motion in certain
situations.

Answer : The direction of friction is always opposite to the direction of relative motion of two
bodies in contact.
Examples :

1. Walking on the ground: It is friction between the ground and our feet that enables us to
walk. When we walk we push the ground under the feet in the backward direction ,friction then
provide the forward reaction and makes us to move forward.
2.Rolling the ball: The motion of the ball with respect to ground is forward, and friction acts in
backwards direction ,thereby causing rolling .
