Reporting Of Results 08
1.0 SCOPE:
1.1 This procedure describes the method of applying Internal Rotary Inspection System
(IRIS) to test heat exchanger/boiler tubing.
1.2 This procedure is suitable for tube having tube ID 0.49” to 3” and wall thickness 12.5mm
to 75mm.

CLIENT SPECIFICATIONS
2.4
3.1 The personnel who operate the IRIS test equipment with the exception of the probe
positioner / puller technician shall be a minimum Level-II in Ultrasonic Testing Method.

3.3 The evaluation of the result of the IRIS must be conducted by personnel qualified to at
least Level II.
4.1 The operating principle of the system is based upon the ultrasonic pulse echo Immersion
technique.
4.2 Two pulses (inner wall reflection and outer wall reflection) reflected back to the
transducer generate electrical signals which are separated by the time required to make
a round trip through the tube walls.
4.3 Since this time proportional to the wall thickness the thickness can be measured by
measuring the time delay between the inner and outer wall reflection.
The IRIS system model MS 5800 manufactured by M/s R/D Tech Canada or equivalent working
on the IRIS principle.
6.1 All tubes inner surface shall be adequately cleaned to remove any dust, loose
foreign particles, internal deposits or contaminants by a suitable process such as
pressurized water jet cleaning.

7.2 The main requirement of the IRIS is the provision of a clean, relatively high pressure
water supply.
7.3 The IRIS turbine requires a drive pressure of maximum 45 PSI to operate system at the
recommended 1800 RPM.
8.1 The IRIS system shall be calibrated on the standard calibration sample as per Standard
operating procedure.
8.2 Calibration standards shall be manufactured from a tubing of the same material
specification, same heat treatment, and same nominal size.
8.4 The inspection head with centering device should be installed within the tube.
8.6 The operator shall check all water hose and electrical connections are made good, and
that the electronic units are protected from spray.
8.7 The inspection is conducted with the probes and turbine assembly located at the far end
of the tube.

8.8 The assembly is pushed to the end of the tube by feeding the hose through the end
plate of the adaptor.
8.9 To start the inspection the assembly is gradually pulled along the tube towards the
operator.
8.10 The rate at which the inspection head assembly is moved along the tube governs the
degree of coverage of the tube, if flooding is there water supply should be turned off.
8.11 The inspection head assembly can then be withdrawn from the tube.
8.12 The above procedure can be repeated for as many tubes are to be inspected during the
operating session.
8.13 The equipment dismantle procedures are to be inspected during the operating session.
8.14 The equipment dismantle procedures are the reverse of those carried out during the
setup of the inspection.
8.15 The pulling speed of the probe shall be kept constant during the inspection.
8.16 The pulling speed shall be at 40-80mm/s depending on the rotating speed of the turbine.
9.1 For the purposes of this procedure all test results will be recorded on suitable data
acquisition system.
9.2 Each data storage unit shall contain the following information.

9.2.4 Date.
9.3 Each trace shall be identified according to zone / row / tube number as applicable.
10.1 All indications shall be evaluated based on the client’s acceptance criteria.
10.2 All indications shall be evaluated and reported in the form of wall thickness loss.
11.1 The acceptance criteria or rejection of tubes based on wall loss is at the discretion of the
client.
12.1 Report shall be prepared with the information gathered using the computer data files.
12.2 Report all tubes wall with a wall loss reading and all reports issued to the clients shall be
signed by the person performing the inspection and endorsed by the Inspector.
