Chapter 1

1.1 Introduction

PIR Sensor a device used to detect motion by receiving infrared radiation. When a
person walk past the sensor. PIR Sensor allow you to sense motion almost ways used to
detect whether a human has moved in or out of the sensor range. PIR Sensor are basically
made of a pyro electric which you can see below as the round metal can with a
rectangular crystal in the centred which can detect levels of Infrared radiation. The two
halves are wired up so that they cancel each other out. If one half sees less Infrared
radiation than the other, the output will swing high or low.

Security system is a method by which something is secured. By the use of PIR

Sensor the security of our home will not be expose to any kind of danger and Securing
our home is very necessary to avoid unwanted things to happen like robbery and other
crime. It is very important to keep a highly security in our homes because most of our
importance things like money, jewelleries and other important valuable things can be
robbed by burglar without security.

The Faj Dormitory is using CCTV for the security purposes and also for the
monitoring of the return time and getting in and out of the residence in the said dorm.
Reviewing the CCTV it can be inconvenient to the owner and it consume time and at the
same time the owner would not be notice or get alarm immediately if something happen.
The dormitory is also using a low security levels like using padlocks and other door lock
equipment. That’s the main reason we really to keep our security level higher.

The propose system entitled “Human Motion Sensor Alarm System” consist of
different features such as complete with PIR Sensor Detection, Dual element sensor with
Low noise and High Sensitivity, Supply voltage 5V, Delay time adjustable and Standard
TTL Output.
Project Context

The present security system of the Faj Dormitory is used of CCTV and also a low
security level such as padlock and other door lock equipment.

The present system of the said dormitory is using padlock and other door lock equipment
for security purposes and for monitoring the residence of getting in and out. With this
present system of the dormitory it will not immediately notify to the owner if the burglar
got in. And with the low security level used by the said dormitory it can be easily crushed
by the burglar.

The Human Motion Sensor Alarm System is a device to detect a human motion of
unauthorized person in the dormitory during curfew hours. The Human Motion Sensor
Alarm System is protection against burglary or any act of criminals as well as protection
against intruders. Alarm system is a proved that burglars can be decrease by this method.

the system and the one who receive the SMS in case the sensor detect some motion.

The proposed system will give several benefits to the owner of the dormitory by
giving a high security level, the owner can immediately be notify if someone is trying to
get in, it can catch intruders before they can break in. Through this propose system the
owner can really monitor the getting in and out of the tenants especially those who do not
follow the curfew.

The proposed system is that the motion detection is a security device to secure the
dorm from unauthorized personnel and to ensure the safeties of the tenants.
Objective of the Study

The main objective of this project is to develop a Human Motion Sensor Alarm
System using Arduino, to develop a module that will allow securing the dormitory and to
help decrease the robbery problem. To detect a motion of intruders and also to help
maintain the safety of the tenants. And lastly, the objective of the researchers is to
develop system that will notify the owner through SMS.

Scope and Limitations

Scope

This device is to secure the safeness of the tenants, it give alarms if some
intruders wants to enter the area. It can run via Electricity. And also it sends SMS
notification to owner when motion is detected.

Limitation

This device can only detected near area. This device is applicable for
curfew hours of the said dormitory. Only the owner has the authorization to
activate the device. It can only be detect a range of 10 meters or 30 feet. This
device can only detect a human motion.
Chapter II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND SYSTEMS

This chapter examines the current project’s relationship to previous similar

researchers and literature. Support on the conceptual framework of the study relating
between the previous literature and past studies on the motion detection alarm system.
The related literatures on its existing applications will be used as reliable source of the
study. This serves as guide and example to the proponents for the development of the
device. The proponents believe that through the integration of the collected works, the
study will be justifiable.

2.1 Related Literature

2.1.1 Home Automation Security System

According to [CITATION KAt \l 2057 ]et al (2010). Proposes a home automation

Security System called Smart Eye using General Packet Radio Service (GPRS). Smart
Eye also uses a central controller, to which many individual home controllers are
connected. The system proposes a real-time home automation and monitoring system.
The system alerts the homeowner by mobile phone using GPRS, and the user can view
the home using live camera feeds. The system uses a Rabbit Core Module to connect an
electrical appliance in the home to the home system, usually a PC. Each home system is
connected to a central server. Rabbit Core has an IP address, so each device connected to
it can be identified and operated via mobile phones using GPRS. The user sends device
management commands to a central server. The home system reads the command from
the central server, called home polling, and makes the changes needed to a device. When
a device changes state, the home system, usually a PC, sends the change of state of the
device to the central server. The user’s mobile will read the change from the central
server, called mobile polling. The mobile user is provided with a home plan and places
where each piece of equipment is kept in their home. The proposed research gives
importance to communication and network setup rather than security. It mentions
intrusion detection, but no concrete parameters identifying intrusions are mentioned.

2.1.2 SMS-based Home Automation System

According to [ CITATION AAl1 \l 2057 ] (2011). Proposes a home automation system

using SMS. The proposed system detects illegal intrusions at home and allows legitimate
users to change the passkey for the door and control lights in the home. The illegal
intrusion into the home is identified by monitoring the state of the home door, which is
done using Light Emitting Diode (LED) and infrared sensors. The passkey to the door
can be any 4 digits, which can be set either by using the keypad or by using SMS from a
registered user’s mobile number. A user can control the lights in their home remotely
using SMS from their registered mobile number; by turning the lights on in different
rooms at random intervals of time, one can give the impression that the home is occupied,
even when it is not. The work of M.S.H Khiyal et al. Proposes and SMS-based home
security system called SMS-based Wireless Home Appliance Control System (HACS). In
their work, a homeowner can control their home using SMS messages from a present
registered mobile number. If the SMS is not from a legitimate mobile number, the system
ignores the message. In the case of an intrusion, the appliance control subsystem and
security subsystem in the proposed system informs the owner through SMS.

2.1.3 PIR Sensor-Based Applications in Smart Environments

In this study conducted by “[CITATION Han1 \l 2057 ] et al (2015)” PIR sensors are
commonly used with a variety of sensors in diverse applications for building smart
environments, such as healthcare, smart energy system and security. An occupancy and
indoor environment quality sensing method based on a suite of sensors, including PIR
sensors, CO2 sensors, humidity sensors and concentration sensors. Tsai et al. illustrated a
way of reducing the standby power consumption of lighting devices based on a PIR
sensor, an ambient light sensor and lighting duration module. They also demonstrated a
way of reducing the standby power consumption of a personal computer monitor in sleep
status .Erickson et al. implemented a power-efficient occupancy-based energy
management system based on camera-based and PIR sensor-based wireless sensor
networks for opportunistically controlling HVAC system and, thus, increasing energy
efficiency, while maintaining conditioning effectiveness. This capability of PIR sensor-
based occupancy and motion detection for diverse application domains provided the
motivation for this research into the feasibility of a human movement detection system
using various features extracted from the PIR sensor signal.

2.1.4 Indoor Human Tracking with PIR Sensors

According to “[ CITATION Gop \l 2057 ] et al (2018)”. Developed a pyro

electric motion tracking system based on coded apertures, which could detect human
motion in one of the 15 cells in a 1.6-m square area using four PIR detectors. Shankar et
al. developed a human tracking system using a low-cost sensor cluster consisting of PIR
sensors and Fresnel lens arrays to implement the desired spatial segmentations. They
analyzed the response characteristics of the sensor cluster and extracted the velocity and
the direction of motion over large areas of over 12 m. Hao et al. presented a human
tracking system using an MSP430 family microcontroller, an RF transceiver and a radial
sensor module with eight PIR detectors with Fresnel lens arrays arranged around a circle.
They showed that the system can be used to track a single human target by detecting its
angular displacement while moving. Luo et al. demonstrated a 3D simulation study for
human tracking using PIR sensors. Their approach showed the visibility modulation of
each sensor detector and the layout of sensor modules and proposed algorithms for
localizing and tracking people based on the binary output of the PIR sensors.

2.1.5 PIR Module and DAQ System

According to “[ CITATION AsY \l 2057 ], 2016”. Proposed in, two pairs of PIR
sensors whose sensing elements are orthogonally aligned could classify walking
directions into eight categories (i.e., N, NW, W, SW, S, SE, E, NE). For our research, we
also assume that the signals collected from the orthogonally-aligned PIR-based detecting
device are good enough to distinguish between the distances of the human body from the
PIR sensors and the speeds of the moving body. The human movement detecting device
consists of two pairs of PIR sensors, a Logomatic v2 Serial SD data logger from Spark
Fun Electronics, a rechargeable battery and a custom-fabricated data acquisition board, a
rechargeable battery can continuously power four PIR sensors and the data logger during
data collection. We can also power the data collection module with two AA batteries.

2.1.6 Smart Home Automation Security

According to [ CITATION Aru \l 2057 ] (2015) the advancement of technology has

contributed to the changing concept of security in modern homes. It has changed from a
simple lock and key security concept to implementing sophisticated security systems
using cameras, microphones, contact sensors, proximity sensors, alarms, silent alarms,
etc. By connecting modern homes to the Internet which is very popular today, users can
access and control their homes remotely at any time and from anywhere in the world. An
increase in processing power of newly-designed processors and the considerable
reduction in power consumption, cost, and size of new electronics devices enables people
to know and control every aspect of their home, like which door or window is open,
which device or light is switched on, and which rooms are occupied. Inhabitants can keep
an eye on their home using live video and audio feeds from different parts of their home.
They can also be aware of different environmental factors inside and outside their home,
like humidity, temperature, and light intensity. In a Wireless Sensor Actor Network,
sensors gather information about the physical world or environment around them. Actors
perform the appropriate actions on the environment as directed by the user or any other
party. Improvements in Wireless Sensor Actor Networks are certainly a contributing
factor in the popularity of smart homes. Combining Ubiquitous Computing, Wireless
Sensor Actor.

2.1.7 Development of an Anti-Theft Device using Motion Detection and Body

Temperature

According to“[ CITATION Row \l 2057 ] (2014)”, the security is the primary concern
in the world. Knowing your home is protected provides peace of mind when you are far
from it. Security is important even if you are in public places. A project that will make
your house secure rather than just relying on others was one of the goals of this study.
Motion detection on the other hand plays important role for the detection of objects. A
surveillance camera was used to detect motion with the aid of Direct Draw Technology.
The task of motion detector is to detect a region of interest embodied in a region of
awareness, where the region of awareness, or similar with the focus of the camera in the
field of view, is defined as the portion of environment being observed. The region of
interest is in the portion of the environment where activity monitored. Recognition-based
detection is neglected to come up with a simple design. A region of interest can be a
person, an animal, or an object without body temperature that is circumscribed with the
moving objects. A sensor provides the image stream essential for detection and tracking.
The detection of moving objects is done by an appropriate procedure. The possible
procedures are based either on a difference or a statistical method. If it is assumed that
the omnidirectional camera is permanently installed elsewhere, the motion detection can
be done by taking the difference between successive images or the difference between the
current image and a modelled background image. Security, application of technology and
innovating low cost existing anti-theft materials are some of the reason why the
researcher come up with the study. The related literature and studies discussed motion
detection, switching circuits and security that were very useful in this research. This will
also serves as the guide for the development of an anti-theft device utilizing motion
detection and body temperature whose performance is acceptable in terms of
functionality, availability, simplicity, cost and operation.

2.1.8 PIR Sensor Based Security System

According to “[ CITATION Zip17 \l 2057 ] ”, a surveillance, from homes to huge

industries, plays a significant role in the fulfilment of our security. Aspects such as
burglary and theft have always been a predicament. In large industries, personal safety
refers to the monitoring of the people's shifting information like activities and behaviour
to protect, manage, and influence personal details. Surveillance refers to observing over
from a distance by use of electronic equipment like CCTV cameras. However, CCTV
technology is expensive for average residents to install. Additionally, this kind of system
does not notify the user immediately a burglary occurs. This research includes an alarm
system to overcome the shortcomings of the regular surveillance systems.

2.1.9 Design and Implementation of Motion Detection Alarm and Security System

According to “[CITATION Kam \l 2057 ] (2017)”. In the article “Design and

Implementation of Motion Detection Alarm and Security System, the need for security
system have rapidly grown for being for specialized for high-risk area such as banks,
companies, and governmental institutions to be available and demanded rapidly by the
average public. Some of the common characteristics of motion detection alarm and
security system as follow 24 hours monitoring, difficult to hack, Ability to control doors
and motion sensor. The motion sensor used in this work is the pyro electric device that
detects motion by measuring changes in the infrared levels emitted by surrounding
objects. This motion can be detected by checking for a high signal on a single I/O pin. A
typical motion detection alarm and security system should consist of a control panel,
Alarm/siren, Window and door sensor plus at least one motion detector. In addition, some
motion detection alarm and security system can incorporate home automation, smoke
detectors and glass break detector. The main objective of this research work is to design a
system that can sense human movement, buzzes an alarm along with this captures an
image of the intruder which is further compared with the image of owner. In this research
work, will designed a well-organized and intelligent intruder motion detector alarm and
security that can sensed the presence of humanly bodies and notifies this to the owners
just immediately. This system provides a very cost effective security system that can be
placed anywhere in the house with less maintenance cost.

2.1.10 Human Movement Detection with PIR Digital

In this study conducted by “[CITATION Has \l 2057 ] et al. (2018)”. Outputs

More specifically, researchers have been working on detecting movement direction and
counting people entering or leaving the entrance of a room or building using the on-off
output signal of PIR sensors. Hashimoto et al. presented a people counting system
composed of a one-dimension a light-element custom-fabricated array detector, an IR-
transparent lens and an oscillating mechanical chopper. They show a 99% recognition
accuracy of the two-way back-and-forth moving direction and a 95% recognition
accuracy of the number of passers-

By Wahl et al. developed a people counting system for an office space based on self-
sustaining ultra-low power sensor nodes composed of a pair of unit-directional PIR
sensors. They simply differentiate the direction of movement at a gateway by observing
the time difference between inward-facing and outward-facing PIR sensors. They also
proposed an approach to estimate people count per office space using distributed pairs of
PIR sensors and an algorithm to process the distributed sensor information.

2.2 SYNTHESIS
