EXP I. Volumetric Analysis

KMnO4 vs Mohr’s salt solution
Aim: Determine the strength of given KMnO4 solution You are provided with
M/20 Mohr’s salt solution
Ionic equations: MnO4 - + 8H+ + 5e - → Mn2+ + 4H2O
Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e-] x 5
MnO4- +8H+ + 5Fe2+ → 5Fe3+ + Mn2+ + 4H2O

Indicator: KMnO4 is a self-indicator

End point: Colourless to permanent pink colour
Procedure:20 mL of Mohr’s salt solution is pipetted out in a conical flask.20 mL of
dilute sulphuric acid solution is added to it.
Rinse and fill the burette with the given KMnO4 solution.
Note the initial reading of the burette.
Add KMnO4 solution from the burette till the end point.
End point of titration: Colourless to permanent light pink colour
Repeat the experiment to get concordant readings.
OBSERVATIONS and CALCULATIONS

Sl. No Vol of Mohr’s IBR FBR Volume of

salt solution KMnO4
1 20 mL 0 21mL 21mL
2 20 mL 0 21mL 21mL
3 20 ml 0 21mL 21mL

[Final burette readings in exam to be written after performing the experiment.]

Volume of KMnO4 = 21 mL
Volume of Mohrs salt solution = 20 mL
Molarity of Mohrs salt solution = 1/20 M
Molarity of KMnO4 = ?
Molarity of KMnO4 is calculated using the formula
MKmnO4 x VKMnO4 = 2
MFeSO4 x VFeSO4 10
MKMnO4 x 21 = 2
1/20 x 20 10

M KMnO4 = 2 = 0.0095 M
21x 10
Strength of given KMnO4 solution = Molarity x Molar mass = 0.0095 x 158
= 1.501 g/L
