Good day, learners. By the end of this video, you will be able to know and understand
the types of comedy and tragedy. In the long term, you will be able to combine your
creativity and imagination with what you have learned today. The goal of this video is
to introduce to you the types of comedy and tragedy.

Slide 2

Before we proceed, let us first look into the tasks you have accomplished before you
start listening and learning from this video. It is essential that you have done everything
from this checklist before you continue:

 I have enjoyed the activities: both the review and motivational activity.
 I have read Abortion Clinic by Javier Torregrosa.
 I answered the Pre-Reading, Post-Reading and While-Reading questions.

Slide 3

Now that you have verified your accomplishments of the previous tasks, let us continue
with a short introduction of Mr. Javier Torregrosa, the author of Abortion Clinic. Mr.
Torregrosa was born in Spain and lived there for five years before his family moved to
Northern Ireland for thirteen years till, he was eighteen. He grew up in a town called
Larne, Ireland and went to Larne High School.

After reading the literary text, Abortion Clinic, you are now able to understand more of
the text’s subjects. Abortion Clinic talks about date-rape. The drama also shows
abortion as a subject. The text made us see and understand deeper things. It helped us
understand the characters in the text.

Now, before we proceed, let us first know the difference between comedy and tragedy.
In simple terms, the main difference between comedy and tragedy is that the comedy is
a humorous story with a happy ending while a tragedy is a serious story with a sad
ending.

Slide 6

1. Comedy is a literary genre and a type of dramatic work that is amusing and
satirical in its tone, mostly having a cheerful ending. The motif of this dramatic
work is triumph over unpleasant circumstance by creating comic effects,
resulting in a happy or successful conclusion.
2. Tragedy is a type of drama that presents a serious subject matter about human
suffering and corresponding terrible events in a dignified manner.

Types of Comedy

Slide 8

Dark comedy or gallows humor is when you make light of something very serious:
death, disease, war, slavery, addiction, terrorism, etc. Dark comedy is a way of
processing the sadness and despair that may occur in the face of these things.

Here are a few examples of Dark Comedy or Gallows Humor.

Slide 9

Situational comedy gets its humor from awkward, amusing situations. Called “sitcoms”
for short, situational comedies are usually TV shows in which a small set of characters
gets into a different situation in each episode.

Here are a few examples of Situational Comedy or Sitcoms.

Slide 10

Romantic comedy deals with a romantic relationship, almost always between a young
woman and a young man. The comedy derives from their clumsy efforts to get together
– usually they like each other, but each is unsure that the other likes them back, and
their behaviour is nervous and awkward, resulting in situational comedy. Romantic
comedies are often considered dramedies.

Here are a few examples of Romantic Comedy or RomComs.

Slide 12

Physical comedy or slapstick might be the oldest type of comedy around – it’s pies in
the face, banana peels, farts, and other physical gags. Though this is sometimes
considered less sophisticated than other forms of comedy, it’s very effective.

Here are a few examples of Physical Comedy or Slapstick.

Slide 13

Farce is a comedy so silly and over-the-top that it just doesn’t make any sense and you
have to laugh. Farces usually use an extremely exaggerated combination of physical
comedy and situational comedy, and are usually thick with plot twists, hidden identities,
and confusing surprises.

Here are a few examples of Farce.

Slide 14

Topical humor deals with current events, especially politics.

Here are a few examples of Topical Humor.

Slide 16

Spoof or Parody is a comedy that imitates the rules and clichés of another movie or
genre. For example, the film Scary Movie makes fun of horror films through
exaggeration and confusion.

Here are a few examples of Spoof or Parody.

Slide 17

Types of Tragedy.

Slide 18

1. Greek Tragedy - Typically consists of a protagonist of high rank who makes an

error of judgement and accepts his fall from grace.
2. Elizabethan Tragedy - usually centers on a character with great personality who
is destroyed by his own passion and ambition.
3. Revenge Tragedy - Dramatic works in which one character seeks revenge upon
another character for an evil doing.

Slide 19

1. Oedipus Rex by Sophocles is one example of Greek Tragedy.

2. The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd is an example Elizabethan Tragedy.
3. Hamlet by William Shakespeare is a good example of Revenge Tragedy.

Before I end this video, let us all reflect and comprehend the following Bible verse in
context to that of our literary text entitled Abortion written by Javier Torregrosa and
conscience, one of Ateneo 6Cs:

Acts 24: 16 – And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of
offence toward God and toward men.
After ending this video, ask yourself in silence:

1. Do I make the effort to respect and promote life in all its stages and aspects?
2. Do I do everything in my power to promote the good of the other and life in
general?

Thank you very much for listening.
