Title: Laboratory Activity: Viscosity of a Liquid

Objective:  To compare the viscosity of the three liquids

To determine the viscosity of sample liquids

Materials:  clean, egg shape - dry marble, a 100 ml beaker, timer, water, cooking oil and (glucose)
syrup.

Procedures:
A.
1. Fill the beaker with water up to 60 ml.
2. Drop the marble into the water. Use a timer to record the time it takes for the marble to
reach the bottom.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to make (3) three trials. Record the marble’s travel time in each trial.
4. Remove the marble and the water from the beaker and dry both of them.
5. Repeat step 3 and use oil.
6. Repeat step 4.
7. Repeat step 3 and syrup.
8. Wash and dry the beaker and the marble.
9. Calculate the average time it took the marble to move from the top to the bottom of the
liquids.

B. Complete the following table, determine and calculate the viscosity of each liquids using the
equation:
D

Conversion:
Unit of density is g/cm3
density of water is 1g/cm3
density of oil is 0.93 g/cm3
density of syrup is 1.56 g/cm3

Questions:
1. In which liquid did the egg marble take the longest time to reach the bottom? Syrup

2. How would you rank the liquids in the order of decreasing viscosity?
Syrup, Cooking Oil, Water

3. What explanation can you give for the observed viscosities? The higher the density,
the slower the viscosity is and vice versa.
