ACTIVITY 1.1
WHAT WAS THEN CONSIDERED THE EARLIEST KNOWN HUMAN REMAINS
IN THE PHILIPPINES – TABON MAN.

GUIDE QUESTION:
1. Which is the primary source and the secondary source between the two readings?

The primary source of the two readings would be the one written by Robert
b. fox. During his excavation the scattered fossil bones were excavated. He found
out that there are some large fragments have been seen along the cave. He has
more credible sources to provide a statement that the first human remains in the
Philippines was the tabon man. Robert b. fox an American anthropologist of the
national museum in the Philippines found out by himself on May 28, 1962.

The secondary source is the work of William henry Scott. Based on my

understanding about his article it seems to be a commentary article for his journal
about the tabon man. He has different facts of interpretations about the tabon man,
he added some details and scenarios blending in today. It was written that tabon
man dressed decently just like the people nowadays.

2. Do a credibility analysis of the two sources. Who between the two authors is more
credible to talk about the topic.?

These two articles and the authors of this reading about tabon man was
incredibly amazing to publish in public this information of the first earliest known
human found in the Philippines. The tabon man was the remains that were found
and discovered in the tabon cave in Palawan Island in the Philippines. There are
two authors who did research regarding about the first finding of tabon man. The
authors have said in their articles that they have resources of this information and
found some materials to study. But for me, the more credible source that was
published about the tabon man was written by Robert b. fox. The author’s
background clearly states that based on their profession Robert B. Fox now is
more than credible than William Henry Scott. The mention of dates in both
excerpts can also determine who is more credible between the two authors. In the
excerpt of Fox, he states the duration of the initial excavations of Tabon cave on
June and July of 1962 which means that he, himself conducted the excavation at
that time while Scott approached to the dates where it was discovered were more
leaning on to the current information that Fox says in his excerpt and nowhere it
said the Scott did mention about the excavation. These two alone affects the
reliability of the accounts on who comes first than the other one. Another notably
difference between the two authors were the way they sequence the events of the
finding of the Tabon man. Robert B. Fox explains the sequence of the event
specifically as if it was directly observed making placing him as the reliable source
on the Tabon man discovery. Between the two account the other one doesn’t make
the other one less valid or reliable but in the context of finding who discovered the
Tabon man, it was clearly Robert B. Fox who discovered it in the Tabon Cave in
Palawan. Their profession also plays a big role in whose stating it based on
experience or work.
