Research and Innovation Week: resilience and excellence in education

amidst the pandemic

Physical connections between teachers and students have been completely excluded from
the educational system. And the Covid-19 pandemic is to blame. Many of us were unprepared,
particularly when face-to-face classes were restricted across the country due to lockdowns. The
suddenness, confusion, and volatility of the covid-19 pandemic forced the educational system to
face the need for a change in learning management system, and they chose to do so through online,
modular, and blended learning.

One of the speakers talked about the innovations in teaching and assessment of education in
legal basis that include the Article 14 Section 10 of the 1987 Philippines Constitution which states
that they shall give priority to the research and development, invention and innovation, science and
technology education. Also, we had a glimpse on the current status and situation of our educational
system, 1.1 million students did not enroll for the school year 2020-2021, while 1,179 private
schools closed last year. Parents also tried to cope with the switch to online classes, which then led
to spending more for education. The impact of the coronavirus pandemic on education has really
exacerbated these problems.

Although we may not have the quality of education compared to the face-to-face situation,
this should not prevent the educators and students to be better in this globally demanding
environment and they should be able to establish and maintain outside of the comforts of their
rooms the eagerness to learn. Educators are needed to explore innovative techniques and ways of
doing things so that we are not stuck when it comes to learning. We have fallen behind in
implementing this online learning as compared to other countries. However, as a result of the
perseverance and commitment, educators are increasingly standing up and conducting research on
teaching methods to ensure that learning stays accessible to learners and students. Because certain
learners, particularly those in rural places, are unable to participate in online learning due to a lack
of Internet connectivity, some of us must develop unique thinking methodologies. That is why our
future educators from being facilitators in the classroom of learning are also innovators. This
pandemic has caused a range of mental, emotional, economic, and societal challenges around the
world. There is indeed a need of innovation and research to address the problems we are facing
today.
