ACTIVITY SHEET
Freedom of the Human Person

I. Learning Competencies
1. Evaluate and exercise prudence in choices;
2. Realize that: a. Choices have consequences; b. Some things are given up
while others are obtained in making choices; and
3. Show situations that demonstrate freedom of choice and the
consequences of their choices.

II. Background Information for Learners

According to Aldea & Allen (2016) freedom is the most sublime of all human
preoccupations. It is the highest good that all persons struggle to protect.

The claim above remains to be an intellectual task to understand the meaning

of the word “freedom”. From this endeavor, we may begin to question: What by
the way is freedom? What does it really mean to be free?

Freedom has two essential elements which are voluntariness and

responsibility. Voluntariness is defined as the ability of the person to act out of
his/her own free will and self-determination. Responsibility is defined as the
person being accountable for his/her actions and their consequences.

Remember

Freedom is a gift that should not be squandered but taken as a wonderful

gift that must nurtured and protected without impinging that rights or freedom of
others. Therefore, it is not enough that the human being is free but that one is
conscious of one’s responsibility for the consequences of one’s choices.
(Ramos, 2016)
A famous quote by Rabindranath Tagore runs, “Let me not crave in
conscious fear to be saved, but hope for patience to win my freedom”.
Shadows and slavery could symbolize the opposite of freedom or emancipation.
Freedom is earned and protected. One could not just easily take freedom for
granted. More than just attaining economic freedom, freedom is also spiritual.
As human beings, we should not be enslaved by our selfishness but to be truly
free, we should also be at one with others and the environment. (Ibid.)
